What it means for you
Lord of the 11th in the 4th: what is likely
If the lord of your 11th house sits in your 4th house, here is what astrologers expect.
- MoneyFavouredIncome, gains, friends and wishes are tied to home, mother, property and inner peace. This is usually a supportive link.
- Family & homeFavouredHome, mother, property and inner peace become a channel for the 11th house’s matters.
How strongly: stronger when the lord is in its own or exaltation sign, or aspected by Jupiter; weaker when debilitated, combust or hemmed between malefics.
When it shows most: in the dasha and antardasha of the 11th lord, and when Jupiter or Saturn transits the 11th or 4th house.
Why we say this
- Parashari astrology reads a house through its lord: wherever the lord goes, it carries the house’s matters with it (BPHS ch. 24).
- The 4th house is an angle — strong and visible.
- The lord’s dignity matters most: in its own or exaltation sign it delivers more; debilitated, it delivers after struggle.
These are tendencies from one placement. Your whole chart — the sign, the house lord, aspects and your dashas — decides how they play out. Make your free kundli to see your own.
In short: The 11th lord in the 4th joins gains with home, property, vehicles and the mother. Income may be invested in property or come through land, family or the home, and comfort grows with gains. The 4th is a kendra; the placement favours steady accumulation of a secure base.
What this placement joins
Parashari astrology reads a house through its lord: wherever the lord goes, it carries the house's matters with it. The 11th house is gains, friends, networks and wishes; the 4th is home, mother, property and inner peace — a kendra (angle). Counted from the 11th itself, the 4th is the 6th from the 11th — a position the tradition treats as weakening the lord's own house unless other factors compensate.
BPHS devotes a chapter (ch. 24 in Santhanam's numbering) to each house lord in each of the twelve houses, in one or two terse verses apiece. Those verses are written as absolute statements; Sunyra reads them, as most modern Jyotishis do, as tendencies to be weighed with the rest of the chart. The reading above is our own summary of the principle, not a translation.
By rising sign
Which planet is the 11th lord — and how comfortable it is in the 4th house — depends on your ascendant. Dignity is by sign; functional nature follows the general rules of BPHS ch. 34.
| Rising sign | Lord of the 11th | Its sign here | Dignity there | Its other house | Functional nature |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Saturn | Cancer | enemy's sign (Moon) | 10th | difficult |
| Taurus | Jupiter | Leo | friend's sign (Sun) | 8th | difficult |
| Gemini | Mars | Virgo | enemy's sign (Mercury) | 6th | difficult |
| Cancer | Venus | Libra | moolatrikona 0°–15°; own sign | 4th | difficult |
| Leo | Mercury | Scorpio | neutral sign (Mars) | 2nd | difficult |
| Virgo | Moon | Sagittarius | neutral sign (Jupiter) | — | difficult |
| Libra | Sun | Capricorn | enemy's sign (Saturn) | — | difficult |
| Scorpio | Mercury | Aquarius | neutral sign (Saturn) | 8th | difficult |
| Sagittarius | Venus | Pisces | exalted | 6th | difficult |
| Capricorn | Mars | Aries | moolatrikona 0°–12°; own sign | 4th | difficult |
| Aquarius | Jupiter | Taurus | enemy's sign (Venus) | 2nd | difficult |
| Pisces | Saturn | Gemini | friend's sign (Mercury) | 12th | difficult |
The lord is especially strong for Cancer rising (Venus in its own sign in Libra); Sagittarius rising (Venus exalted in Pisces); Capricorn rising (Mars in its own sign in Aries).
What strengthens or weakens it
- Dignity. Exalted, own-sign or friendly placements make the lord more able to deliver; debility, combustion (closeness to the Sun) or an enemy's sign make it work harder.
- The karaka. Jupiter is the natural significator of the 11th house and of gains.
- Aspects. From the 4th, every planet aspects the 10th house; Jupiter's aspect on the lord or the 11th is the classic protector, and malefic aspects add pressure.
- Divisional charts. Check the lord in the hora (D2) and the dashamsa (D10) for earnings through work; a lord strong in both charts is far more reliable.
- Jaimini factors. Compare with the 2nd lord and the dhana yogas.
Timing
The 11th lord's periods, and those of planets in the 11th, are traditionally the times of gains and of wishes fulfilled; transits of Jupiter over the 11th or its lord are read as supportive. In Prashna Marga's later rule the 11th lord can act as badhaka (obstructor) for movable ascendants — a technical point for horary work.
In Western astrology
Traditional Western astrology uses the same logic under another name: the ruler of the 11th cusp, read as friends, groups and hopes. A ruler of the 11th placed in the 4th links the two houses' affairs, judged by the planet's essential dignity and condition. Modern Western astrologers use the same idea, sometimes with Uranus, Neptune and Pluto as co-rulers of Aquarius, Pisces and Scorpio.
