A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.

Who Parvati is, and what the chalisa is

Parvati, “the daughter of the mountain”, is the daughter of Himavan, king of the Himalaya, and his queen Mena, and the wife of Shiva. The Puranas tell that in an earlier birth she was Sati, the daughter of Daksha, who gave up her body when her father insulted Shiva; reborn as Parvati, she won Shiva again through a penance so hard that she gave up even leaves, and they were married on Kailash. She is the mother of Ganesha and Kartikeya, and she is known by many names: Gauri, the fair one; Uma; Bhavani; Annapurna, who feeds the world from Kashi; and, in her fierce forms, Durga and Kali.

A chalisa is a hymn of about forty verses (chalis means forty) in simple old Hindi. The Parvati Chalisa opens with a doha, has forty chaupais (couplets) and closes with a doha. It describes her beauty and her court on Kailash, praises Shiva, who drank the poison of the ocean, tells how the Ganga came to rest on his head, and then retells her penance for Shiva, the seven sages who tested her, and her marriage. No poet is named in the text. It is a traditional hymn, printed for decades in chalisa collections and sung in homes across North India.

Many women recite it in the month of Shravan and at Gauri festivals such as Hartalika Teej and Gangaur, and keeping a regular day can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Questions

Who wrote the Parvati Chalisa?

No poet is named in the text and no author is recorded. It is a traditional devotional hymn, printed without an author in chalisa collections and on devotional sites.

Are Parvati and Sati the same goddess?

Tradition sees them as one goddess in two births. As Sati, daughter of Daksha, she gave up her body; reborn as Parvati, daughter of the Himalaya, she married Shiva again. The chalisa calls her both Dakshaje (daughter of Daksha) and Himalaya nandini (daughter of the Himalaya).

Why does the chalisa tell the story of the Ganga?

In the poem, Ganga is overawed by Parvati's beauty and comes rushing from Vishnu's feet to Shiva like a rival; Shiva takes her onto his head. It is a playful, affectionate way of explaining why the river flows from Shiva's hair.

Is Parvati connected with any planet?

Some Jyotish traditions associate Gauri with the Moon and with Venus, the planets of feeling and of marriage. The chalisa itself is a hymn of devotion to Parvati, not a remedy or a guarantee of any result.

Text and sources

The text was compared line by line across three independent versions: the printed Aarti Chalisa Sangrah (Randhir Prakashan, Haridwar, 2000; scanned on archive.org), Drik Panchang (drikpanchang.com) and Bhakti Bharat (bhaktibharat.com; Tring's text is a copy of it). All three have the same doha, forty chaupais and closing doha, in the same order. Where they differ, we follow the reading the printed book and Drik Panchang share. No version names an author.

Variants: ch. 3 hit sajaata (Bhakti Bharat hiy sajaata); ch. 9 jatit (Bhakti Bharat jadit); ch. 11 vikaasin (Bhakti Bharat vikaasini); ch. 18 keenhon … deenhon (Bhakti Bharat kinho … dinho); ch. 34 बिलोकि रिषि (Bhakti Bharat बिलोकी ऋषि); ch. 35 saptarishi … sidhaareu (Bhakti Bharat saptrishi … siddhaareu); ch. 38 kahi (Bhakti Bharat kahee); ch. 39 Shiv son he bhaama (Bhakti Bharat leaves out he); closing doha koot chandrika (Bhakti Bharat kooti). In ch. 9 the words “there shine Hari and the four-faced one” are read as Vishnu and Brahma attending Parvati's court; in the closing doha koot chandrika is read as “a crown of moonlight”. Small spelling differences (Shambhu/Shambhoo, kunkum/kunkunm) are not listed. The transliteration and both meanings are our own.
