Durga Saptashati Chapter 4 (The gods’ hymn, Shakradi Stuti) in Sanskrit with Hindi and English meaning

With Mahishasura gone, Indra and the gods bow before the Devi and sing one of the most loved hymns of the Saptashati: she is good fortune in good homes, understanding in the wise, faith in the good; remembered, she takes away every creature’s fear. What chapter 4 is about

Chapter 4 closes the middle part of the Durga Saptashati (the madhyama charitra, chapters 2 to 4), in which the Devi appears as Mahalakshmi. In chapter 3 she defeated the buffalo-demon Mahishasura. Now the sage Medhas tells King Suratha how Indra (Shakra) and the gods praised her; that is why the chapter is called Shakradi Stuti, “the hymn of Shakra and the others”. Most of it is poetry in a long, flowing metre (4.2–4.23).

The hymn sees the Devi everywhere: as good fortune in the homes of the virtuous, understanding in the wise, faith in the good (4.5); as Svaha and Svadha, the words of offering (4.8); as the Vedas and as ordinary livelihood (4.10). Verse 4.17, “Durge smrita harasi bhitim”, is among the most often recited lines of the whole text: remembered, she takes away fear and gives a good mind. The gods even see mercy in her battles: she uses weapons rather than a burning glance so that her enemies too may be purified and reach heaven (4.18–4.19). Four short verses (4.24–4.27) ask for her protection on every side; they are also used in the preparatory rites (nyasa) before a full reading.

Pleased, the Devi offers a boon. The gods say nothing is left to ask, but request that whenever they remember her she will remove their troubles, and that she will bless whoever praises her with these hymns (4.34–4.37). She agrees and vanishes, and the sage announces the next story: how she arose again from the body of Gauri to face Shumbha and Nishumbha (4.41). Gita Press counts 42 mantras, including five speaker lines and two half-verses. Reading the Sanskrit takes about 10 minutes; with the meanings, about 25.

Mantras 4.1–4.23: the hymn of Indra and the gods

Meaning: You are the cause of all the worlds. Though you hold the three gunas, their faults are not seen in you; even Vishnu, Shiva and the others cannot find your limit. You are the refuge of all; this whole world is a part of you, for you are the first, the unmanifest, the supreme Nature.

Meaning: You are the very soul of sacred sound, the treasury of the pure Rig and Yajur Vedas and of the Sama Veda with its lovely Udgitha chants. You are the Devi, the three Vedas, the Blessed One; to sustain the world you are livelihood (farming and trade), and you take away the deepest pain of all the worlds.

Meaning: O Devi, you are the Intelligence that knows the heart of all the scriptures. You are Durga, the boat across the hard-to-cross ocean of worldly life, clinging to nothing. You are Shri, who lives in the heart of Vishnu alone, the foe of Kaitabha, and you are Gauri, honoured by Shiva who wears the moon.

अर्थ: आपका मुख हल्की मुस्कान वाला, निर्मल, पूर्ण चंद्रमा के समान और उत्तम सोने की कांति से सुंदर है; फिर भी उसे देखते ही क्रोध में भरे महिषासुर ने उस पर वार किया, यह बड़े आश्चर्य की बात है।

Meaning: Your face is gently smiling, spotless, like the full moon’s disc, lovely with the glow of the finest gold; and yet Mahishasura, seized with anger, struck at it the moment he saw it. That is a great wonder.

अर्थ: और हे देवी, क्रोध से भरा, तनी भौंहों से विकराल और उगते चंद्रमा जैसा लाल आपका मुख देखकर भी महिष ने तुरंत प्राण नहीं छोड़े, यह उससे भी बड़ा आश्चर्य है; क्योंकि क्रोधित यमराज को देखकर कौन जीवित रह सकता है?

Meaning: And, O Devi, that Mahisha did not give up his life at once on seeing that face in anger, fierce with knitted brows, red as the rising moon, is stranger still; for who can live after looking on Death in anger?

Verse 4.14

vijnatam etad adhunaiva yad astam etan nitam balam suvipulam mahishasurasya.

अर्थ: हे देवी, प्रसन्न होइए। आप परम हैं; आपके प्रसन्न होने से जगत का कल्याण होता है, और क्रोधित होने पर आप तुरंत कुलों के कुल नष्ट कर देती हैं। यह हमने अभी देख लिया, जब महिषासुर की इतनी विशाल सेना समाप्त हो गई।

Meaning: O Devi, be gracious. You are supreme: pleased, you bring the world to well-being; angered, you destroy whole clans at once. We have just seen this, now that the vast army of Mahishasura has been brought to its end.

Verse 4.15

ते सम्मता जनपदेषु धनानि तेषां तेषां यशांसि न च सीदति धर्मवर्गः।
धन्यास्त एव निभृतात्मजभृत्यदारा येषां सदाभ्युदयदा भवती प्रसन्ना॥

Te sammata janapadeshu dhanani tesham tesham yashamsi na cha sidati dharma-vargah,
dhanyas ta eva nibhritatmaja-bhritya-dara yesham sadabhyudayada bhavati prasanna.

Meaning: Those on whom you, the giver of lasting good, are pleased are honoured among people; theirs are wealth and good name, their dharma does not weaken, and they are truly blessed, with devoted children, servants and spouse. (Some editions read “bandhu-vargah” for “dharma-vargah”: their family circle does not suffer.)

Verse 4.16

धर्म्याणि देवि सकलानि सदैव कर्माण्यत्यादृतः प्रतिदिनं सुकृती करोति।
स्वर्गं प्रयाति च ततो भवतीप्रसादाल्लोकत्रयेऽपि फलदा ननु देवि तेन॥

Meaning: O Devi, by your grace the good person does every righteous deed, every day, with great care, and through it reaches heaven. So it is you, O Devi, who give the fruit of action in all three worlds.

Verse 4.17

Meaning: O Durga, when remembered you take away the fear of every living being, and when those at peace remember you, you give them a mind that is truly good. Remover of poverty, sorrow and fear, who but you has a heart always soft with care to help everyone?

एभिर्हतैर्जगदुपैति सुखं तथैते कुर्वन्तु नाम नरकाय चिराय पापम्।

Ebhir hatair jagad upaiti sukham tathaite kurvantu nama narakaya chiraya papam,
sangrama-mrityum adhigamya divam prayantu matveti nunam ahitan vinihamsi devi.

अर्थ: “इनके मरने से संसार को सुख मिले, और भले ही इन्होंने लंबे नरक के योग्य पाप किए हों, युद्ध में मृत्यु पाकर ये स्वर्ग जाएँ”, हे देवी, निश्चय ही यही सोचकर आप शत्रुओं को मारती हैं।

Meaning: “Let the world find peace by their end; and though they have sinned enough for a long stay in hell, let them die in battle and reach heaven”: surely it is with this thought, O Devi, that you slay the enemies.

Verse 4.19

दृष्ट्वैव किं न भवती प्रकरोति भस्म सर्वासुरानरिषु यत्प्रहिणोषि शस्त्रम्।

Drishtvaiva kim na bhavati prakaroti bhasma sarvasuran arishu yat prahinoshi shastram,
lokan prayantu ripavo ’pi hi shastra-puta ittham matir bhavati teshv api te ’tisadhvi.

अर्थ: आप केवल दृष्टि डालकर ही सब असुरों को भस्म क्यों नहीं कर देतीं, शत्रुओं पर शस्त्र क्यों चलाती हैं? “शस्त्र से पवित्र होकर शत्रु भी उत्तम लोकों में जाएँ”, उनके प्रति भी आपका विचार ऐसा अत्यंत दयालु है।

Meaning: Why do you not turn all the demons to ash with a single glance, but send your weapons against them? “Let even enemies, made pure by my weapon, reach the higher worlds”: such is your most gentle intention, even towards them.

Verse 4.20

अर्थ: आपकी तलवार की भयंकर चमक और त्रिशूल की नोक के तेज से भी असुरों की आँखें नष्ट नहीं हुईं, क्योंकि वे चमकते चंद्रमा जैसे आपके सुंदर मुख को देख रहे थे।

Meaning: That the demons’ eyes were not destroyed by the fierce flashing of your sword and the blaze from the tip of your spear was only because they were gazing at your face, lovely as the shining crescent moon.

Verse 4.21

Meaning: O Devi, your nature is to calm the ways of the wicked; this form of yours is beyond thought and beyond compare; your might destroys those who had crushed the strength of the gods. In this way you have shown mercy even to your enemies.

अर्थ: आपके इस पराक्रम की तुलना किससे हो? शत्रुओं को भय देने वाला और फिर भी अत्यंत मनोहर ऐसा रूप और कहाँ है? हे वर देने वाली देवी, हृदय में करुणा और युद्ध में कठोरता, ये दोनों तीनों लोकों में केवल आपमें ही देखी गई हैं।

Meaning: With what can this valour of yours be compared? Where else is a form that strikes fear in enemies and yet is so beautiful? O boon-giving Devi, mercy in the heart and sternness in battle are seen together in you alone, in all three worlds.

Verse 4.23

त्रैलोक्यमेतदखिलं रिपुनाशनेन त्रातं त्वया समरमूर्धनि तेऽपि हत्वा।

Meaning: By destroying the enemies you have saved the whole of the three worlds; slaying them at the front of battle, you led even those enemy hosts to heaven, and you have taken away our fear of the maddened foes of the gods. Salutations to you.

Questions

Why is Durga Saptashati chapter 4 called Shakradi Stuti?

Shakra is a name of Indra, king of the gods. After Mahishasura’s defeat, Indra and the other gods (“Shakra and the others”) sing a hymn to the Devi, and the colophon names the chapter after them. The same hymn is often recited on its own.

What is the meaning of “Durge smrita harasi bhitim ashesha-jantoh”?

It is verse 4.17: “O Durga, when remembered you take away the fear of every living being; when those at peace remember you, you give them a truly good mind. Remover of poverty, sorrow and fear, who but you has a heart always tender to help everyone?” Many people recite this one verse daily.

What boon do the gods ask for in chapter 4?

They say she has already done everything by defeating Mahishasura, but ask that whenever they remember her she will take away their worst troubles, and that she will bless with wealth and well-being anyone who praises her with these hymns (4.35–4.37). She says “So be it” (4.39). In chapter 5 the gods recall this promise when new demons drive them from heaven.

Text and sources

The Sanskrit text is public domain. We checked all 42 mantras and the colophon one by one against three independent sources fetched for this page: the Gita Press “Shri Durga Saptashati” (Gorakhpur) in two archive.org scans and their OCR text, the full Durga Saptashati text on sanskritdocuments.org (doc_devii/durga700), and chapter 84 of the Markandeya Purana on Sanskrit Wikisource, comparing the last two with ours by program after normalising punctuation and nasal spelling. We follow the Gita Press reading and numbering throughout; Wikisource agrees with Gita Press in almost every place. The sanskritdocuments text differs in several lines, and there we follow Gita Press and Wikisource: “charitani tavadbhutani” (4.6; sanskritdocuments “tavati yani”), “devi trayi … varta cha” (4.10; “vartasi”), “dharma-vargah” (4.15; “bandhu-vargah”), “teshv api te ’tisadhvi” (4.19; “teshv ahiteshu sadhvi”), “chatyartha-ghorani” (4.26; “chatyanta”), and “dhupais tu dhupita” (4.30; Gita Press notes the variant “sudhupita”). In 4.21 Gita Press reads “hata-deva-parakramanam” where the other two have “hrita-” (“who had taken away the gods’ might”). Gita Press notes lines found only in some manuscripts, which Wikisource prints: a verse after 4.1 (“tatah sura-ganah sarve devya indra-purogamah …”), a half-verse after 4.32 (“dadamy aham atipritya stavair ebhih supujita”, in modern Markandeya Purana copies), and a verse in which the gods reply (“kartavyam aparam yach cha …”); like Gita Press we leave them out of the count. In 4.41 some copies read “gauri-deha sa”. Gita Press also prints a meditation verse (dhyana) on Durga as Jaya, beginning “kalabhrabham”, at the head of this chapter; it is a liturgical addition, not one of the 42 mantras, and is not included here. The transliteration and meanings are our own.
