Shri Ram Raksha Stotram: lyrics with meaning

The “armour of Rama”: a hymn that asks Rama, by his many names, to guard each part of the body, then grows into one of the most loved songs of surrender to him. Tradition says Shiva taught it to the sage Budha Kaushika in a dream.

Listen: Ram Raksha Stotram

A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.

What the Ram Raksha Stotram is

Raksha means protection. Verses 4 to 9 are a kavacha, an armour of names: Raghava guard my head, Kausalya's son my eyes, the builder of the bridge my knees, and Rama my whole body. Each name recalls a moment of the Ramayana, so reciting it is also a way of walking through his story. Verse 15 says Shiva recited it to the sage Budha Kaushika in a dream, and he wrote it down at dawn.

After the armour the hymn turns to pure devotion: Rama and Lakshmana walking ahead on the road, Rama as mother, father, master and friend (verse 30), the feet of Rama remembered by mind, speech and bowed head (verse 29). Verse 38, “Rama Rameti”, is often recited on its own: Shiva tells Parvati that Rama's one name equals the thousand names of Vishnu.

How to recite it

A full recitation takes about twelve to fifteen minutes.

  1. Bathe or wash, sit before a picture of Rama (with Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman if you have one) and light a diya.
  2. Begin with the viniyoga and the dhyana, picturing Rama as the dhyana describes him.
  3. Recite the 38 verses at an even pace. Morning is traditional; many families recite it daily, and especially on Ram Navami and in difficult times.
  4. If time is short, verses 27 to 38 make a complete short recitation.

Ram Raksha Stotram, with meaning

The viniyoga and dhyana come first; verses 4 to 9 are the armour of names; verses 10 to 15 tell its fruit and origin; the rest is praise and surrender.

Questions

Who wrote the Ram Raksha Stotram?

The sage Budha Kaushika, according to the hymn itself (verse 15), who says Shiva taught it to him in a dream. It is an old, public-domain Sanskrit text.

When should it be recited?

Daily in the morning is traditional, and especially on Ram Navami, Tuesdays and Saturdays, before a journey, or at any time of worry.

What is “Shri Rama Rama Rameti”?

Verse 38, which many recite by itself. Shiva tells Parvati that saying Rama's name equals reciting the thousand names of Vishnu. Some say “Shri Rama Rama Rameti” at its start; the printed texts we checked have “Rama Rameti Rameti”.

Text and sources

The Sanskrit text (attributed to Budha Kaushika) is public domain. Every verse was checked against Drik Panchang and Sanskrit Wikisource; the Wikisource text has many typing slips (such as “dhrushau”, “paapanghim”, “jagatatratu”, “brambacharinau”, “duddhimatam”), which we correct to the reading both sources support. Variants: “vame tu janakatmaja” (verse 31), “rama-namabhirakshitam” (verse 13), and “rama-nameti rameti” or “shri rama rama rameti” (verse 38). The transliteration and meanings are our own.
