Vishnu Sahasranamam: the thousand names of Vishnu with meaning
The thousand names of Vishnu, taught by Bhishma to Yudhishthira in the Mahabharata: the complete text as it is commonly recited, from the opening prayers to the closing verses, with the meaning of every name in plain words.
What the Vishnu Sahasranamam is
Sahasra means a thousand and nama a name: the Vishnu Sahasranamam is a hymn of a thousand names of Vishnu, packed into 108 short verses. It comes from the Anushasana Parva, the “book of instruction” of the Mahabharata (chapter 149 in the common printed text, 135 in the critical edition). The war is over, and Bhishma, the grand old warrior of the Kuru family, lies on a bed of arrows waiting for the auspicious hour to leave his body. Yudhishthira comes to him with questions about dharma, and at the end asks: who is the one God, the one refuge, and what should a person repeat to be free? Bhishma's answer is these thousand names.
Each name describes a quality or a deed: Vishva (the whole universe), Achyuta (the one who never falls), Govinda, Madhusudana, Narasimha, Rama, Krishna. Some names appear more than once; the commentators, Adi Shankaracharya first among them, read each repetition with a different meaning, so the count stays at a thousand. Our meanings follow these traditional readings in simple words; where a name is read in more than one way, we give the simplest.
The page gives the text the way it is usually recited at home and in temples: short opening prayers, Yudhishthira's questions and Bhishma's answer (purva-bhaga), the nyasa and dhyana that prepare the reciter, the 108 shlokas of names, and the closing verses on the fruit of reciting (uttara-bhaga or phalashruti). Read the meanings once; after that the names begin to speak for themselves.
When it is recited
- Thursdays, the day associated with Vishnu and with Jupiter (Guru).
- Ekadashi, the eleventh lunar day of each fortnight, and the month of Kartik.
- Every morning in many South Indian homes, and in temples and group recitations on festival days.
- In difficult times, when families traditionally turn to it for calm and steadiness.
How to recite it
At a steady pace the whole text takes about 25 to 35 minutes; the 108 shlokas of names alone take roughly 15 to 20.
- Bathe or wash, sit facing a picture of Vishnu, Krishna or Rama, and light a diya if you can.
- Begin with the opening prayers and the purva-bhaga. The nyasa (touching the hands and body with the names) is part of the formal recitation; many people simply read it, or go straight to the dhyana verses.
- Recite the 108 shlokas at an even pace. The English letters use hyphens to show where long compounds break; it is fine to go slowly at first.
- Close with the phalashruti, or at least with the Lord's promise that a single verse recited with love is enough (Uttara-bhaga 24), and the “Shri Rama Rama Rameti” verse.
- If time is short, read one of the four parts of the names each day and finish the thousand over four days.
Opening prayers (traditional preface)
These six verses are not part of the Mahabharata chapter; they are prayers to Vishnu, his attendant Vishvaksena and the sage Vyasa that reciters traditionally say first.

Questions
Do I have to recite all thousand names at once?
No. Many people recite only the 108 shlokas of names, or one part a day. The text itself has Krishna say that one who wishes to praise him with the thousand names has praised him even with a single verse, and Shiva tells Parvati that the name of Rama equals the thousand.
Why do printed versions differ?
The core, Bhishma's answer and the names, is the same everywhere, with a few small differences of reading. The opening prayers, nyasa, dhyana verses and closing verses were added by the reciting tradition and vary by region; some editions count 107 shlokas of names (without the final “Vanamali gadi” verse), others 108. We follow the common South-Indian recitation.
Why do some names appear twice?
Names such as Vishnu, Madhava, Keshava and Vasuprada occur more than once. Commentators read each occurrence with a different sense (Madhava as “consort of Lakshmi” in one place and “lord of knowledge” in another), so every name still counts as one of the thousand.
Is there a rule about who may recite it?
It is recited by men and women, young and old, at home and in temples. Families keep their own customs; the usual advice is simply to be clean, sit calmly and recite with attention. If you wish to perform the full nyasa, learning it once from a teacher or elder helps.
Text and sources
The Sanskrit text is public domain. We follow the common South-Indian recitation as given in “Vishnusahasranama Stotram 1 (Mahabharata)” on sanskritdocuments.org, and checked every verse against the Sanskrit Wikisource text “विष्णुसहस्रनामस्तोत्रम्”. The purva-bhaga, the names and Bhishma's phalashruti were also checked against the Anushasana Parva chapter on Sanskrit Wikisource (chapter 254 in its numbering), and the three Gita verses against the Gita text in the gita/gita dataset. Readings we follow where sources differ: “shashvata-sthanuh” as one name in shloka 13 (Wikisource: “shashvatah sthanuh”); “amritashah” in shloka 87, as in Shankara's commentary (both Wikisource texts: “amritamshah”); “divasprik” in shloka 61; “devatanam” and “viniyujyate” in the purva-bhaga; “prapnuyat prajam” (uttara 4), “prabhum avyayam” (uttara 22; the Mahabharata chapter reads “prabhavapyayam”), “sukhino bhavanti” (closing 4; some print “bhavantu”) and “prakriteh svabhavat” (closing 5; also “prakriti-svabhavat”). The Mahabharata chapter has a few further variants, such as “trikakud-dhama” (shloka 7), “nara-simha” (shloka 3) and “vinayojyah” for “vinayo jayah” (shloka 54). It has no opening prayers, nyasa or dhyana, counts 107 shlokas of names (no “Vanamali gadi” verse) and does not include the Parvati and Shiva verses; these come from the reciting tradition. We leave out the “Narayanam namaskritya” invocation, the alternative anga nyasa and the extra concluding verses that some prints add. The transliteration and meanings are our own; Shankara's readings guided the glosses of the names.
