In short: The 7th house is the house of the other: marriage and committed partnership, business partners, contracts, the public we deal with, and open rivals. It lies opposite the 1st, on the western horizon where the Sun sets. Vedic astrology calls it kalatra bhava, the house of the spouse, and yuvati or jaya. It describes what we seek in another person and what partnership teaches us about ourselves.

What the seventh house means
In Vedic astrology
BPHS ch. 11 gives the 7th house the spouse, marriage, sexual union, trade, travel, and dealings with others, and ch. 18 is devoted to judging it. It is a kendra, an angle, so planets here are strong and visible, and Saturn has directional strength here. Venus is its significator. With the 2nd, it is one of the two maraka houses used in classical longevity calculations — a technical term only, which Sunyra does not use for prediction.
For marriage, Vedic astrology reads the 7th house together with its lord, Venus (and, in traditional practice for women's charts, Jupiter), the D9 (navamsa) divisional chart, and the running dashas. In matching, the 7th houses of both charts and Mars's placement (Mangal dosha) are compared, along with the Moon-based Ashtakoota.
In Western astrology
Hellenistic astrologers called the 7th place the "Setting", where the Sun goes down, and associated it with marriage, partnership and the end of life (Firmicus Maternus, Mathesis II.19). Lilly gives it marriage, "public enemies", lawsuits, contracts and "thieves and thefts" in horary questions — anyone we face directly. Modern Western astrology reads the Descendant as the qualities we look for — and sometimes project — in partners, and the 7th as committed relationships of every kind.
The lord of the seventh house
The 7th lord shows the nature of partnership and where partners are met. In the 1st it brings partnership close to identity; in the 10th, partners met through work or a partner in public life; in the 9th, a partner from afar or connected with learning and faith; in the 12th, a partner from abroad or a private relationship; in the 5th, love leading to marriage. BPHS ch. 24 describes the 7th lord in each house.
Planets in the seventh house
- Sun — a proud or dignified partner; partnerships where leadership must be shared.
- Moon — a caring, responsive partner; emotional need for companionship.
- Mars — passion and energy in partnership; one of the Mangal dosha placements, with many cancellations.
- Mercury — a youthful, communicative partner; partnership in trade.
- Jupiter — a wise, principled partner; Jupiter here is classically a protective placement for marriage.
- Venus — the natural significator; affection, beauty and harmony, though some texts note that a karaka in its own house can intensify desire.
- Saturn — directional strength; a serious, loyal, often older partner, or marriage that comes later and lasts.
- Rahu — an unconventional or foreign partner; intense attraction.
- Ketu — detachment or a spiritual bond in partnership.
- Uranus, Neptune, Pluto (Western) — respectively a need for freedom in partnership; idealised, soulful love; intense, transformative relationships.
Marriage, carefully
The 7th house is where people most often bring their hopes and fears to an astrologer. Sunyra's approach is simple: the chart describes patterns and timing tendencies, not destiny. No single placement — Mars in the 7th, Saturn aspecting Venus, a "dosha" — decides whether a marriage happens or lasts. Classical texts themselves list cancellations for nearly every difficult combination, and the choices two people make matter more than any chart.
Transits through the seventh house
Phaladeepika (ch. 26) counts the 7th house from the natal Moon as favourable for the Moon and Jupiter in transit. Jupiter's transit of the 7th from the Moon or the lagna is one of the classical indicators astrologers watch for the timing of marriage, together with the dasha. Saturn's transit over the 7th is read as a time of seriousness and commitment in partnership. In Western practice, outer planets crossing the Descendant mark changes in relationships.
A worked example
Suppose a chart has Aries rising. The 7th house is Libra, ruled by Venus. If Venus sits in the 7th, in its own sign and in an angle, it forms Malavya yoga, one of the Pancha Mahapurusha yogas: a classical picture of a charming, artistic person for whom partnership is central. If Mars, the lagna lord, aspects the 7th from the 1st, the axis of self and other is strongly linked — passion, and a need to balance assertion with cooperation.
The sign on the seventh house
The sign on the 7th, always opposite the rising sign, describes the qualities a person seeks in partners — often the qualities they are developing in themselves. Fire signs here attract energetic, independent partners; earth signs dependable, practical ones; air signs sociable, communicative ones; water signs emotionally deep, caring ones.
House from house
The 7th is the 1st from the 7th — the partner's own self — so the whole chart can be "rotated" to read the partner's life from the 7th house. The 7th is also the 4th from the 4th, linking domestic happiness with partnership, and the 10th from the 10th, linking it with career.
When the seventh house is active
The 7th house comes forward in the dasha or antardasha of its lord, of planets placed in it, and of Venus. Such periods are traditionally associated with marriage, new partnerships, contracts and dealings with the public, as well as with tests of existing relationships.
A Lal Kitab note
In Lal Kitab, whose houses are fixed from Aries, the 7th is the permanent house of Venus and is also strongly associated with Mercury. It is read for the spouse, the household's prosperity and partnerships in business. Lal Kitab's remedies for a troubled 7th house depend on the exact planets placed there and belong to its own system.
Reading the seventh from the Moon and Venus
Vedic astrologers rarely judge partnership from the lagna alone. They also count the 7th house from the Moon (the emotional partner) and look at the houses from Venus, the significator. When the 7th from the lagna, the 7th from the Moon and Venus all tell a similar story, the theme is considered reliable; when they differ, the astrologer describes the different layers of what a person seeks and experiences in relationships.
In career
The 7th house supports careers in partnership: business with partners, trade and commerce, law and mediation, diplomacy, counselling, public relations and any work with clients. As the 10th from the 10th, it also shows the "career of the career" — the public impact of one's work.
Health as wellbeing
The 7th house is linked with the lower abdomen and, in the cosmic person, the reproductive and urinary organs. As wellbeing, it reflects the health of our closest relationships, which research and tradition alike suggest affects everything else. These are traditional associations, not medical advice.
Questions to ask of the seventh house
Which sign is on the 7th, and where is its lord? How strong is Venus (and, in traditional practice, Jupiter)? Which planets occupy or aspect the 7th? What does the D9 chart show? Is there Mangal dosha, and is it cancelled? Which dasha is running, and is Jupiter transiting a relevant house?
House systems
In whole-sign houses the 7th is the sign opposite the rising sign; in quadrant systems the 7th cusp is the Descendant degree itself. Sunyra shows both.
Vedic and Western views compared
Both traditions read the 7th as marriage, partners, contracts and open enemies. Vedic astrology adds the navamsa, Mangal dosha and the Moon-based matching system, and uses the 7th in longevity techniques; modern Western astrology emphasises the psychology of projection — what we seek in others.
FAQ
Does the 7th house show when I will marry? It is one part of the picture, with the 7th lord, Venus, the D9, the dasha and Jupiter's transit. No single factor gives a date.
Is Mars in the 7th bad for marriage? It is one of the Mangal dosha placements, with many classical cancellations. It describes passion and energy, not a verdict.
Which planet has directional strength in the 7th? Saturn.
What is the Descendant? The point opposite the ascendant, where the western horizon meets the ecliptic — the 7th cusp in quadrant systems.
Does the 7th house show business partners? Yes, in both traditions.
