Listen: Krishna Chalisa

A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.

Who Shri Krishna is, and what the chalisa is

Shri Krishna is the eighth avatar of Vishnu, and for many devotees the fullest one. He was born to Devaki and Vasudeva in Kansa's prison in Mathura, carried across the Yamuna that night and raised by Yashoda and Nanda among the cowherds of Gokul and Vrindavan. His childhood is full of loved stories: the stolen butter, the serpent Kaliya, Mount Govardhan lifted on one finger, the raas dance with the gopis and Radha. As a grown man he became the friend of the Pandavas, Arjuna's charioteer in the Mahabharata war, and the teacher of the Bhagavad Gita.

A chalisa is a hymn of about forty verses (chalis means forty) in simple Hindi. The Krishna Chalisa opens with two dohas describing Krishna's form, has forty chaupais (couplets) and closes with a doha. The chaupais retell his life in order, from Putana and Govardhan to Kansa, Sudama, Vidura, the Gita and Draupadi, and bring in the later devotee Meera, who drank poison sent by the Rana and was not harmed. The poet names himself in the thirty-eighth chaupai: Sundardas. Nothing more is known about him; it is a traditional hymn, printed in prayer books across North India.

Many families recite it on Janmashtami and on Ekadashi, and keeping a regular day can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Shri Krishna Chalisa, with meaning

Questions

Who wrote the Krishna Chalisa?

The poet names himself in the thirty-eighth chaupai: Sundardas. Nothing else is recorded about him. The chalisa has been printed without any other author in prayer books for generations.

Why does a hymn to Krishna mention Meera?

Meera, the 16th-century poet-saint of Rajasthan, is one of Krishna's best-loved devotees. The story goes that the Rana sent her poison and a snake in a basket, and Krishna protected her each time. The chalisa places her among the devotees Krishna saved, alongside Sudama, Vidura and Draupadi.

What is the story of the blade of grass and Jarasandha?

Jarasandha had been born in two halves that a demoness joined together, so he could not be killed in the usual way. During Bhima's wrestling match with him, Krishna split a blade of grass and threw the two halves in opposite directions; Bhima understood, tore Jarasandha in two and kept the halves apart.

Is Krishna connected with any planet in Jyotish?

Classical Jyotish texts traditionally link the Krishna avatar with the Moon. This is a traditional association; the chalisa itself is a hymn of devotion, not a remedy or a guarantee of any result.

Text and sources

The Krishna Chalisa is a traditional, public-domain devotional hymn. Every line was compared across three independent texts: Sanskrit Documents (sanskritdocuments.org, krishna40; the Bharat Discovery text is the same), Bhakti Bharat (bhaktibharat.com) and two printings of Randhir Prakashan's chalisa collection, Haridwar (Aarti Chalisa Sangrah, 2000, and 51 Chalisa Sangrah, 2004). All have the same two dohas, forty chaupais and closing doha in the same order. Where they differ we follow the reading most of them share.

Variants: doha 2 poorn Indra is printed so everywhere and is generally understood as poorn Indu, “the full moon”, which is how we translate it; ch. 5 teri … meri (the printings; Sanskrit Documents terau … merau; Bhakti Bharat hove poorn manorath mero); ch. 8 ranjit (Sanskrit Documents raajit); ch. 9 kaachhan kaachhe (Sanskrit Documents kaachhani kaachhe); ch. 13 lakhatahin (the printings and Bhakti Bharat lakhitahin); ch. 14 moosar (Bhakti Bharat misprints masoor); ch. 23 shat dash, sixteen (the scanned printings read ghat das); ch. 24 sahaara (the printings sanhaara); ch. 29 Bhaarat (the scans Maarath) and thaake (Bhakti Bharat taake); ch. 34 tab (the printings tav); ch. 37 bachaavat naiya (Sanskrit Documents bachaavai); ch. 40 ki jai (the printings ki jay). Small spelling differences (मार्‍यो/मारयो, नथैया/नथइया) are not listed. The transliteration and both meanings are our own.
