Durga Saptashati · Chapter 5

Durga Saptashati Chapter 5 (The Devi and the messenger) in Sanskrit with Hindi and English meaning

The last and longest part of the Saptashati begins. Two new demons, Shumbha and Nishumbha, have taken heaven, and the gods go to the Himalaya to remember the Devi’s promise. There they sing “Ya devi sarvabhuteshu”: salutations to the Devi who lives in every being as consciousness, intelligence, sleep, hunger, peace, faith, compassion and mother. Then Kaushiki comes forth from Parvati, and calmly answers the proud proposal of Shumbha’s messenger. All 129 mantras with meaning.

What chapter 5 is about

Chapter 5 opens the third and final part of the Durga Saptashati, the uttama charitra (chapters 5 to 13), devoted to the Devi as Mahasaraswati. Gita Press prints its dedication (viniyoga) and a meditation verse (dhyana) at its head, given here first. The story is new: the demon brothers Shumbha and Nishumbha have taken the three worlds and every god’s office (5.2–5.5). The gods remember the boon the Devi gave them at the end of chapter 4, that she would come whenever remembered (5.6), and go to the Himalaya to praise her.

Their hymn (5.9–5.82) is the most famous passage of the whole Saptashati. After a string of salutations, it repeats one refrain twenty-one times: “Ya devi sarva-bhuteshu …”, “to the Devi who dwells in all beings as …”, naming consciousness, intelligence, sleep, hunger, shadow, power, longing, patience, modesty, peace, faith, beauty, fortune, memory, compassion, contentment, mother, even error (5.14–5.76); a twenty-second verse ends the series with pure consciousness filling the world (5.78). Its message is simple: the divine is not far away but present in every state of every being. The hymn is also recited on its own, as the Tantrokta Devi Sukta or Aparajita Stotra.

Then Parvati comes to bathe in the Ganga, and from the sheath of her body comes forth the Devi called Kaushiki, while Parvati herself turns dark and is known as Kalika (5.85–5.88). Shumbha’s servants Chanda and Munda see Kaushiki and urge their king to add her to the treasures he has taken from the gods (5.90–5.100). His messenger Sugriva brings a proposal; the Devi smiles and replies that she once vowed to marry only one who defeats her in battle (5.120), setting up the battles of the chapters that follow. Gita Press counts 129 mantras here. Reading the Sanskrit takes about 20 minutes; with the meanings, about 50.

Mantras 5.1–5.7: heaven lost, a promise remembered

After the opening dedication and meditation, Shumbha and Nishumbha take heaven and the gods go to the Himalaya.

Questions

Where does “Ya devi sarvabhuteshu” come from?

It is part of the gods’ hymn in chapter 5 of the Durga Saptashati (Devi Mahatmya, from the Markandeya Purana), mantras 5.9–5.82. The gods sing it on the Himalaya after Shumbha and Nishumbha drive them from heaven. Each verse salutes the Devi who dwells in all beings as a particular quality, such as intelligence, peace, faith, compassion or mother. The same passage is recited on its own as the Tantrokta Devi Sukta, often at the end of a full reading.

Why does chapter 5 have 129 mantras?

Gita Press counts each “namas tasyai” of the 22 refrain verses as a separate mantra, so those verses make 66 “three-part” mantras; with 54 ordinary verses and 9 speaker lines such as “the sage said”, the total is 129. This counting is what brings the whole Saptashati to 700. Editions of the Markandeya Purana, where this is chapter 85, number the same text as about 80 verses.

Who are Kaushiki and Kalika in chapter 5?

When the gods are praising the Devi, Parvati comes to bathe, and a goddess comes forth from the sheath (kosha) of her body; for that reason she is called Kaushiki (5.87). She is the Devi who faces Shumbha and Nishumbha in the chapters that follow. Parvati herself then turns dark and is called Kalika (5.88). Commentators understand these as forms of the one Devi.

What is the Devi’s vow in chapter 5?

To Shumbha’s marriage proposal she replies that long ago she vowed: “He who defeats me in battle, who takes away my pride, who is my equal in strength, shall be my husband” (5.120). She calls the vow one made “out of little understanding”, which commentators read as gentle irony. No one can meet that condition, and the battles of chapters 6 to 10 follow from it.

Text and sources

The Sanskrit text is public domain. We checked all 129 mantras, the viniyoga and dhyana, and the colophon one by one against three independent sources fetched for this page: the Gita Press “Shri Durga Saptashati” (Gorakhpur) in two archive.org scans and their OCR text, the full Durga Saptashati text on sanskritdocuments.org (doc_devii/durga700, whose numbering of the refrain verses also matches Gita Press), and chapter 85 of the Markandeya Purana on Sanskrit Wikisource, comparing the last two with ours by program after normalising punctuation and nasal spelling. We follow the Gita Press reading and numbering throughout; Wikisource agrees with it in almost every line. Where sanskritdocuments differs we follow Gita Press and Wikisource: “vyapti-devyai” (5.77; sanskritdocuments “vyaptyai devyai”), “stavadi-yuktanam” (5.84; “stavabhi-”), “chakhyata ativa” (5.90; “sativa”), “nishumbho va mahasurah” (5.121; “mahabalah”), “nishumbhash chati-viryavan” (5.128; “chapi tadrishah”) and “karotu tat” (5.129; “yat”). In 5.104 Gita Press reads “sa devi tam tatah praha”, while the other two have “tam cha devim tatah praha”, which Gita Press gives as a variant. In 5.11 Gita Press notes the variant “pranatah” for “pranatam”, and in 5.109 the variants “gaja-ratnani” and “hritam”. Gita Press also notes an extra half-verse after 5.4 in some copies (“anyesham chadhikaran sa svayam evadhitishthati”) and a speaker line “Shumbha uvacha” after 5.102 in some copies, which Wikisource prints; like Gita Press we leave both out of the count. The viniyoga and dhyana follow Gita Press. The transliteration and meanings are our own.
