What it means for you
Lord of the 11th in the 11th: what is likely
If the lord of your 11th house sits in your 11th house, here is what astrologers expect.
- MoneyFavouredIncome, gains, friends and wishes are well guarded — the lord is at home. This is usually a supportive link.
How strongly: stronger when the lord is in its own or exaltation sign, or aspected by Jupiter; weaker when debilitated, combust or hemmed between malefics.
When it shows most: in the dasha and antardasha of the 11th lord, and when Jupiter or Saturn transits the 11th or 11th house.
Why we say this
- Parashari astrology reads a house through its lord: wherever the lord goes, it carries the house’s matters with it (BPHS ch. 24).
- The 11th house is a house of wealth and gains.
- The lord’s dignity matters most: in its own or exaltation sign it delivers more; debilitated, it delivers after struggle.
These are tendencies from one placement. Your whole chart — the sign, the house lord, aspects and your dashas — decides how they play out. Make your free kundli to see your own.
In short: The 11th lord in its own house strengthens gains, friendships and the fulfilment of wishes. Income and networks are a natural, steady part of life, and the placement supports ambition. Its dignity colours the result; texts also note that the 11th lord can act as a badhaka for movable ascendants in Prashna Marga, a later and technical rule.
What this placement joins
Parashari astrology reads a house through its lord: wherever the lord goes, it carries the house's matters with it. The 11th house is gains, friends, networks and wishes; the 11th is gains, friends, networks and wishes — a upachaya (growth house). Counted from the 11th itself, the lord is in its own house, which strengthens the 11th house's matters.
BPHS devotes a chapter (ch. 24 in Santhanam's numbering) to each house lord in each of the twelve houses, in one or two terse verses apiece. Those verses are written as absolute statements; Sunyra reads them, as most modern Jyotishis do, as tendencies to be weighed with the rest of the chart. The reading above is our own summary of the principle, not a translation.
By rising sign
Which planet is the 11th lord — and how comfortable it is in the 11th house — depends on your ascendant. Dignity is by sign; functional nature follows the general rules of BPHS ch. 34.
| Rising sign | Lord of the 11th | Its sign here | Dignity there | Its other house | Functional nature |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Saturn | Aquarius | moolatrikona; own sign | 10th | difficult |
| Taurus | Jupiter | Pisces | own sign | 8th | difficult |
| Gemini | Mars | Aries | moolatrikona 0°–12°; own sign | 6th | difficult |
| Cancer | Venus | Taurus | own sign | 4th | difficult |
| Leo | Mercury | Gemini | own sign | 2nd | difficult |
| Virgo | Moon | Cancer | own sign | — | difficult |
| Libra | Sun | Leo | moolatrikona; own sign | — | difficult |
| Scorpio | Mercury | Virgo | exalted | 8th | difficult |
| Sagittarius | Venus | Libra | moolatrikona 0°–15°; own sign | 6th | difficult |
| Capricorn | Mars | Scorpio | own sign | 4th | difficult |
| Aquarius | Jupiter | Sagittarius | moolatrikona 0°–10°; own sign | 2nd | difficult |
| Pisces | Saturn | Capricorn | own sign | 12th | difficult |
The lord is especially strong for Aries rising (Saturn in its own sign in Aquarius); Taurus rising (Jupiter in its own sign in Pisces); Gemini rising (Mars in its own sign in Aries); Cancer rising (Venus in its own sign in Taurus); Leo rising (Mercury in its own sign in Gemini); Virgo rising (Moon in its own sign in Cancer); Libra rising (Sun in its own sign in Leo); Scorpio rising (Mercury exalted in Virgo); Sagittarius rising (Venus in its own sign in Libra); Capricorn rising (Mars in its own sign in Scorpio); Aquarius rising (Jupiter in its own sign in Sagittarius); Pisces rising (Saturn in its own sign in Capricorn).
What strengthens or weakens it
- Dignity. Exalted, own-sign or friendly placements make the lord more able to deliver; debility, combustion (closeness to the Sun) or an enemy's sign make it work harder.
- The karaka. Jupiter is the natural significator of the 11th house and of gains.
- Aspects. From the 11th, every planet aspects the 5th house; Jupiter's aspect on the lord or the 11th is the classic protector, and malefic aspects add pressure.
- Divisional charts. Check the lord in the hora (D2) and the dashamsa (D10) for earnings through work; a lord strong in both charts is far more reliable.
- Jaimini factors. Compare with the 2nd lord and the dhana yogas.
Timing
The 11th lord's periods, and those of planets in the 11th, are traditionally the times of gains and of wishes fulfilled; transits of Jupiter over the 11th or its lord are read as supportive. In Prashna Marga's later rule the 11th lord can act as badhaka (obstructor) for movable ascendants — a technical point for horary work.
In Western astrology
Traditional Western astrology uses the same logic under another name: the ruler of the 11th cusp, read as friends, groups and hopes. A ruler of the 11th placed in the 11th links the two houses' affairs, judged by the planet's essential dignity and condition. Modern Western astrologers use the same idea, sometimes with Uranus, Neptune and Pluto as co-rulers of Aquarius, Pisces and Scorpio.
