Listen: Krishna Aarti: Aarti Kunj Bihari Ki

A computer-voiced recitation over a soft aarti rhythm of claps, bell and manjira, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.

What this aarti is

Kunj Bihari is Krishna who wanders the kunj, the flowering groves of Vrindavan; Giridhar is the one who lifted Govardhan hill; Murari the slayer of the demon Mura. The aarti is a picture more than a prayer: the dark boy with the flute and peacock crown, Radha shining beside him, the gods longing for a glimpse, and the Ganga flowing from his feet. Its author is not known; it is the traditional aarti of the Braj region, sung in the temples of Vrindavan.

When it is sung

  • Janmashtami, at midnight after Krishna's birth is celebrated.
  • Ekadashi and Thursdays, and every evening in many homes with a Laddu Gopal.
  • Radhashtami, Holi and Govardhan puja in Braj.

How to do the aarti

  1. Sit before a picture of Krishna or Laddu Gopal; offer tulsi leaves, a flower and makhan-mishri (butter and sugar) or any sweet.
  2. Light a ghee diya or camphor in the aarti plate; someone rings a bell or everyone claps along.
  3. Sing the aarti, waving the plate slowly clockwise; repeat the refrain after each verse.
  4. Everyone takes the aarti over the flame, then shares the prasad.

Text and sources

The Hindi (Braj) text is a traditional, public-domain aarti. Every line was checked against Drik Panchang and the Sanskrit Documents “Arati Sangrah”; we follow Drik's order and wording where they differ, as the Arati Sangrah text has clear transcription slips (such as “ajemurchan” and “kasak mrid mang”). Variants: the Ganga verse sung second; “nand ke nand, shri anand kand, mohan brij chand” in verse 1; “latan” or “lasan” in verse 2. The transliteration and meanings are our own.
