Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 3
Bhagavad Gita Chapter 3 (Karma Yoga) in Hindi and English with meaning
Krishna has just praised the steady mind, and Arjuna asks: if understanding is higher than action, why must I fight? This chapter answers that no one can stop acting, so act well: as an offering, without attachment, for the good of the world.
Listen: Bhagavad Gita Chapter 3: Karma Yoga
A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.
What happens in chapter 3
In chapter 2 Krishna spoke of the self that never dies and of the calm, steady mind, and he also told Arjuna to act without clinging to results. Arjuna hears a contradiction: if understanding is better than action, why push him into a terrible battle (3.1)? Chapter 3 is Krishna's answer, and it gives the Gita's path of action, karma yoga, its foundation.
No one can stay without acting even for a moment (3.5), so the real question is how to act. Krishna's answer is yajna: work done as an offering, not only for oneself. Life is a wheel of giving and receiving, from food and rain to offering and action (3.14), and one who only takes from it is called a thief (3.12). The wise keep working even when they need nothing, for the good of the world, loka-sangraha (3.20), because others follow what the best people do (3.21). Krishna says that he himself works for this reason (3.22).
Then come two of the Gita's most quoted lines: offer all your actions to me and fight, free of the mind's fever (3.30); and better your own duty done imperfectly than another's done well (3.35). The chapter ends with Arjuna's very human question, what makes us do wrong against our will (3.36)? Krishna names desire and anger (3.37), says desire covers understanding as smoke covers fire (3.38), and shows how to master it by knowing what lies beyond the senses, mind and intellect (3.42–3.43).
Reading the chapter with the meanings takes about 20 to 25 minutes.
Verses 3.1–3.8: why act at all?
Arjuna asks why he must act if knowledge is higher; Krishna answers that no one can live without acting.
Verse 3.1
अर्जुन उवाच
ज्यायसी चेत्कर्मणस्ते मता बुद्धिर्जनार्दन।
तत्किं कर्मणि घोरे मां नियोजयसि केशव॥
Arjuna uvacha

tat kim karmani ghore mam niyojayasi keshava.
अर्थ: अर्जुन ने कहा: हे जनार्दन, अगर आप कर्म से ज्ञान (बुद्धि) को श्रेष्ठ मानते हैं, तो हे केशव, मुझे इस भयंकर कर्म (युद्ध) में क्यों लगा रहे हैं?
Meaning: Arjuna said: Janardana, if you hold that understanding is better than action, then why, Keshava, do you push me into this terrible deed?
Verse 3.2
व्यामिश्रेणेव वाक्येन बुद्धिं मोहयसीव मे।
तदेकं वद निश्चित्य येन श्रेयोऽहमाप्नुयाम्॥
Vyamishreneva vakyena buddhim mohayasiva me,
tad ekam vada nishchitya yena shreyo 'ham apnuyam.
अर्थ: आपकी मिली-जुली-सी बातों से मेरी बुद्धि उलझ रही है। इसलिए निश्चय करके मुझे एक ही बात बताइए, जिससे मेरा कल्याण हो।

ज्ञानयोगेन सांख्यानां कर्मयोगेन योगिनाम्॥
Shri bhagavan uvacha
loke 'smin dvi-vidha nishtha pura prokta mayanagha,
jnana-yogena sankhyanam karma-yogena yoginam.
अर्थ: श्रीभगवान ने कहा: हे निष्पाप अर्जुन, इस संसार में मैंने पहले ही दो तरह की निष्ठा (मार्ग) बताई है: ज्ञानियों के लिए ज्ञानयोग, और कर्म करने वालों के लिए कर्मयोग।
Meaning: The Lord said: Sinless one, as I said before, there are two paths in this world: the path of knowledge for those given to contemplation, and the path of action for those given to work.
Verse 3.4
न कर्मणामनारम्भान्नैष्कर्म्यं पुरुषोऽश्नुते।
न च संन्यसनादेव सिद्धिं समधिगच्छति॥
Na karmanam anarambhan naishkarmyam purusho 'shnute,
na cha sannyasanad eva siddhim samadhigachchhati.
अर्थ: केवल कर्म शुरू न करने से कोई कर्म के बंधन से मुक्त (नैष्कर्म्य) नहीं होता, और केवल कर्म छोड़ देने से सिद्धि नहीं मिलती।
Meaning: No one becomes free of action merely by not starting any work, and no one reaches perfection merely by giving work up.
Verse 3.5
न हि कश्चित्क्षणमपि जातु तिष्ठत्यकर्मकृत्।
कार्यते ह्यवशः कर्म सर्वः प्रकृतिजैर्गुणैः॥
Na hi kashchit kshanam api jatu tishthaty akarma-krit,
karyate hy avashah karma sarvah prakriti-jair gunaih.
अर्थ: कोई भी एक पल के लिए भी बिना कर्म किए नहीं रह सकता। प्रकृति से पैदा हुए गुण हर किसी से, उसके न चाहते हुए भी, कर्म करवाते हैं।
Meaning: No one can stay without acting even for a moment. Everyone is made to act, whether they wish it or not, by the qualities (gunas) born of nature.
Verse 3.6
कर्मेन्द्रियाणि संयम्य य आस्ते मनसा स्मरन्।
इन्द्रियार्थान्विमूढात्मा मिथ्याचारः स उच्यते॥
Karmendriyani samyamya ya aste manasa smaran,
indriyarthan vimudhatma mithyacharah sa uchyate.

Verse 3.7
यस्त्विन्द्रियाणि मनसा नियम्यारभतेऽर्जुन।
कर्मेन्द्रियैः कर्मयोगमसक्तः स विशिष्यते॥
Yas tv indriyani manasa niyamyarabhate 'rjuna,
karmendriyaih karma-yogam asaktah sa vishishyate.
अर्थ: पर हे अर्जुन, जो मन से इंद्रियों को वश में करके, बिना आसक्ति के, कर्म-इंद्रियों से कर्मयोग करता है, वह श्रेष्ठ है।
Meaning: But one who controls the senses with the mind, Arjuna, and without attachment takes up the path of action with the organs of action, is far better.
Verse 3.8
नियतं कुरु कर्म त्वं कर्म ज्यायो ह्यकर्मणः।
शरीरयात्रापि च ते न प्रसिद्ध्येदकर्मणः॥
Niyatam kuru karma tvam karma jyayo hy akarmanah,
sharira-yatrapi cha te na prasiddhyed akarmanah.
अर्थ: तुम अपना नियत (तय) कर्म करो; कर्म न करने से कर्म करना श्रेष्ठ है। बिना कर्म के तो तुम्हारे शरीर का निर्वाह भी नहीं हो सकता।
Meaning: Do the work that is yours to do; action is better than inaction. Without action you could not even keep your body going.
Verses 3.9–3.16: work as an offering
Yajna, work offered for others, keeps the wheel of life turning: food, rain, offering and action.
Verse 3.9
यज्ञार्थात्कर्मणोऽन्यत्र लोकोऽयं कर्मबन्धनः।
तदर्थं कर्म कौन्तेय मुक्तसङ्गः समाचर॥
Yajnarthat karmano 'nyatra loko 'yam karma-bandhanah,
tad-artham karma kaunteya mukta-sangah samachara.
अर्थ: यज्ञ (भेंट और सेवा) के लिए किए गए कर्म के सिवा बाकी कर्मों से यह संसार बंधता है। इसलिए हे कुंतीपुत्र, आसक्ति छोड़कर यज्ञ-भाव से कर्म करो।
Meaning: Apart from work done as yajna, as an offering, work binds people in this world. So, son of Kunti, do your work as an offering, free of attachment.
Verse 3.10
सहयज्ञाः प्रजाः सृष्ट्वा पुरोवाच प्रजापतिः।
अनेन प्रसविष्यध्वमेष वोऽस्त्विष्टकामधुक्॥
Saha-yajnah prajah srishtva purovacha prajapatih,
anena prasavishyadhvam esha vo 'stv ishta-kama-dhuk.
अर्थ: सृष्टि के आरंभ में प्रजापति ने यज्ञ के साथ प्रजा को रचकर कहा: “इस यज्ञ से तुम बढ़ो; यह तुम्हारी मनचाही चीज़ें देने वाली कामधेनु बने।”
Meaning: In the beginning the Creator (Prajapati) made beings together with yajna and said: “By this may you grow; may it be the wish-fulfilling cow that gives you what you need.”
Verse 3.11
देवान्भावयतानेन ते देवा भावयन्तु वः।
परस्परं भावयन्तः श्रेयः परमवाप्स्यथ॥
Devan bhavayatanena te deva bhavayantu vah,
parasparam bhavayantah shreyah param avapsyatha.

Meaning: “With it, nourish the gods, and may the gods nourish you. Caring for one another, you will reach the highest good.”
Verse 3.12
इष्टान्भोगान्हि वो देवा दास्यन्ते यज्ञभाविताः।
तैर्दत्तानप्रदायैभ्यो यो भुङ्क्ते स्तेन एव सः॥
Ishtan bhogan hi vo deva dasyante yajna-bhavitah,
tair dattan apradayaibhyo yo bhunkte stena eva sah.
अर्थ: “यज्ञ से प्रसन्न देवता तुम्हें मनचाहे भोग देंगे।” जो उनके दिए हुए को उन्हें अर्पित किए बिना अकेले भोगता है, वह चोर ही है।
Meaning: “Pleased by yajna, the gods will give you the enjoyments you desire.” Whoever enjoys their gifts without offering anything back is simply a thief.
Verse 3.13
यज्ञशिष्टाशिनः सन्तो मुच्यन्ते सर्वकिल्बिषैः।
भुञ्जते ते त्वघं पापा ये पचन्त्यात्मकारणात्॥
Yajna-shishtashinah santo muchyante sarva-kilbishaih,
bhunjate te tv agham papa ye pachanty atma-karanat.

Verse 3.14
अन्नाद्भवन्ति भूतानि पर्जन्यादन्नसम्भवः।

Verse 3.15
कर्म ब्रह्मोद्भवं विद्धि ब्रह्माक्षरसमुद्भवम्।
तस्मात्सर्वगतं ब्रह्म नित्यं यज्ञे प्रतिष्ठितम्॥
Karma brahmodbhavam viddhi brahmakshara-samudbhavam,
tasmat sarva-gatam brahma nityam yajne pratishthitam.
अर्थ: जानो कि कर्म ब्रह्म (वेद) से उत्पन्न होता है, और वेद अविनाशी परमात्मा से। इसलिए सर्वव्यापी ब्रह्म सदा यज्ञ में स्थित है। (यहाँ “ब्रह्म” को अधिकांश टीकाकार वेद मानते हैं, कुछ प्रकृति।)
Meaning: Know that action comes from Brahman, the Veda, and the Veda from the Imperishable. So the all-pervading Brahman is always present in yajna. (Most commentators take brahman here as the Veda; some take it as nature.)
Verse 3.16
एवं प्रवर्तितं चक्रं नानुवर्तयतीह यः।
अघायुरिन्द्रियारामो मोघं पार्थ स जीवति॥
Evam pravartitam chakram nanuvartayatiha yah,
aghayur indriyaramo mogham partha sa jivati.
अर्थ: हे पार्थ, इस तरह चलाए गए इस चक्र के अनुसार जो यहाँ नहीं चलता, वह इंद्रियों के सुख में डूबा पापमय जीवन जीता है; उसका जीना व्यर्थ है।
Meaning: Partha, one who does not keep turning the wheel set in motion this way lives a life of wrong, delighting only in the senses; such a person lives in vain.
Verses 3.17–3.29: acting for the good of the world
Even the wise, and Krishna himself, keep working, to set an example and hold the world together.
Verse 3.17
Meaning: But for one who delights only in the self, who is fulfilled in the self and content in the self alone, there is nothing left that must be done.
Verse 3.18
नैव तस्य कृतेनार्थो नाकृतेनेह कश्चन।
न चास्य सर्वभूतेषु कश्चिदर्थव्यपाश्रयः॥
Naiva tasya kritenartho nakriteneha kashchana,
na chasya sarva-bhuteshu kashchid artha-vyapashrayah.
अर्थ: ऐसे व्यक्ति को इस संसार में न कर्म करने से कुछ पाना है, न कर्म न करने से कुछ खोना है; और उसे किसी भी प्राणी पर किसी स्वार्थ के लिए निर्भर नहीं रहना।
Meaning: Such a person has nothing to gain here by acting and nothing to lose by not acting, and depends on no being for anything.
Verse 3.19
तस्मादसक्तः सततं कार्यं कर्म समाचर।
असक्तो ह्याचरन्कर्म परमाप्नोति पूरुषः॥
Tasmad asaktah satatam karyam karma samachara,
asakto hy acharan karma param apnoti purushah.
अर्थ: इसलिए आसक्ति के बिना, सदा अपना कर्तव्य-कर्म अच्छी तरह करते रहो; क्योंकि आसक्ति के बिना कर्म करने वाला मनुष्य परम (सर्वोच्च) को पा लेता है।
Meaning: So always do the work that has to be done, without attachment; for by working without attachment a person reaches the highest.
Verse 3.20
कर्मणैव हि संसिद्धिमास्थिता जनकादयः।
लोकसंग्रहमेवापि संपश्यन्कर्तुमर्हसि॥
Karmanaiva hi samsiddhim asthita janakadayah,
loka-sangraham evapi sampashyan kartum arhasi.
अर्थ: राजा जनक जैसे लोगों ने कर्म से ही परम सिद्धि पाई। लोकसंग्रह (संसार की भलाई और उसे सही राह पर रखने) को देखते हुए भी तुम्हें कर्म करना चाहिए।
Meaning: King Janaka and others reached perfection through action itself. And with the welfare of the world (loka-sangraha) in view, you too should act.
Verse 3.21
यद्यदाचरति श्रेष्ठस्तत्तदेवेतरो जनः।
स यत्प्रमाणं कुरुते लोकस्तदनुवर्तते॥
Yad yad acharati shreshthas tat tad evetaro janah,
sa yat pramanam kurute lokas tad anuvartate.
अर्थ: श्रेष्ठ व्यक्ति जैसा आचरण करता है, दूसरे लोग भी वैसा ही करते हैं। वह जो मानक बनाता है, दुनिया उसी पर चलती है।

Verse 3.22
न मे पार्थास्ति कर्तव्यं त्रिषु लोकेषु किंचन।
नानवाप्तमवाप्तव्यं वर्त एव च कर्मणि॥

nanavaptam avaptavyam varta eva cha karmani.
अर्थ: हे पार्थ, तीनों लोकों में मेरे लिए कोई कर्तव्य नहीं, और न कुछ ऐसा है जो मुझे न मिला हो या जिसे पाना हो; फिर भी मैं कर्म में लगा रहता हूँ।
Meaning: Partha, there is nothing in the three worlds that I must do, nothing I lack and nothing I have yet to gain; and still I go on acting.
Verse 3.23
यदि ह्यहं न वर्तेयं जातु कर्मण्यतन्द्रितः।
मम वर्त्मानुवर्तन्ते मनुष्याः पार्थ सर्वशः॥
Yadi hy aham na varteyam jatu karmany atandritah,
mama vartmanuvartante manushyah partha sarvashah.
अर्थ: क्योंकि अगर मैं कभी सावधान होकर कर्म न करूँ, तो हे पार्थ, लोग हर तरह से मेरे ही रास्ते पर चलेंगे।
Meaning: For if I ever stopped working tirelessly, Partha, people everywhere would follow my path.
Verse 3.24
उत्सीदेयुरिमे लोका न कुर्यां कर्म चेदहम्।
संकरस्य च कर्ता स्यामुपहन्यामिमाः प्रजाः॥
Utsideyur ime loka na kuryam karma ched aham,
sankarasya cha karta syam upahanyam imah prajah.

सक्ताः कर्मण्यविद्वांसो यथा कुर्वन्ति भारत।
कुर्याद्विद्वांस्तथासक्तश्चिकीर्षुर्लोकसंग्रहम्॥
Saktah karmany avidvamso yatha kurvanti bharata,
kuryad vidvams tathasaktash chikirshur loka-sangraham.

न बुद्धिभेदं जनयेदज्ञानां कर्मसङ्गिनाम्।
जोषयेत्सर्वकर्माणि विद्वान्युक्तः समाचरन्॥
Na buddhi-bhedam janayed ajnanam karma-sanginam,
joshayet sarva-karmani vidvan yuktah samacharan.
अर्थ: ज्ञानी को चाहिए कि कर्म में आसक्त अज्ञानी लोगों की बुद्धि में भ्रम पैदा न करे; बल्कि स्वयं सब कर्म अच्छी तरह करते हुए उन्हें भी कर्म में लगाए रखे।
Meaning: The wise should not unsettle the minds of the unknowing who are attached to their work; doing all their own work with discipline, they should encourage others to do theirs.
Verse 3.27
प्रकृतेः क्रियमाणानि गुणैः कर्माणि सर्वशः।
अहंकारविमूढात्मा कर्ताहमिति मन्यते॥
Prakriteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvashah,
ahankara-vimudhatma kartaham iti manyate.

Tattva-vit tu maha-baho guna-karma-vibhagayoh,
guna guneshu vartanta iti matva na sajjate.

Meaning: But one who knows the truth about the gunas and their actions, mighty-armed one, sees that it is the gunas acting on the gunas, and does not get attached.
Verse 3.29
प्रकृतेर्गुणसंमूढाः सज्जन्ते गुणकर्मसु।
तानकृत्स्नविदो मन्दान्कृत्स्नविन्न विचालयेत्॥
Prakriter guna-sammudhah sajjante guna-karmasu,
tan akritsna-vido mandan kritsna-vin na vichalayet.

श्रद्धावन्तोऽनसूयन्तो मुच्यन्ते तेऽपि कर्मभिः॥

shraddhavanto 'nasuyanto muchyante te 'pi karmabhih.
अर्थ: जो लोग श्रद्धा के साथ, बिना दोष निकाले, मेरे इस मत का सदा पालन करते हैं, वे भी कर्मों के बंधन से छूट जाते हैं।
Meaning: Those who always follow this teaching of mine with faith and without finding fault are also freed from the bondage of action.
Verse 3.32
ये त्वेतदभ्यसूयन्तो नानुतिष्ठन्ति मे मतम्।
सर्वज्ञानविमूढांस्तान्विद्धि नष्टानचेतसः॥
Ye tv etad abhyasuyanto nanutishthanti me matam,

इन्द्रियस्येन्द्रियस्यार्थे रागद्वेषौ व्यवस्थितौ।
तयोर्न वशमागच्छेत्तौ ह्यस्य परिपन्थिनौ॥
Indriyasyendriyasyarthe raga-dveshau vyavasthitau,
tayor na vasham agachchhet tau hy asya paripanthinau.
अर्थ: हर इंद्रिय के अपने विषय में राग (खिंचाव) और द्वेष (घृणा) छिपे रहते हैं। इनके वश में नहीं होना चाहिए, क्योंकि ये दोनों मनुष्य के रास्ते के लुटेरे (शत्रु) हैं।
Meaning: Attraction and aversion lie in wait in every sense for its objects. Do not fall under their power, for they are robbers on one's path.

श्रेयान्स्वधर्मो विगुणः परधर्मात्स्वनुष्ठितात्।
स्वधर्मे निधनं श्रेयः परधर्मो भयावहः॥

sva-dharme nidhanam shreyah para-dharmo bhayavahah.
अर्थ: दूसरे के धर्म (कर्तव्य) को अच्छी तरह निभाने से अपना धर्म, कमियों के साथ निभाना भी बेहतर है। अपने धर्म में मर जाना भी कल्याणकारी है; दूसरे का धर्म भय देने वाला है।

Verses 3.36–3.43: desire, the enemy within
Arjuna asks what drives people to do wrong; Krishna names desire and anger, and how to master them.
Verse 3.36
अर्जुन उवाच
अथ केन प्रयुक्तोऽयं पापं चरति पूरुषः।

anichchhann api varshneya balad iva niyojitah.
अर्थ: अर्जुन ने कहा: हे वार्ष्णेय, फिर मनुष्य न चाहते हुए भी, मानो ज़बरदस्ती धकेला गया हो, किसकी प्रेरणा से पाप करता है?
Meaning: Arjuna said: Then, Varshneya, what drives a person to do wrong, even against their will, as if pushed by force?
Verse 3.37
श्रीभगवानुवाच।
काम एष क्रोध एष रजोगुणसमुद्भवः॥
महाशनो महापाप्मा विद्ध्येनमिह वैरिणम्॥

mahashano maha-papma viddhy enam iha vairinam.

धूमेनाव्रियते वह्निर्यथादर्शो मलेन च।
यथोल्बेनावृतो गर्भस्तथा तेनेदमावृतम्॥
Dhumenavriyate vahnir yathadarsho malena cha,
yatholbenavrito garbhas tatha tenedam avritam.
अर्थ: जैसे धुएँ से आग ढक जाती है, धूल से दर्पण, और झिल्ली से गर्भ, वैसे ही इस कामना से ज्ञान ढका रहता है।
Meaning: As fire is covered by smoke, a mirror by dust, and an unborn child by the womb, so this understanding is covered by desire.
Verse 3.39
आवृतं ज्ञानमेतेन ज्ञानिनो नित्यवैरिणा।
कामरूपेण कौन्तेय दुष्पूरेणानलेन च॥
Avritam jnanam etena jnanino nitya-vairina,
kama-rupena kaunteya dushpurenanalena cha.
अर्थ: हे कुंतीपुत्र, ज्ञानी के इस सदा के शत्रु, कामना-रूपी आग ने ज्ञान को ढक रखा है, जो कभी भरती नहीं।
Meaning: Son of Kunti, knowledge is covered by this constant enemy of the wise, desire, a fire that can never be filled.
Verse 3.40
इन्द्रियाणि मनो बुद्धिरस्याधिष्ठानमुच्यते।
एतैर्विमोहयत्येष ज्ञानमावृत्य देहिनम्॥
Indriyani mano buddhir asyadhishthanam uchyate,
etair vimohayaty esha jnanam avritya dehinam.
अर्थ: इंद्रियाँ, मन और बुद्धि इसके रहने की जगह कहे जाते हैं। इन्हीं के द्वारा यह ज्ञान को ढककर देहधारी को भ्रमित करती है।

पाप्मानं प्रजहि ह्येनं ज्ञानविज्ञाननाशनम्॥
Tasmat tvam indriyany adau niyamya bharatarshabha,
papmanam prajahi hy enam jnana-vijnana-nashanam.
अर्थ: इसलिए हे भरतश्रेष्ठ, पहले इंद्रियों को वश में करो, और ज्ञान और विज्ञान (अनुभव) का नाश करने वाले इस पापी को मार भगाओ।
Meaning: So, best of the Bharatas, first bring the senses under control, then strike down this wrongdoer that destroys both knowledge and realisation.
Verse 3.42
इन्द्रियाणि पराण्याहुरिन्द्रियेभ्यः परं मनः।
मनसस्तु परा बुद्धिर्यो बुद्धेः परतस्तु सः॥
Indriyani parany ahur indriyebhyah param manah,
manasas tu para buddhir yo buddheh paratas tu sah.
अर्थ: कहते हैं कि इंद्रियाँ (शरीर से) सूक्ष्म और श्रेष्ठ हैं, इंद्रियों से श्रेष्ठ मन है, मन से श्रेष्ठ बुद्धि है, और जो बुद्धि से भी परे है, वह आत्मा है।
Meaning: The senses, it is said, are higher than the body; higher than the senses is the mind; higher than the mind is the intellect; and beyond the intellect is the self.
Verse 3.43
एवं बुद्धेः परं बुद्ध्वा संस्तभ्यात्मानमात्मना।
जहि शत्रुं महाबाहो कामरूपं दुरासदम्॥
Evam buddheh param buddhva samstabhyatmanam atmana,
jahi shatrum maha-baho kama-rupam durasadam.
अर्थ: इस तरह बुद्धि से परे आत्मा को जानकर, अपने आप से अपने मन को स्थिर करके, हे महाबाहु, कामना-रूपी इस कठिन शत्रु को मार डालो।
Meaning: Knowing what is beyond the intellect, and steadying yourself by the self, mighty-armed one, slay this enemy in the form of desire, so hard to overcome.

Questions
What is karma yoga?
In the Gita, karma yoga is doing the work that is yours to do, fully and well, while letting go of attachment to its results and offering it as yajna, for something larger than yourself. Chapter 3 explains why no one can simply give up action (3.4–3.8) and how action done this way stops binding us (3.9).
What does Bhagavad Gita 3.35 mean?
“Shreyan svadharmo vigunah” says it is better to follow your own path and duty, even imperfectly, than to imitate someone else's, even if you could do it well. Arjuna was a warrior thinking of becoming a beggar-monk; Krishna tells him that a path that does not fit one's nature brings danger, not peace.
What does “loka-sangraha” mean?
Literally “holding the world together”: acting for the welfare of everyone and keeping society on a good path. Krishna says the wise should work for this even when they have nothing to gain (3.20, 3.25), because people follow the example of those they respect (3.21).
According to the Gita, why do we do wrong against our will?
Arjuna asks exactly this in 3.36. Krishna answers that it is desire, which turns into anger when blocked (3.37). It hides in the senses, mind and intellect and covers our understanding (3.38–3.40); the remedy he gives is to bring the senses under control and steady the mind by knowing the self (3.41–3.43).
Text and sources
The Sanskrit text is public domain. We checked every verse of this chapter against texts fetched on 1 November 2026: the chapter page on Sanskrit Wikisource (भगवद्गीता/कर्मयोगः), the Sanskrit text of the open gita/gita dataset on GitHub (the same text as IIT Kanpur's Gita Supersite), and, as a third witness, chapter 27 of the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata on Sanskrit Wikisource. The two Gita texts agree word for word; their only differences are spelling slips in the dataset, where we read “nishchitya” (3.2), “kashchit” (3.5, 3.18) and “-asaktash chikirshur” (3.25). The Mahabharata text has no real variant in this chapter, only copying slips. The transliteration and the meanings are our own.
