Listen: Kali Chalisa

A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.

Who Kali is, and what the chalisa is

Kali is the Divine Mother in her most powerful form. Her name comes from kala, time, and also means “the dark one”: she is time itself, before which every form comes and goes, and the deep dark from which light is born. In the Devi Mahatmya she springs from the brow of Durga to defeat Chanda, Munda and Raktabija; in Bengal and across eastern India she is loved simply as Ma, the Mother, the tender protector of her children.

Her images look fierce: dark skin, a garland of heads, a sword, the tongue out. Tradition reads them as symbols. The heads are the ego and its many forms, cut away; the sword is knowledge that frees. The best-known story, which the chalisa also tells, is about compassion: when her fury after battle would not cool, Shiva lay down in her path, and when her foot touched him she recognised him, put out her tongue and grew calm.

A chalisa is a hymn of about forty verses (chalis means forty) in simple old Hindi. This Kali Chalisa, which begins Jai Kali kalimal haran, opens with a doha, has forty chaupais (couplets) and closes with a doha. It describes her eight arms and what each holds, her companions Bhairava and the sixty-four yoginis, her battles in every age, and ends with a personal prayer for her kind glance. No poet is named; it is a traditional devotional text. Several different hymns are printed under the same name; this is the one most widely shared. Many families recite it in Navratri and at Kali Puja, and keeping a regular time can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Questions

Who wrote the Kali Chalisa?

No poet is named in the text, and no edition gives an author. It is a traditional devotional hymn, passed on in small printed booklets and in singing.

Why does Kali show her tongue?

The chalisa tells the best-known story: after the battle her fury would not cool, so Shiva lay down in her path. When her foot touched him she recognised him, put out her tongue in surprise and grew calm. The image is remembered as the moment fierce power turned back into the Mother's tenderness.

Is there more than one Kali Chalisa?

Yes. Several different hymns are printed under this name, for example one beginning Jai Kali jagadamb jai and a longer one of fifty-four verses. This page gives the one beginning Jai Kali kalimal haran, the version most widely shared, also printed as the Kalratri Chalisa for the seventh night of Navratri.

Is Kali connected with any planet in Jyotish?

Some Jyotish traditions pair the ten Mahavidyas with the planets and associate Kali with Saturn (Shani), the planet of time. The chalisa itself is a hymn of devotion to the Mother, not a remedy or a guarantee of any result.

Text and sources

The text was compared line by line across four published versions: Bhakti Bharat (bhaktibharat.com, “Kali Chalisa: Ari mad maan mitavan haari”), Aaj Tak (aajtak.in, printed as the Kalratri Chalisa), Shlokam (shlokam.org) and Tring (tring.co.in). Tring follows Bhakti Bharat line for line, so it is not counted as independent. All agree on the opening doha, the forty chaupais and the closing doha. Drik Panchang prints a different, longer hymn under the same name, and Bhakti Bharat carries two others (“Jai Kali jagadamb jai” and “Jai Kali kankal malini”); they are not used here.

Variants (our reading first): ch. 9 mahaashakti (Bhakti Bharat misprints it mahshakti); ch. 8 rishi-muni (also rishee-muni); ch. 32 kou (Shlokam: kau); ch. 6 kar damakat (often printed run together, kardamakat); ch. 30 karun (printed karoon); ch. 17 and 29 badhyau, baadhyo (also spelt with ढ़). Small spelling differences such as anusvara and nasal signs are not listed. In ch. 27 we read ye baalak lakhi as “seeing this, Shiva came like a child”. The transliteration and both meanings are our own.
