What it means for you

Lord of the 2nd in the 7th: what is likely

If the lord of your 2nd house sits in your 7th house, here is what astrologers expect.

  • MoneyFavouredSavings, family and speech are tied to marriage, partners and agreements. This is usually a supportive link.
  • Love & marriageFavouredMarriage, partners and agreements become a channel for the 2nd house’s matters.

How strongly: stronger when the lord is in its own or exaltation sign, or aspected by Jupiter; weaker when debilitated, combust or hemmed between malefics.

When it shows most: in the dasha and antardasha of the 2nd lord, and when Jupiter or Saturn transits the 2nd or 7th house.

Why we say this
  • Parashari astrology reads a house through its lord: wherever the lord goes, it carries the house’s matters with it (BPHS ch. 24).
  • The 7th house is an angle — strong and visible.
  • The lord’s dignity matters most: in its own or exaltation sign it delivers more; debilitated, it delivers after struggle.

These are tendencies from one placement. Your whole chart — the sign, the house lord, aspects and your dashas — decides how they play out. Make your free kundli to see your own.

In short: With the 2nd lord in the 7th, wealth links with partnership, trade and the public. Earnings may come through business partnerships, clients or a spouse, and family life and marriage are closely connected. Both the 2nd and 7th are counted as maraka houses in longevity calculations, a technical point; in everyday reading the placement is about shared resources and partnership.

What this placement joins

Parashari astrology reads a house through its lord: wherever the lord goes, it carries the house's matters with it. The 2nd house is wealth, family, food and speech; the 7th is marriage, partners and contracts — a kendra (angle); maraka (technical, longevity calculations). Counted from the 2nd itself, the 7th is the 6th from the 2nd — a position the tradition treats as weakening the lord's own house unless other factors compensate.

BPHS devotes a chapter (ch. 24 in Santhanam's numbering) to each house lord in each of the twelve houses, in one or two terse verses apiece. Those verses are written as absolute statements; Sunyra reads them, as most modern Jyotishis do, as tendencies to be weighed with the rest of the chart. The reading above is our own summary of the principle, not a translation.

By rising sign

Which planet is the 2nd lord — and how comfortable it is in the 7th house — depends on your ascendant. Dignity is by sign; functional nature follows the general rules of BPHS ch. 34.

Rising sign Lord of the 2nd Its sign here Dignity there Its other house Functional nature
Aries Venus Libra moolatrikona 0°–15°; own sign 7th neutral
Taurus Mercury Scorpio neutral sign (Mars) 5th benefic
Gemini Moon Sagittarius neutral sign (Jupiter) — neutral
Cancer Sun Capricorn enemy's sign (Saturn) — neutral
Leo Mercury Aquarius neutral sign (Saturn) 11th difficult
Virgo Venus Pisces exalted 9th benefic
Libra Mars Aries moolatrikona 0°–12°; own sign 7th neutral to good
Scorpio Jupiter Taurus enemy's sign (Venus) 5th benefic
Sagittarius Saturn Gemini friend's sign (Mercury) 3rd difficult
Capricorn Saturn Cancer enemy's sign (Moon) 1st benefic
Aquarius Jupiter Leo friend's sign (Sun) 11th difficult
Pisces Mars Virgo enemy's sign (Mercury) 9th benefic

The lord is especially strong for Aries rising (Venus in its own sign in Libra); Virgo rising (Venus exalted in Pisces); Libra rising (Mars in its own sign in Aries).

What strengthens or weakens it

  • Dignity. Exalted, own-sign or friendly placements make the lord more able to deliver; debility, combustion (closeness to the Sun) or an enemy's sign make it work harder.
  • The karaka. Jupiter is the natural significator of wealth and of the 2nd house.
  • Aspects. From the 7th, every planet aspects the 1st house; Jupiter's aspect on the lord or the 2nd is the classic protector, and malefic aspects add pressure.
  • Divisional charts. Check the lord in the hora (D2), which BPHS uses for wealth; a lord strong in both charts is far more reliable.
  • Jaimini factors. Compare with the 11th lord and the dhana yogas formed with the 1st, 5th and 9th lords.

Timing

The 2nd lord's dasha and antardasha, and those of planets in the 2nd, are traditionally the periods when family and finances come to the fore; Jupiter's transits over the 2nd house or its lord are read as supportive. Because the 2nd is also a maraka house, older texts use the same periods in longevity work — a technical point, not a forecast.

In Western astrology

Traditional Western astrology uses the same logic under another name: the ruler of the 2nd cusp, read as one's money, possessions and what one values. A ruler of the 2nd placed in the 7th links the two houses' affairs, judged by the planet's essential dignity and condition. Modern Western astrologers use the same idea, sometimes with Uranus, Neptune and Pluto as co-rulers of Aquarius, Pisces and Scorpio.

Questions to ask

  • What is the 2nd lord's dignity, and does Jupiter support it?
  • Does the 2nd lord connect with the 11th, 5th, 9th or lagna lord?
  • Which planets occupy or aspect the 2nd house?
  • How strong is the 11th house?
