In short: The Ketu mahadasha lasts seven years. It is often an inward, transitional period: endings that clear space, interest in spiritual or subtle subjects, travel, and changes that seem sudden at the time and sensible later.

At a glance

Length 7 years
Comes after Mercury mahadasha
Comes before Venus mahadasha
Born into it those with the Moon in Ashwini, Magha or Mula
First antardasha Ketu–Ketu (4 months 27 days)

What the Ketu period tends to bring

Ketu separates and liberates. Its period commonly brings detachment from things that once mattered, a turn toward spirituality, research or healing, unexpected events, and sometimes isolation or confusion about direction. Because Ketu has no sign of its own, the period's character comes largely from Ketu's dispositor, its nakshatra lord and the planets with it.

When Ketu is strong, and when it is strained

Ketu works best when its dispositor is strong, when it sits in the 3rd, 6th, 11th or 12th (classically good houses for it), or with benefics. It is more strained with the luminaries (an eclipse combination), in the 2nd, 7th or 8th when afflicted, or with a weak dispositor.

The nine antardashas

Each mahadasha is divided into nine sub-periods (antardashas or bhuktis), beginning with the mahadasha lord itself and following the Vimshottari order. Each antardasha lasts (mahadasha years × antardasha years) ÷ 120 years.

Antardasha Length (360-day years) Years
Ketu 4 months 27 days 0.41
Venus 1 year 2 months 1.17
Sun 4 months 6 days 0.35
Moon 7 months 0.58
Mars 4 months 27 days 0.41
Rahu 1 year 18 days 1.05
Jupiter 11 months 6 days 0.93
Saturn 1 year 1 month 9 days 1.11
Mercury 11 months 27 days 0.99

How the chart changes it

A dasha brings forward whatever its planet promises in the individual chart. The main factors, in classical order of importance:

  • The houses Ketu rules for the ascendant — its period delivers those houses' matters. (See our ascendant pages for Ketu's lordship in each.)
  • The house Ketu occupies — where in life the period is felt.
  • Dignity — exalted, own sign, friendly, enemy or debilitated (with cancellation checked).
  • Aspects and conjunctions — Jupiter's aspect protects; malefic association adds strain.
  • The nakshatra lord of Ketu — part of the results come through it.
  • Navamsa and other divisional charts — D9 for overall strength, D10 for career.
  • Transits — the period's events often coincide with Jupiter and Saturn transits over key points.

Relationships, work and wellbeing

Relationships: detachment or unusual bonds; space and honesty help.

Work: research, technical, healing or spiritual work often comes forward; career changes are common.

Wellbeing: grounding routines matter; unusual symptoms deserve medical attention. Not medical advice.

Traditional practices for the Ketu period

Traditional practice for the Ketu period includes worship of Ganesha, meditation, charity of multi-coloured blankets, and feeding dogs (a Lal Kitab custom). These are devotional practices, not guarantees.
