Listen: Radha Chalisa

A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.

Who Radha is, and what the chalisa is

Radha is the beloved of Krishna and, for many devotees, the fullest picture of love for God. She is the daughter of Vrishabhanu and Kirti of Barsana, near Vrindavan, and the songs of Braj tell of her days with Krishna by the Yamuna, in the groves and in the circle dance of the raas. In the devotional traditions of Vrindavan she is more than a companion: she is Krishna's own joy given a form, and the two are spoken of as one being in two bodies, Radha-Krishna.

A chalisa is a hymn of about forty verses (chalis means forty). The Radha Chalisa is in Braj Bhasha, the old Hindi of the Vrindavan region, with two opening dohas, forty chaupais (couplets) and a closing doha. It praises Radha's beauty and gentleness, her love with Krishna and her place in Goloka, his eternal home, and it closes with the Vrindavan faith that Krishna is reached through Radha's name. No poet is named; it is a traditional hymn printed in the common chalisa collections.

Many families recite it on Radhashtami, her birthday in the month of Bhadrapada, and keeping a regular day can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Questions

Who wrote the Radha Chalisa?

No poet is named in any edition we checked. It is a traditional hymn in Braj Bhasha, printed without an author in the common chalisa collections and on devotional sites.

Why does the chalisa say Krishna cannot be reached without Radha?

It voices a central belief of the Vrindavan traditions: Radha is the heart of Krishna's love, so devotion to Krishna is complete only with her. That is why people in Braj greet each other with “Radhe Radhe”.

What is Goloka?

In the Brahmavaivarta and other Puranas, Goloka is Krishna's eternal realm, beyond the created worlds, where Radha and Krishna are always together. The chalisa calls Radha the one who dwells in Goloka.

Is the Radha Chalisa linked to any planet?

Not directly. In Jyotish, love and devotion in relationships are traditionally read from Venus and the seventh house, which is why Radha-Krishna are often mentioned alongside them. The chalisa itself is a hymn of devotion, not a remedy or a guarantee of any result.

Text and sources

The text was compared line by line across three independent versions: the Randhir Prakashan collection 51 Chalisa Sangrah (Haridwar, 2004, scanned on archive.org), Bhakti Bharat (bhaktibharat.com; the Aaj Tak text is the same, so it is not counted separately) and Shubh Panchang (shubhpanchang.com). All three have the same two dohas, forty chaupais and closing doha in the same order, and none names a poet. Where they differ we follow the reading that two of the three share.

Variants: doha 1 vrindaavipin (the print has vrindaavanvipin, one syllable too many) and pranavaun (print and Shubh Panchang; Bhakti Bharat praanaavau); doha 2 jaisau taisau (Bhakti Bharat jaiso taiso); ch. 1 Vrishabhaan kunvari (Shubh Panchang Vrishabhaanu, Bhakti Bharat kunvari as कुँवरी); ch. 8–9, which the scanned print runs together, follow the two online texts; ch. 12 jaavak yut yug (print yug yug); ch. 18 muni and paain (print suni, paayein); ch. 24 darsh karan (print and Shubh Panchang; Bhakti Bharat darshan); ch. 30 tab as printed everywhere, read as tav (“your”); ch. 32 saadar (print Saarad, “Sharada sings”); ch. 40 hai sharan tihaari (print he … tihaarau); closing doha Ghanshyaam (print and Shubh Panchang; Bhakti Bharat misprints Dhanshyaam). Small spelling differences are not listed. The transliteration and both meanings are our own.
