What it means for you

Lord of the 2nd in the 10th: what is likely

If the lord of your 2nd house sits in your 10th house, here is what astrologers expect.

  • MoneyFavouredSavings, family and speech are tied to career, status and public life. This is usually a supportive link.
  • CareerFavouredCareer, status and public life become a channel for the 2nd house’s matters.

How strongly: stronger when the lord is in its own or exaltation sign, or aspected by Jupiter; weaker when debilitated, combust or hemmed between malefics.

When it shows most: in the dasha and antardasha of the 2nd lord, and when Jupiter or Saturn transits the 2nd or 10th house.

Why we say this
  • Parashari astrology reads a house through its lord: wherever the lord goes, it carries the house’s matters with it (BPHS ch. 24).
  • The 10th house is an angle — strong and visible.
  • The lord’s dignity matters most: in its own or exaltation sign it delivers more; debilitated, it delivers after struggle.

These are tendencies from one placement. Your whole chart — the sign, the house lord, aspects and your dashas — decides how they play out. Make your free kundli to see your own.

In short: With the 2nd lord in the 10th, wealth links with career and status. Earnings come through profession and reputation, and family business or a family name can matter in work. The 10th is a kendra and the 9th from the 2nd, which supports the 2nd's matters. It is a placement for building resources through visible achievement.

What this placement joins

Parashari astrology reads a house through its lord: wherever the lord goes, it carries the house's matters with it. The 2nd house is wealth, family, food and speech; the 10th is career, status and action in the world — a kendra (angle); upachaya (growth house). Counted from the 2nd itself, the 10th is the 9th from the 2nd, a trine from its own house, which supports it.

BPHS devotes a chapter (ch. 24 in Santhanam's numbering) to each house lord in each of the twelve houses, in one or two terse verses apiece. Those verses are written as absolute statements; Sunyra reads them, as most modern Jyotishis do, as tendencies to be weighed with the rest of the chart. The reading above is our own summary of the principle, not a translation.

By rising sign

Which planet is the 2nd lord — and how comfortable it is in the 10th house — depends on your ascendant. Dignity is by sign; functional nature follows the general rules of BPHS ch. 34.

Rising sign Lord of the 2nd Its sign here Dignity there Its other house Functional nature
Aries Venus Capricorn friend's sign (Saturn) 7th neutral
Taurus Mercury Aquarius neutral sign (Saturn) 5th benefic
Gemini Moon Pisces neutral sign (Jupiter) — neutral
Cancer Sun Aries exalted — neutral
Leo Mercury Taurus friend's sign (Venus) 11th difficult
Virgo Venus Gemini friend's sign (Mercury) 9th benefic
Libra Mars Cancer debilitated 7th neutral to good
Scorpio Jupiter Leo friend's sign (Sun) 5th benefic
Sagittarius Saturn Virgo friend's sign (Mercury) 3rd difficult
Capricorn Saturn Libra exalted 1st benefic
Aquarius Jupiter Scorpio friend's sign (Mars) 11th difficult
Pisces Mars Sagittarius friend's sign (Jupiter) 9th benefic

The lord is especially strong for Cancer rising (Sun exalted in Aries); Capricorn rising (Saturn exalted in Libra). It is debilitated for Libra rising (Mars debilitated in Cancer), so look for neecha bhanga (cancellation) conditions before reading it as weak.

What strengthens or weakens it

  • Dignity. Exalted, own-sign or friendly placements make the lord more able to deliver; debility, combustion (closeness to the Sun) or an enemy's sign make it work harder.
  • The karaka. Jupiter is the natural significator of wealth and of the 2nd house.
  • Aspects. From the 10th, every planet aspects the 4th house; Jupiter's aspect on the lord or the 2nd is the classic protector, and malefic aspects add pressure.
  • Divisional charts. Check the lord in the hora (D2), which BPHS uses for wealth; a lord strong in both charts is far more reliable.
  • Jaimini factors. Compare with the 11th lord and the dhana yogas formed with the 1st, 5th and 9th lords.

Timing

The 2nd lord's dasha and antardasha, and those of planets in the 2nd, are traditionally the periods when family and finances come to the fore; Jupiter's transits over the 2nd house or its lord are read as supportive. Because the 2nd is also a maraka house, older texts use the same periods in longevity work — a technical point, not a forecast.

In Western astrology

Traditional Western astrology uses the same logic under another name: the ruler of the 2nd cusp, read as one's money, possessions and what one values. A ruler of the 2nd placed in the 10th links the two houses' affairs, judged by the planet's essential dignity and condition. Modern Western astrologers use the same idea, sometimes with Uranus, Neptune and Pluto as co-rulers of Aquarius, Pisces and Scorpio.

Questions to ask

  • What is the 2nd lord's dignity, and does Jupiter support it?
  • Does the 2nd lord connect with the 11th, 5th, 9th or lagna lord?
  • Which planets occupy or aspect the 2nd house?
  • How strong is the 11th house?
