In short: Rohini is the fourth nakshatra, spanning 10° to 23°20′ of sidereal Taurus. Its deity is Prajapati, the creator, and its ruling planet is the Moon. Its name means "the red one" or "the growing one", and its symbol is an ox-cart. Rohini is the energy of fertile ground: beauty, growth, abundance, charm and the pleasure of making things flourish. It was the Moon's favourite among his twenty-seven wives, and many astrologers count it the Moon's happiest home.

The story: the Moon's beloved
The Puranas tell that the Moon married the twenty-seven daughters of Daksha, the nakshatras, and promised to treat them equally. But Rohini was the most beautiful and the most delightful, and the Moon spent his nights with her. The other sisters complained to their father, Daksha warned the Moon, and when he did not change, Daksha cursed him to waste away. The curse could only be softened, not undone, and so the Moon waxes and wanes (Mahabharata, Shalya Parva). It is a story about the danger of favouritism — and also a compliment to Rohini, whose charm was strong enough to move the Moon.
Rohini's deity is Prajapati, "lord of creatures", the creator god later identified with Brahma. The theme is generation: Rohini is where life multiplies and things take root.
It is also a sacred birth star. The Bhagavata Purana (10.3) describes the night of Krishna's birth: the whole sky was serene and auspicious, and the nakshatra ruled by Brahma — Rohini — had risen. Krishna's birthday, Janmashtami, is still often reckoned with Rohini in mind, and Balarama's mother, a wife of Vasudeva, was also named Rohini.
In the sky
Rohini's chief star is Aldebaran, the bright orange eye of the Bull, set among the V-shaped cluster of the Hyades. Tradition sees the V as a cart (shakata), and Rohini's symbol is an ox-cart or chariot. Classical omen literature, including Varahamihira's Brihat Samhita, treats a planet passing through "Rohini's cart" as a grave sign for the world — an image of the cart, the means of carrying the harvest, being broken. In Arabic astronomy Aldebaran — "the follower", because it follows the Pleiades across the sky — gave its name to the fourth lunar mansion, al-Dabaran.
The nature of Rohini
Muhurta texts class Rohini as dhruva, fixed — the best category for anything meant to last: laying foundations, planting, moving into a house, marriage and coronations. Its temperament is manushya, human. The Moon rules it and it lies in Venus's sign, so it combines the Moon's receptiveness with Venus's beauty and pleasure, in the sign where the Moon is exalted.
Rohini's core qualities are beauty, charm, creativity, fertility, comfort and growth. It has a strong aesthetic sense and an attraction to fine things. It nourishes and is nourished; it wants roots, a home, a garden that flourishes. It is also, like its story, aware of desire and of being desired.
Strengths
- Charm and beauty. Rohini attracts people and makes them feel at ease.
- Creativity. It is fertile in art, ideas and projects.
- Steadiness. Fixed in nature, it builds things that last.
- Nurturing. It makes places and people grow.
Challenges
- Attachment. Like the Moon's love for Rohini, its attachments can be strong and possessive.
- Comfort-seeking. It may prefer pleasure and ease to effort.
- Envy or being envied. The story's sisters remind Rohini that admiration can draw resentment, and that fairness matters.
Rohini's growth often lies in generosity: sharing its abundance freely, and holding what it loves lightly.
The Moon in Rohini
The Moon in Rohini is in its own nakshatra and in its exaltation sign. It is traditionally one of the most comfortable Moon placements: emotionally steady, warm, sensuous, artistic and loving. The person often has a gift for making others feel cared for and enjoys beauty, food, music and nature. The same placement can make change and loss especially hard, because Rohini loves to keep what it has.
A technical note: the Moon's exact exaltation point, 3° Taurus, lies in Krittika, not Rohini. Rohini falls in the part of Taurus that BPHS treats as the Moon's moolatrikona, its "root-trine" zone of strength — though, as our Moon article explains, texts draw the moolatrikona range differently. Either way, the Moon is strongly placed here.
Living with Rohini
People with a strong Rohini often find that their best life is a cultivated one: a home they have made beautiful, a craft they have refined over years, a circle of people they have fed and looked after. The ox-cart is a good image — slow, loaded with harvest, moving steadily toward home. Rohini does not need to rush. Its gifts compound, and they are most visible over time.
The ascendant and other planets in Rohini
A Rohini ascendant tends to give attractive features, a gentle manner and a magnetic presence. Venus in Rohini, in its own sign, is artistic and pleasure-loving. Jupiter here gives abundance and generosity. Mars here is patient but persistent in pursuit. The Sun in Rohini (roughly the last week of May into early June) gives a warm, steady confidence.
Pada by pada
| Pada | Span | Sign | Navamsa (D9) | Syllable |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 10° Taurus – 13°20′ Taurus | Taurus | Aries | O |
| 2 | 13°20′ Taurus – 16°40′ Taurus | Taurus | Taurus | Va |
| 3 | 16°40′ Taurus – 20° Taurus | Taurus | Gemini | Vi |
| 4 | 20° Taurus – 23°20′ Taurus | Taurus | Cancer | Vu |
- Pada 1 (Aries navamsa). Energetic and ambitious; Rohini's creativity starts things and seeks results.
- Pada 2 (Taurus navamsa). The most Rohini of the padas — vargottama, Taurus in both D1 and D9 — sensual, stable, wealth-minded and artistic.
- Pada 3 (Gemini navamsa). Curious and communicative; charm moves into words, trade and learning.
- Pada 4 (Cancer navamsa). Nurturing and emotional, deeply attached to home and family.
In relationships and matching
Rohini is a manushya gana nakshatra, with the serpent as its yoni and Antya (Kapha) as its nadi. Its yoni pairs most naturally with Mrigashira, the other serpent nakshatra; the mongoose (Uttara Ashadha) is the serpent's traditional enemy.
In everyday terms, Rohini partners are affectionate, sensual, loyal and devoted to home. They need warmth, beauty and security in love, and they flourish with a partner who appreciates them and does not make them compete for attention.
Career and work
Rohini favours creative and growth-oriented fields: the arts, music, fashion, beauty and design; agriculture, gardening and food; hospitality; real estate and interiors; finance and trade; and work with children or care. It enjoys work that produces something beautiful or nourishing.
Health as wellbeing
Rohini lies in Taurus, traditionally linked with the face, throat and senses, and its Moon rulership links it with the body's fluids and comfort. As wellbeing, Rohini benefits from good food in good measure, movement to balance a love of ease, and time in nature. These are traditional associations, not medical advice.
The dasha connection
A person born with the Moon in Rohini begins life in the Moon mahadasha, ten years long. The balance remaining at birth depends on how far the Moon has travelled through the nakshatra. Mars's seven-year dasha follows, then Rahu's eighteen (BPHS ch. 46).
Muhurta: choosing a time
Rohini is one of the four dhruva (fixed) nakshatras, with Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha and Uttara Bhadrapada. Traditional practice favours them for permanent undertakings: foundations, planting, house-warming, marriage and installations of images. Tithi, weekday and other factors are weighed together.
A note for Western readers
Western astrology uses Aldebaran as a fixed star, at about 10° tropical Gemini. A tradition popularised in modern times counts it among four "royal stars" of ancient Persia, watchers of the sky's quarters; its historical basis is uncertain. Western astrologers traditionally associate Aldebaran with honour, courage and integrity.
