Listen: Vaishno Devi Chalisa

A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.

Who Vaishno Devi is, and what the chalisa is

Mata Vaishno Devi is the Mother worshipped in a cave on Mount Trikuta, above Katra in Jammu, one of the most visited shrines in India. There is no image in the cave: she is present in three natural rock forms, the pindis, seen as Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati together. The shrine's story tells that she was born as Vaishnavi, a girl who longed to serve Vishnu, that Rama promised to accept her in a later age, and that she went to Trikuta to wait in meditation.

A chalisa is a hymn of about forty verses (chalis means forty) in simple Hindi. The Vaishno Devi Chalisa opens with a doha, has forty chaupais and closes with a doha. It retells the pilgrimage story stage by stage: her birth and Rama's promise, Bhairon's pursuit from Nagrota, Banganga, Charan Paduka, the nine months in the small cave (Ardhkuwari), Bhairon's end and forgiveness, the devotees Shridhar and Dhyanu, and the pindis in the holy cave. The poet signs as “Sevak Sharma” in the last chaupai; nothing more is known about him, and the hymn appears to be a 20th-century composition, printed without an author's name.

Many families recite it in the Navratris of Chaitra and Ashwin, and keeping a regular time can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Questions

Who wrote the Vaishno Devi Chalisa?

The last chaupai is signed “Sevak Sharma”, “your servant Sharma”. Nothing more is known about him. The hymn is printed without an author's name in devotional collections and on devotional sites, and appears to be a 20th-century composition.

What are the three pindis?

The holy cave has no carved image. The Mother is worshipped in three natural rock forms, the pindis, seen as Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati, which is why the opening doha bows to “Kali, Lakshmi, Saraswati”.

Who was Bhairon, and why is he worshipped too?

In the shrine's story Bhairon was a proud yogi who chased the young Vaishnavi up the mountain. At the cave she ended his pursuit, and when he repented she forgave him and blessed him: pilgrims visit the Bhairon Ghati temple after the Mother's darshan, as the chalisa says.

Is Vaishno Devi a form of Durga?

Devotees see her as the one Mother, Adi Shakti, in whom Kali, Lakshmi and Saraswati are united, the same Mother praised as Durga. Her name Vaishnavi also links her with Vishnu.

Text and sources

The text was compared line by line across three independent editions: the Randhir Prakashan print Aarti Chalisa Sangrah (Haridwar, 2000; the 2004 51 Chalisa Sangrah has the same text; both scanned on archive.org), Bhakti Bharat (bhaktibharat.com) and Shubh Panchang (shubhpanchang.com, checked line by line). All three have the same doha, forty chaupais and closing doha in the same order.

Variants: ch. 1 namo namo (printed namoh namoh); ch. 6 कल्कि (also spelt कल्की); ch. 8 karengi poshan (“will nourish”, Shubh Panchang; the print and Bhakti Bharat read shoshan, which makes no sense here and is taken as a misprint); ch. 10 poojan aaven (print and Shubh Panchang; Bhakti Bharat poojat); ch. 32 Bhairon baavan (“the fifty-two Bhairavas”, Shubh Panchang; the others print baravan); ch. 36 Dhyaanu (also Dhyaanoon); ch. 40 Sevak Sharma (print and Bhakti Bharat; Shubh Panchang omits the name). Small spelling differences are not listed. The transliteration and both meanings are our own.
