A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.

What happens in chapter 2

Chapter 1 ended with Arjuna sitting down in his chariot, unwilling to fight his own family and teachers. Chapter 2 opens with Krishna's sharp words to him, and with Arjuna's turning point: he admits he is confused and asks Krishna, “I am your disciple; teach me” (2.7). From verse 11 Krishna teaches, and he hardly stops until the end of the Gita.

He begins with the self (atman): it was never born and will never die, and the body is changed like worn clothes (2.20, 2.22). Then, from 2.39, he turns from knowledge to practice, “yoga”: do your work fully but without clinging to its results. The best-known verse of the Gita is here: “Your right is to the work alone, never to its fruits” (2.47); and the next defines yoga as evenness of mind (2.48) and as skill in action (2.50).

At the end Arjuna asks a practical question: what does a person of steady wisdom (sthitaprajna) look like (2.54)? Krishna's answer, verses 55 to 72, describes someone untroubled by pain, not craving pleasure, free of fear and anger, who draws the senses in like a tortoise (2.58). Verses 2.62–2.63 trace how brooding on things leads step by step to desire, anger and ruin. Mahatma Gandhi had these closing verses recited in the daily prayers of his ashram.

The chapter is named Sankhya Yoga after its first teaching, sankhya meaning the clear knowledge of the self. It is the longest chapter after chapter 18; reading it with the meanings takes about 35 to 40 minutes.

Verses 2.1–2.10: Arjuna asks to be taught

Krishna rebukes Arjuna's weakness; Arjuna, still torn, asks Krishna to teach him and says he will not fight.

Sanjaya uvacha
tam tatha kripayavishtam ashru-purnakulekshanam,
vishidantam idam vakyam uvacha madhusudanah.

अर्थ: संजय ने कहा: करुणा से भरे, आँसुओं से भरी व्याकुल आँखों वाले और दुखी अर्जुन से मधुसूदन (श्रीकृष्ण) ने यह बात कही।

Meaning: Sanjaya said: To Arjuna, overcome with pity, his troubled eyes full of tears, sinking in sorrow, Madhusudana (Krishna) spoke these words.

Verse 2.2

Shri bhagavan uvacha

anarya-jushtam asvargyam akirti-karam arjuna.

अर्थ: श्रीभगवान ने कहा: हे अर्जुन, इस कठिन घड़ी में यह मोह तुम पर कहाँ से आ गया? श्रेष्ठ लोग ऐसा नहीं करते; यह न स्वर्ग दिलाता है, न यश।

Meaning: The Lord said: Arjuna, where has this weakness come from at such a critical hour? It is not the way of noble people, and it leads neither to heaven nor to honour.

Verse 2.3

क्लैब्यं मा स्म गमः पार्थ नैतत्त्वय्युपपद्यते।
क्षुद्रं हृदयदौर्बल्यं त्यक्त्वोत्तिष्ठ परन्तप॥

Klaibyam ma sma gamah partha naitat tvayy upapadyate,
kshudram hridaya-daurbalyam tyaktvottishtha parantapa.

अर्थ: हे पार्थ, कायरता मत अपनाओ; यह तुम्हें शोभा नहीं देती। हे शत्रुओं को तपाने वाले, मन की इस तुच्छ कमज़ोरी को छोड़कर उठ खड़े हो।

Meaning: Do not give in to cowardice, Partha; it does not suit you. Shake off this petty weakness of heart and stand up, scorcher of foes.

Verse 2.4

अर्जुन उवाच
कथं भीष्ममहं संख्ये द्रोणं च मधुसूदन।
इषुभिः प्रति योत्स्यामि पूजार्हावरिसूदन॥

Arjuna uvacha
katham bhishmam aham sankhye dronam cha madhusudana,
ishubhih pratiyotsyami pujarhav arisudana.

अर्थ: अर्जुन ने कहा: हे मधुसूदन, मैं युद्ध में भीष्म और द्रोण पर बाण कैसे चलाऊँ? हे शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले, ये दोनों तो मेरे पूजनीय हैं।

Meaning: Arjuna said: Madhusudana, how can I shoot arrows at Bhishma and Drona in battle? They deserve my worship, slayer of enemies.

Verse 2.5

गुरूनहत्वा हि महानुभावान् श्रेयो भोक्तुं भैक्ष्यमपीह लोके।
हत्वार्थकामांस्तु गुरूनिहैव भुञ्जीय भोगान् रुधिरप्रदिग्धान्॥

Gurun ahatva hi mahanubhavan shreyo bhoktum bhaikshyam apiha loke,
hatvartha-kamams tu gurun ihaiva bhunjiya bhogan rudhira-pradigdhan.

अर्थ: इन महान गुरुओं को मारने से अच्छा है कि इस संसार में भीख माँगकर जी लूँ। उन्हें मारकर तो मैं यहीं खून से सने धन और सुख ही भोगूँगा। (कुछ टीकाकार “अर्थकामान्” को गुरुओं का विशेषण मानते हैं: “धन चाहने वाले गुरु”।)

Meaning: Better to live on alms in this world than to kill these great-souled teachers. If I kill them, all I will enjoy here is wealth and pleasure stained with blood. (Some commentators read artha-kaman as describing the teachers: “elders who seek gain”.)

Verse 2.6

न चैतद्विद्मः कतरन्नो गरीयो यद्वा जयेम यदि वा नो जयेयुः।
यानेव हत्वा न जिजीविषाम स्तेऽवस्थिताः प्रमुखे धार्तराष्ट्राः॥

Na chaitad vidmah kataran no gariyo yad va jayema yadi va no jayeyuh,
yan eva hatva na jijivishamas te 'vasthitah pramukhe dhartarashtrah.

अर्थ: हम यह भी नहीं जानते कि हमारे लिए क्या अच्छा है: हम जीतें या वे हमें जीतें। जिन्हें मारकर हम जीना भी न चाहें, वही धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र सामने खड़े हैं।

Meaning: Nor do we know which is better for us, that we win or that they win. The sons of Dhritarashtra stand before us, and if we killed them we would not even wish to live.

Verse 2.7

कार्पण्यदोषोपहतस्वभावः पृच्छामि त्वां धर्मसम्मूढचेताः।
यच्छ्रेयः स्यान्निश्चितं ब्रूहि तन्मे शिष्यस्तेऽहं शाधि मां त्वां प्रपन्नम्॥

yach chhreyah syan nishchitam bruhi tan me shishyas te 'ham shadhi mam tvam prapannam.

अर्थ: दीनता के दोष ने मेरे स्वभाव को दबा दिया है, और धर्म के बारे में मेरा मन उलझ गया है। मैं आपसे पूछता हूँ: जो निश्चित रूप से मेरे लिए कल्याणकारी हो, वह बताइए। मैं आपका शिष्य हूँ, आपकी शरण में आया हूँ, मुझे सिखाइए।

Meaning: My nature is overpowered by weakness and pity, and my mind is confused about what is right. I ask you: tell me for certain what is best for me. I am your disciple and I come to you for refuge; teach me.

Verse 2.8

न हि प्रपश्यामि ममापनुद्याद् यच्छोकमुच्छोषणमिन्द्रियाणाम्।
अवाप्य भूमावसपत्नमृद्धं राज्यं सुराणामपि चाधिपत्यम्॥

Na hi prapashyami mamapanudyad yach chhokam uchchhoshanam indriyanam,
avapya bhumav asapatnam riddham rajyam suranam api chadhipatyam.

अर्थ: धरती पर बिना शत्रु का समृद्ध राज्य, या देवताओं पर भी अधिकार मिल जाए, तब भी मुझे ऐसा कुछ नहीं दिखता जो इंद्रियों को सुखा देने वाले मेरे इस शोक को दूर कर सके।

Meaning: Even if I won a rich kingdom on earth without a rival, or even lordship over the gods, I cannot see what would take away this grief that is drying up my senses.

Verse 2.9

सञ्जय उवाच
एवमुक्त्वा हृषीकेशं गुडाकेशः परन्तप।
न योत्स्य इति गोविन्दमुक्त्वा तूष्णीं बभूव ह॥

Sanjaya uvacha
evam uktva hrishikesham gudakeshah parantapa,
na yotsya iti govindam uktva tushnim babhuva ha.

अर्थ: संजय ने कहा: हे राजन, श्रीकृष्ण से ऐसा कहकर अर्जुन (गुडाकेश) बोले, “हे गोविंद, मैं युद्ध नहीं करूँगा,” और चुप हो गए।

Meaning: Sanjaya said: Having spoken like this to Krishna, O king, Arjuna (Gudakesha) said to Govinda, “I will not fight,” and fell silent.

Verse 2.10

तमुवाच हृषीकेशः प्रहसन्निव भारत।
सेनयोरुभयोर्मध्ये विषीदन्तमिदं वचः॥

Tam uvacha hrishikeshah prahasann iva bharata,
senayor ubhayor madhye vishidantam idam vachah.

अर्थ: हे भारत (धृतराष्ट्र), तब दोनों सेनाओं के बीच दुखी बैठे अर्जुन से श्रीकृष्ण ने मानो मुस्कराते हुए ये वचन कहे।

Meaning: Then, O Bharata, there between the two armies, Krishna, as if smiling, spoke these words to the grieving Arjuna.

Verses 2.11–2.30: the self that does not die

Krishna's first teaching: the self is eternal, bodies change like clothes, so grief for death is misplaced.

श्रीभगवानुवाच।

Shri bhagavan uvacha
ashochyan anvashochas tvam prajna-vadamsh cha bhashase,
gatasun agatasumsh cha nanushochanti panditah.

अर्थ: श्रीभगवान ने कहा: तुम उनके लिए शोक कर रहे हो जो शोक के योग्य नहीं, और फिर भी ज्ञान की-सी बातें करते हो। ज्ञानी लोग न मरे हुओं के लिए शोक करते हैं, न जीवितों के लिए।

Meaning: The Lord said: You grieve for those who should not be grieved for, and yet you speak words that sound wise. The wise grieve neither for the dead nor for the living.

Verse 2.12

न त्वेवाहं जातु नासं न त्वं नेमे जनाधिपाः।
न चैव न भविष्यामः सर्वे वयमतः परम्॥

Na tv evaham jatu nasam na tvam neme janadhipah,
na chaiva na bhavishyamah sarve vayam atah param.

अर्थ: ऐसा कभी नहीं था कि मैं नहीं था, या तुम नहीं थे, या ये राजा नहीं थे; और ऐसा भी कभी नहीं होगा कि आगे हम सब नहीं रहेंगे।

Meaning: Never was there a time when I did not exist, or you, or these kings; and never will a time come when any of us ceases to be.

Verse 2.13

देहिनोऽस्मिन्यथा देहे कौमारं यौवनं जरा।
तथा देहान्तरप्राप्तिर्धीरस्तत्र न मुह्यति॥

Dehino 'smin yatha dehe kaumaram yauvanam jara,
tatha dehantara-praptir dhiras tatra na muhyati.

अर्थ: जैसे इस शरीर में आत्मा बचपन, जवानी और बुढ़ापे से गुज़रती है, वैसे ही (मृत्यु के बाद) उसे दूसरा शरीर मिलता है। धीर व्यक्ति इससे भ्रमित नहीं होता।

Meaning: Just as the embodied self passes through childhood, youth and old age in this body, so it passes into another body. The steady person is not confused by this.

Verse 2.14

मात्रास्पर्शास्तु कौन्तेय शीतोष्णसुखदुःखदाः।
आगमापायिनोऽनित्यास्तांस्तितिक्षस्व भारत॥

Matra-sparshas tu kaunteya shitoshna-sukha-duhkhadah,
agamapayino 'nityas tams titikshasva bharata.

अर्थ: हे कुंतीपुत्र, इंद्रियों का विषयों से संपर्क ही सर्दी-गर्मी और सुख-दुख देता है। ये आते-जाते रहते हैं, टिकते नहीं; हे भारत, इन्हें धैर्य से सहो।

Meaning: Son of Kunti, it is the contact of the senses with their objects that brings cold and heat, pleasure and pain. These come and go and do not last; bear them patiently, Bharata.

Verse 2.15

यं हि न व्यथयन्त्येते पुरुषं पुरुषर्षभ।
समदुःखसुखं धीरं सोऽमृतत्वाय कल्पते॥

Yam hi na vyathayanty ete purusham purusharshabha,
sama-duhkha-sukham dhiram so 'mritatvaya kalpate.

Verse 2.16

नासतो विद्यते भावो नाभावो विद्यते सतः।
उभयोरपि दृष्टोऽन्तस्त्वनयोस्तत्त्वदर्शिभिः॥

Nasato vidyate bhavo nabhavo vidyate satah,
ubhayor api drishto 'ntas tv anayos tattva-darshibhih.

अर्थ: जो असत् (अस्थायी) है उसका कोई स्थायी अस्तित्व नहीं, और जो सत् है उसका कभी अभाव नहीं होता। सत्य को देखने वालों ने इन दोनों का अंतिम सत्य देख लिया है।

Meaning: The unreal has no lasting being, and the real never ceases to be. Those who see the truth have seen the final nature of both.

Verse 2.17

अविनाशि तु तद्विद्धि येन सर्वमिदं ततम्।
विनाशमव्ययस्यास्य न कश्चित्कर्तुमर्हति॥

ubhau tau na vijanito nayam hanti na hanyate.

Na jayate mriyate va kadachin nayam bhutva bhavita va na bhuyah,
ajo nityah shashvato 'yam purano na hanyate hanyamane sharire.

अर्थ: आत्मा कभी न जन्म लेती है, न मरती है; ऐसा नहीं कि यह एक बार होकर फिर न रहे। यह अजन्मा, नित्य, शाश्वत और पुरातन है; शरीर के मारे जाने पर भी यह नहीं मरती।

Meaning: The self is never born and never dies; it has not come into being and will not cease to be. Unborn, eternal, everlasting and ancient, it is not killed when the body is killed.

Verse 2.21

वेदाविनाशिनं नित्यं य एनमजमव्ययम्।
कथं स पुरुषः पार्थ कं घातयति हन्ति कम्॥

अर्थ: हे पार्थ, जो इसे अविनाशी, नित्य, अजन्मा और अक्षय जानता है, वह किसी को कैसे मरवा सकता है, या किसे मार सकता है?

Meaning: Partha, how can one who knows the self to be indestructible, eternal, unborn and unchanging cause anyone to be killed, or kill anyone?

Verse 2.22

वासांसि जीर्णानि यथा विहाय नवानि गृह्णाति नरोऽपराणि।

tatha sharirani vihaya jirnany anyani samyati navani dehi.

अर्थ: जैसे मनुष्य पुराने कपड़े छोड़कर नए कपड़े पहन लेता है, वैसे ही आत्मा पुराने शरीर छोड़कर नए शरीर धारण करती है।

Meaning: As a person throws away worn-out clothes and puts on new ones, so the embodied self leaves worn-out bodies and enters new ones.

Verse 2.23

नैनं छिन्दन्ति शस्त्राणि नैनं दहति पावकः।
न चैनं क्लेदयन्त्यापो न शोषयति मारुतः॥

nityah sarva-gatah sthanur achalo 'yam sanatanah.

अर्थ: यह काटा नहीं जा सकता, जलाया नहीं जा सकता, भिगोया नहीं जा सकता और सुखाया नहीं जा सकता। यह नित्य है, सब जगह है, स्थिर है, अचल है और सनातन है।

Meaning: It cannot be cut, burnt, wetted or dried. It is eternal, present everywhere, firm, unmoving and timeless.

Verse 2.25

अव्यक्तोऽयमचिन्त्योऽयमविकार्योऽयमुच्यते।
तस्मादेवं विदित्वैनं नानुशोचितुमर्हसि॥

tasmad evam viditvainam nanushochitum arhasi.

अथ चैनं नित्यजातं नित्यं वा मन्यसे मृतम्।
तथापि त्वं महाबाहो नैवं शोचितुमर्हसि॥

Atha chainam nitya-jatam nityam va manyase mritam,
tathapi tvam maha-baho naivam shochitum arhasi.

अर्थ: और अगर तुम इसे बार-बार जन्म लेने वाला और बार-बार मरने वाला भी मानो, तब भी हे महाबाहु, तुम्हें इस तरह शोक नहीं करना चाहिए।

tasmad apariharye 'rthe na tvam shochitum arhasi.

अर्थ: जो जन्मा है उसकी मृत्यु निश्चित है, और जो मरा है उसका जन्म निश्चित है। इसलिए जो टल नहीं सकता, उसके लिए तुम्हें शोक नहीं करना चाहिए।

Meaning: Death is certain for whoever is born, and birth is certain for whoever dies. So you should not grieve over what cannot be avoided.

Verse 2.28

अव्यक्तादीनि भूतानि व्यक्तमध्यानि भारत।
अव्यक्तनिधनान्येव तत्र का परिदेवना॥

Avyaktadini bhutani vyakta-madhyani bharata,
avyakta-nidhanany eva tatra ka paridevana.

Meaning: Beings are unseen before birth, seen in between, and unseen again after death, Bharata. What is there to lament?

Verse 2.29

tasmat sarvani bhutani na tvam shochitum arhasi.

dharmyad dhi yuddhach chhreyo 'nyat kshatriyasya na vidyate.

Meaning: Considering your own duty too, you should not waver. For a warrior nothing is better than a battle fought for what is right.

Verse 2.32

यदृच्छया चोपपन्नं स्वर्गद्वारमपावृतम्।
सुखिनः क्षत्रियाः पार्थ लभन्ते युद्धमीदृशम्॥

sukhinah kshatriyah partha labhante yuddham idrisham.

yesham cha tvam bahu-mato bhutva yasyasi laghavam.

Verse 2.37

हतो वा प्राप्स्यसि स्वर्गं जित्वा वा भोक्ष्यसे महीम्।
तस्मादुत्तिष्ठ कौन्तेय युद्धाय कृतनिश्चयः॥

Hato va prapsyasi svargam jitva va bhokshyase mahim,
tasmad uttishtha kaunteya yuddhaya krita-nishchayah.

अर्थ: युद्ध में मारे गए तो स्वर्ग पाओगे, जीत गए तो धरती का राज्य भोगोगे। इसलिए हे कुंतीपुत्र, युद्ध का निश्चय करके उठो।

Meaning: If you are killed you will reach heaven; if you win you will enjoy the earth. So stand up, son of Kunti, resolved to fight.

Verse 2.38

Verse 2.39

buddhya yukto yaya partha karma-bandham prahasyasi.

अर्थ: अब तक मैंने तुम्हें यह समझ सांख्य (आत्मज्ञान) की दृष्टि से बताई। अब इसे योग (कर्मयोग) की दृष्टि से सुनो, हे पार्थ, जिस बुद्धि से जुड़कर तुम कर्म के बंधन से छूट जाओगे।

Questions

What does Bhagavad Gita 2.47 mean?

“Karmany evadhikaras te” says that our part is the work itself, done well and honestly; the result depends on many things beyond us. It does not say “do not care about results” or “do nothing”: the same verse warns against clinging to inaction. It asks us to act fully without letting anxiety about the outcome rule the mind.

What does “sthitaprajna” mean?

A person whose wisdom (prajna) is steady (sthita). In verses 2.55–2.72 Krishna describes such a person: content within, calm in pain and pleasure, free of craving, fear and anger, with the senses under control. It is the Gita's first portrait of the ideal it teaches.

Why is chapter 2 called Sankhya Yoga?

Krishna first explains the truth about the self, which he calls sankhya, right knowledge (2.11–2.30), and then its practice, which he calls yoga (from 2.39). Here sankhya means this knowledge of the self, not only the later philosophical school of that name.

What does the Gita say happens at death?

In this chapter Krishna says the self is not killed when the body dies (2.20) and takes on a new body as a person puts on new clothes (2.22). For the person of steady wisdom he speaks of reaching brahma-nirvana, the peace of Brahman (2.72).

Text and sources

The Sanskrit text is public domain. We checked every verse of this chapter against texts fetched on 1 November 2026: the chapter page on Sanskrit Wikisource (भगवद्गीता/साङ्ख्ययोगः), the Sanskrit text of the open gita/gita dataset on GitHub (the same text as IIT Kanpur's Gita Supersite), and, as a third witness, chapter 26 of the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata on Sanskrit Wikisource. The two Gita texts agree word for word; their only differences are spelling slips, where we read “dharma-sammudha” and “nishchitam” (2.7), “shrinoti” (2.29), “yuddhach chhreyo” (2.31), “atha chet” (2.33) and “shrinu” (2.39). The Mahabharata text has no real variant in this chapter, only copying slips. The longer verses 2.5–2.8, 2.20, 2.22, 2.29 and 2.70 are in the trishtubh metre and are printed in two long lines, one per half-verse. The transliteration and the meanings are our own.
