Listen: Shri Suktam

A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.

What the Shri Suktam is

Shri is Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, beauty and grace; a suktam is a Vedic hymn. The Shri Suktam is found among the khila hymns, the old appendix to the Rigveda, after the fifth book. In it the worshipper asks Jatavedas, the sacred fire, to bring Lakshmi home: golden, moonlike, seated on a lotus, arriving with horses, chariots and elephants. It also asks Alakshmi, her elder sister who stands for hunger, thirst and squalor, to leave.

The prosperity it asks for is broad: gold and cattle, but also fame, truth in speech, a family that holds together and a home that is clean and fragrant. Verse 16 says the fifteen verses are the hymn proper; many traditions add further verses after it.

How to recite it

At a calm pace it takes about seven minutes.

  1. Bathe, sit facing east before a picture of Lakshmi, and light a ghee diya.
  2. Offer a lotus or any fresh flower, and a little kheer or sweet.
  3. Recite the fifteen verses and the phalashruti. Fridays, Diwali night, Sharad Purnima and the start of a new venture are traditional.
  4. If you keep a havan, the hymn says a little ghee may be offered into the fire with each verse; reciting with a lamp is enough for most homes.
  5. Close with the Lakshmi aarti.

Shri Suktam, with meaning

“Jatavedas”, the sacred fire, is asked again and again to bring Lakshmi. Kardama and Chiklita (verses 11 and 12) are named as her sons.

Text and sources

The Sanskrit text is public domain. We follow the recited text given on Sanskrit Wikisource (Shri Suktam, “anyah pathah”) and checked each verse against the Rigveda khila hymns (Khilani 2.6) on Wikisource. Variants in the khila text: “mama vaha” for “ma avaha”, “hastinada-pramodinim” (verse 3), “tam padmanemim” (verse 5), “kirtim vriddhim” (verse 7), “apah sravantu” (verse 12), and verses 13 and 14 with “pakvam pushkarinim” and the Sun and Moon epithets swapped. Many editions add more verses after the phalashruti; we give the fifteen verses the hymn itself names. Vedic accents are left out, as in everyday recitation. The transliteration and meanings are our own.
