What the Ganesh Chalisa is

Ganesha (also called Ganapati or Vinayaka) is the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati. He is known as Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles, and as the giver of wisdom and good sense. That is why every puja, wedding and new venture in Hindu homes begins with his name: he is worshipped first.

A chalisa is a hymn of about forty verses. The Ganesh Chalisa is written in simple old Hindi (Awadhi): it opens with a doha, praises Ganesha's form, tells the story of his birth, how he got his elephant head and how he became the one worshipped first, and closes with two dohas.

The poet names himself inside the text: “Bhajat Ramsundar prabhudasa”, Ramsundar, the Lord's servant, sings this. Beyond that one line little is known about him; tradition links him with the area around Prayag. It is an old devotional text, recited in homes everywhere.

Many families recite it on Wednesdays and before beginning something new, and keeping a regular day can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Questions

Who wrote the Ganesh Chalisa?

The text names its poet in the second-to-last chaupai: Ramsundar, who calls himself the Lord's servant. Little else is known about him; tradition links him with the region around Prayag.

Can I read it without knowing Hindi, or without any puja items?

Yes. Read from the English letters and glance at the meanings. A diya, durva grass and a sweet are lovely if you have them, but a calm mind and folded hands are enough.

Why does the chalisa tell the story of Shani and the elephant head?

It follows one of the traditional accounts of Ganesha's birth, in which Shani's glance takes the child's head and Vishnu brings an elephant's head. Other well-known versions tell it differently; the chalisa ends with Shiva blessing Ganesha to be worshipped first.

Is the Ganesh Chalisa connected to any planet?

In Jyotish, Ganesha is traditionally associated with Ketu and with Mercury (Budh). The chalisa itself is a hymn of devotion to Ganesha, not a remedy or a guarantee of any result.

Text and sources

The Shri Ganesh Chalisa is a traditional, public-domain Hindi (Awadhi) devotional text; its poet names himself as Ramsundar in chaupai 37. We compared every line across four independent transcriptions (Drik Panchang, whose text Bhakti Bharat and Vedic Feed share; Shubh Panchang; Hindu Blog; and Prabhat Khabar, checked against the partial text on Bharat Discovery). Where they differ we follow the most common recitation and use standard spellings (for example shubh, vinayak, shuchi, suhavan, mushak, nabh, padatahin, where one family of copies has small typing slips). The transliterations and meanings are our own.

Variants we noted: chaupai 1 Ganapati Ganaraju (some copies: Ganapati raju); 7 vishva-vikhyata (one copy: vishva-vidhata); 8 chanvar sudhare (one copy: chanvar dulave); 16 पलना palna, cradle (others: पालना paalna); 24 Uma ur (some: Uma kar); 28 sidhaye, rhyming with laye (others: sidhayo); 32 rache baith (others: rachi baith, rache baithi); 37 jag Prayag (one copy: lakh Prayag); 38 shakti bhakti (others: bhakti shakti); one copy places chaupais 33 and 34 in reverse order; closing doha 1 path karai kar dhyan (others: path kare dhar dhyan). All of these keep the same meaning.
