In short: Vedic astrology reads wealth from four houses and their lords: the 2nd (accumulated wealth and family resources), the 11th (gains and income), and the 5th and 9th (merit and fortune, the "Lakshmi" houses), always with the ascendant and its lord. Links between these lords form the dhana yogas; Jupiter, the natural significator of wealth, and the hora chart (D2) add detail; the dasha shows when the promise is most active. All of it describes tendencies. None of it is financial advice.
The houses of wealth
| House | What it shows for money |
|---|---|
| 1st | the person and their capacity to make use of what the chart promises |
| 2nd | accumulated wealth, savings, family resources, speech and food |
| 5th | merit (purva punya), intelligence, judgement and speculation |
| 9th | fortune (bhagya), dharma, teachers and the father |
| 10th | work and status, the means of earning |
| 11th | gains, income and the fulfilment of wishes |
The 6th (loans and service), 8th (other people's money, inheritance and sudden change) and 12th (expenditure) show how wealth is used, lost or shared. A chart with a strong 2nd and 11th but a heavy 12th is read as earning well and spending readily.
Dhana yogas
BPHS devotes a chapter (ch. 41 in Santhanam's numbering) to wealth combinations, and Phaladeepika lists many in its yoga chapter (ch. 6). Their common thread is simple: the lords of the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th houses joining, aspecting or exchanging signs with one another, preferably in good dignity and in angles or trines. A few classic forms:
- The 2nd and 11th lords together, or in each other's houses.
- The 5th or 9th lord with the 2nd or 11th lord.
- The lagna lord strong and linked with the 2nd or 11th lord.
- Benefics in the 2nd and 11th, or the 2nd and 11th lords in mutual angles.
Our dhana yoga page gives each form for every ascendant.
Lakshmi yoga
BPHS (ch. 36, v. 27) describes Lakshmi yoga: the 9th lord in an angle in its own, moolatrikona or exaltation sign, with a strong lagna lord. The verse is compact and translators read it in slightly different ways; the yoga page shows the versions side by side.
Other combinations people ask about
- Chandra-Mangala yoga — the Moon and Mars together — is traditionally linked with earning through enterprise.
- Gajakesari yoga — Jupiter in an angle from the Moon — with standing and support.
- Vasumati yoga — benefics in the upachaya houses from the lagna or the Moon — with accumulation over time.
- Daridra yoga (BPHS ch. 42) — the 11th lord in a dusthana and similar links — is the classical counterpart. It is read calmly: texts give cancellations, and it describes effort and care with money, not a fate.
Jupiter, Venus and the hora
Jupiter is the natural significator (karaka) of wealth and of the 2nd and 11th houses; its dignity and its aspect on the wealth houses matter in every reading. Venus is read for comfort and luxuries, and Mercury for trade.
BPHS (ch. 6) assigns the hora (D2), which divides each sign into two halves ruled by the Sun and the Moon, to wealth. Some astrologers find it useful; many treat it as secondary because it has only two divisions.
Timing
The periods of the 2nd and 11th lords, of planets in those houses, and of the lords forming a dhana yoga are the classic times for financial growth; Jupiter's transits over the 2nd, 11th or their lords are read as supportive, Saturn's as consolidation through effort. Because the 2nd is also a maraka house in longevity work, older texts use the same periods for technical calculations — a point for specialists, not a forecast.
In Western astrology
Western astrology reads money from the 2nd house (earnings and possessions), the 8th (shared money, debt, inheritance) and the 10th (career), with Jupiter and Venus as the planets of increase. Timing uses transits and progressions to these points.
A simple way to read your own chart
- Find the lords of your 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th houses and the lagna lord.
- Note whether any of them are together, aspect each other or exchange signs.
- Check their dignity, and Jupiter's.
- Look at what occupies the 12th and the 8th.
- Note whether your current dasha lord is one of these planets.
The house-lord pages go through each placement: the 2nd lord and the 11th lord in every house.
FAQ
Which house is for money in Vedic astrology? The 2nd for accumulated wealth and the 11th for gains, with the 5th and 9th for fortune and the ascendant for the person's capacity to use it.
Does a dhana yoga guarantee wealth? No. A yoga is a tendency that depends on the dignity of the planets, the dasha, the rest of the chart and, above all, on what a person does.
Can a remedy make me rich? Remedies are traditional practices of devotion and discipline. Sunyra does not promise material results from them.
