Shri Narmada Chalisa: lyrics with meaning
Forty verses to Mother Narmada, the holy river of central India, also called Reva. Below is the full text in Hindi, the same in English letters, and a plain meaning for every verse.
Listen: Narmada Chalisa
A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.
Who Mother Narmada is, and what the chalisa is
The Narmada, also called Reva, rises at Amarkantak in the Maikal hills of Madhya Pradesh and runs west for about 1,300 kilometres, through Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, to the Gulf of Khambhat. It is one of the few great rivers of India that flows west, and one of its seven most sacred. The Puranas, above all the Reva Khanda of the Skanda Purana, tell that she was born from Shiva himself, which is why she is called Shankari and Somodbhava, “born of Shiva”, and why the smooth stones of her bed are worshipped as Shiva lingas (Narmadeshwar). She is pictured as a young goddess seated on a lotus, riding a makara, the river crocodile.
An old saying, found in the Puranas and repeated in this chalisa, compares the holy rivers: the Yamuna purifies in seven days, the Saraswati in three, the Ganga at once, and the Narmada at a single sight. Pilgrims honour her by walking the Narmada parikrama, a journey on foot along both banks from source to sea and back.
A chalisa is a hymn of about forty verses (chalis means forty) in simple Hindi. The Narmada Chalisa opens with two dohas, has forty chaupais (couplets) and closes with one doha. It tells of her birth at Amarkantak on the seventh day of the bright half of Magha (celebrated as Narmada Jayanti), describes her form, her makara and her countless holy places, compares her with the other sacred rivers, and ends with a simple prayer. No poet is named; it is printed without an author in chalisa collections and on devotional sites. The hopes it voices are words of devotion, not promises.
Many families recite it on Narmada Jayanti and on the river's banks, and keeping a regular day can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Questions
Who wrote the Narmada Chalisa?
No poet is named in the text or in any edition we found. It is a traditional devotional hymn, printed without an author in chalisa collections such as those of Randhir Prakashan, Haridwar, and on devotional sites.
Why is the Narmada also called Reva?
Reva comes from a root meaning “to leap” or “to flow swiftly”, for the river that jumps over rocks in rapids and falls. Narmada is usually explained as “the giver of delight”. The chalisa uses both names, and also calls her the daughter of the Mekal hills, where she rises.
What is a Narmadeshwar Shivling?
A smooth, egg-shaped stone from the bed of the Narmada, shaped naturally by the river. Because tradition holds that the Narmada was born of Shiva, these stones are worshipped as Shiva lingas without any further consecration; the chalisa's line about bones turning to stone in her waters reflects the same belief in the river's power.
What does the verse about the Yamuna, Saraswati and Ganga mean?
It repeats a well-known Puranic saying about the holy rivers: bathing in the Yamuna purifies in seven days, in the Saraswati in three, in the Ganga at once, while the Narmada purifies at a single sight. It is a way of praising her greatness, not a ranking of the other rivers.
Text and sources
The text was compared line by line across three independent versions: the Randhir Prakashan chalisa collections (Haridwar; Aarti Chalisa Sangrah, 2000, and 51 Chalisa Sangrah, 2004, scanned on archive.org), Aaj Tak (aajtak.in) and Bhakti Bharat (bhaktibharat.com; InstaAstro's text is a copy of it and is not counted separately). All have the same two opening dohas, forty chaupais in the same order and one closing doha; no poet or date is named. The 2000 printing leaves out chaupais 2 to 4 (the birth at Amarkantak), which the 2004 printing and both other sources have.
Variants: opening doha poojit (Aaj Tak, Bhakti Bharat; the print has poojita); ch. 2 nikleen (Bhakti Bharat nikli); ch. 4 Soorya (Bhakti Bharat misprints surya) and Ashvani, i.e. the star Ashvini; ch. 9 magarmachchh (Bhakti Bharat magarmachchha); ch. 14 gaavain (Bhakti Bharat gavain); ch. 17 Saraswati (the print has Sarasuti); ch. 19 karke asnaana (print, Aaj Tak; Bhakti Bharat kar ke snaana) and nar naana, “many generations”, from the print, where Aaj Tak and Bhakti Bharat read nar naara, which gives no clear sense; ch. 20 tumhri bhajan (print tumhi); ch. 21 koti janon ko taara (Bhakti Bharat adds hai); ch. 22 Samodbhava in every source, read as Somodbhava, “born of Shiva”; ch. 23 tum mahima kahi nahin jaai (print, Aaj Tak; Bhakti Bharat tumhri … nahin); ch. 26 var vaari (Bhakti Bharat vaari with a short vowel), translated cautiously as “your blessed water”; ch. 28 Sarasuti teen dinon mein deteen (print, Aaj Tak; Bhakti Bharat Saraswati … deeno … deti). Small spelling differences (raajen/raajain, yahaan/yahan) are not listed. The transliteration and both meanings are our own.
