In short: The Upapada lagna (UL) is the arudha — the projected "image" — of the 12th house. Jaimini astrologers read it for marriage as it appears in the world: the kind of union, how it is seen, and, from the 2nd house counted from the UL, how it is sustained. It is calculated by a simple counting rule with two exceptions, and it is one of the more technical tools in Jyotish, used as a refinement alongside the 7th house, Venus and the navamsa.
What an arudha is
Every house has an ārūḍha pada ("mounted step"), a sign that shows how that house's matters appear outwardly — as opposed to the house itself, which shows their substance. The arudha of the 1st house, the arudha lagna, is read for a person's public image; the arudha of the 10th for reputation in work; and the arudha of the 12th, called the Upapada, for marriage. The scheme is taught in the Jaimini Upadesha Sutras and in BPHS (ch. 29 in Santhanam's numbering).
Why the 12th and not the 7th? The traditional explanation is that the 12th house signifies the bed and what one gives up of oneself, and the 12th from the 1st is also the house that precedes the self; Jaimini commentators read marriage as a sacrifice of independence. It is one of several explanations given, and it is honest to note that the choice puzzles many students at first.
How to calculate it
- Find the 12th house and its lord.
- Count the number of signs from the 12th house to the sign where its lord sits (counting the 12th as one).
- Count the same number of signs onward from the lord's sign. The sign reached is the Upapada.
The two exceptions. If the result falls in the 12th house itself, or in the 7th sign from the 12th (that is, the 6th house), take the 10th sign from it instead.
For Scorpio and Aquarius, which have two lords in many Jaimini readings (Mars and Ketu, Saturn and Rahu), schools differ on which lord to use; a common Jaimini rule takes the stronger of the two. Sunyra's kundli uses the classical lords (Mars for Scorpio, Saturn for Aquarius) and says so in the result.
Example. Taurus ascendant: the 12th house is Aries, ruled by Mars. Suppose Mars is in Cancer. From Aries to Cancer is 4 signs (Aries 1, Taurus 2, Gemini 3, Cancer 4). Count 4 more from Cancer: Cancer 1, Leo 2, Virgo 3, Libra 4. The Upapada is Libra, the 6th house for a Taurus ascendant. Libra is the 7th sign from Aries, the 12th house, so the exception applies: take the 10th sign from Libra, which is Cancer. The UL is Cancer, the 3rd house.

How it is read
- The sign of the UL and its lord describe the character of marriage as it is lived and seen. Benefic signs and lords in good dignity are read as supportive.
- Planets in or aspecting the UL (by Jaimini's sign aspects) colour it: benefics are welcome; Saturn tends towards seriousness or delay; Rahu towards the unconventional.
- The 2nd from the UL is read for the continuity and sustenance of the marriage. Heavy malefic pressure on it, without any supportive influence, is one of the factors some astrologers read for strain; benefic influence for steadiness.
- The 7th from the UL is read in some schools for the partner's family or for a second union.
As with every tool on this site, one indicator is weighed with the others. A difficult UL in a chart with a strong 7th lord and a well-placed Venus is read as a detail.
Upapada in timing
In Jaimini's chara dasha, periods of the sign of the UL, of the sign holding its lord, and of signs aspecting it are examined for marriage. In Vimshottari practice, many astrologers add the UL's lord to the list of planets whose periods may activate relationships (see marriage timing).
Sensitivity to birth time
The UL depends on the ascendant (which decides which sign is the 12th) and on one planet's sign. It changes only when the ascendant changes sign or the 12th lord changes sign, so it is far less sensitive to birth time than the navamsa ascendant. A birth time near a sign boundary of the ascendant, however, can change it completely.
FAQ
Is the Upapada more important than the 7th house? No. The 7th house shows the substance of partnership; the UL shows how it appears and is sustained. Read them together.
What does a malefic in the 2nd from the Upapada mean? It is read by some astrologers as a strain on the continuity of marriage. It is never read alone, and it does not predict separation.
Does Western astrology use the Upapada? No. Arudhas belong to the Jaimini tradition. Western astrology has the Lots (such as the Lot of Marriage), which are a different calculation.
