Listen: Vindhyeshwari Chalisa

A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.

Who Vindhyavasini is, and what the chalisa is

Vindhyavasini (also Vindhyeshwari, “the queen of the Vindhyas”) is the Divine Mother as she dwells in the Vindhya hills of central India. Her best-known temple stands at Vindhyachal, on the Ganga near Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh, with the shrines of Ashtabhuja and Kali close by. The Devi Mahatmya, the scripture recited as the Durga Saptashati, has the goddess promise that she will be born to Yashoda in Nanda's house and then live on the Vindhya mountain; tradition takes this as the baby girl who was exchanged for the newborn Krishna and slipped from Kamsa's hands into the sky.

A chalisa is a hymn of about forty verses in simple Hindi. The Vindhyeshwari Chalisa opens with a doha and has thirty-eight chaupais (couplets), which editions round off as forty; there is no closing doha. The first half praises the Mother through her many names and shrines, from Vaishnavi and Kali to Hinglaj, Sheetala and Mumba Devi, as one goddess. The second half speaks, in the confident language of old devotional poetry, of the help devotees hope for in debt, illness, captivity and the wish for a child, and of customs such as offering a flag and a coconut. These are words of faith, not promises. No poet is named; it is a traditional hymn printed for decades in chalisa collections.

Many families recite it in Navratri, and keeping a regular time can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Questions

Who wrote the Vindhyeshwari Chalisa?

No poet is named in the text and no author is recorded. It is a traditional hymn, printed without an author in chalisa collections and on devotional sites.

Is Vindhyavasini the same as Durga?

Yes, in the sense that devotees see all the goddesses as forms of one Mother; the chalisa itself names her Durga, Lakshmi, Kali, Uma and many more. Vindhyavasini is that Mother as she is worshipped in the Vindhya hills.

Why does it have thirty-eight chaupais, not forty?

Every version we checked, printed and online, has the same thirty-eight. “Chalisa” names the form, a hymn of about forty verses, and some editions simply number the last verse as forty.

Where is the Vindhyavasini temple?

At Vindhyachal, on the bank of the Ganga near Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh. Together with the nearby Ashtabhuja and Kali Khoh temples it forms a well-known circuit of pilgrimage.

Text and sources

The text was compared line by line across four versions: the printed Aarti Chalisa Sangrah (Randhir Prakashan, Haridwar, 2000; scanned on archive.org), sanskritdocuments.org (an older file whose long vowel signs are missing, but whose words can be read), Bhakti Bharat (bhaktibharat.com) and Drik Panchang (drikpanchang.com). All four have the same doha and thirty-eight chaupais in the same order, and none names an author. Where they differ, we follow the reading most of them share.

Variants: ch. 3 nivaarini (Bhakti Bharat nivaaran); ch. 5 deenan ke … dekhyo (Bhakti Bharat deenan ko … dekho); ch. 8, 9, 11, 12, 13 too hi (Bhakti Bharat tumhin); ch. 13 Utraani (Bhakti Bharat Rudraani; the name is obscure), Hemaavati Ambe Nirvaani (also Amb, and निरवाणी/निर्वानी); ch. 18 maatu Sugandha (the 2000 print maat Sankati); ch. 20 to vah karai (Bhakti Bharat jo vah karai); ch. 21 siddhi kariya Ambe (also siddh karahu Ambe, and in the 2000 print siddh kariye ab yah); ch. 23 devi kar (the 2000 print devi ka); ch. 25 man laai (Bhakti Bharat chit laai); ch. 26 bahu sukh (the 2000 print ati sukh); ch. 32 so paath (Bhakti Bharat jo paath); ch. 37 jani (Bhakti Bharat jan); ch. 38 mo par jan jaani (Bhakti Bharat mohi nij jan jaani). In ch. 16, Paatan Mumba Dant Kumaari is read as a list of shrine goddesses (Patan Devi, Mumba Devi, Danta and Kumari); the exact shrines meant are not certain. The verses that tell the reader to recite a hundred or a thousand times, or to feed Brahmins in Navratri, are part of the traditional text and are translated as they stand. The transliteration and both meanings are our own.
