In short: Mars in Aquarius places the planet of energy in Saturn's airy sign. It tends to give energy for causes, independence, innovation and teamwork, with a contrary streak. The rising sign decides which house Aquarius becomes, and so where these qualities are lived.

Dignity

Mars is in a neutral sign, ruled by Saturn. By BPHS natural relationships Mars counts Saturn as neutral, while Saturn counts Mars as an enemy — a one-sided relationship. In practice it negotiates with Saturn, whose placement shows where its energy is finally spent.

The Vedic view

Aquarius is ruled by Saturn, neutral to Mars in BPHS. Classical descriptions of Mars in Aquarius mix independence and enterprise with unconventional or difficult conduct. Mars spans the second half of Dhanishta (its own nakshatra), Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada's first padas.

Character and temperament

The planet brings energy, courage, land, siblings and the drive to act; the sign makes it independent, humane and unconventional. Being fixed, the sign sticks with a project and builds slowly to last.

Strengths: innovation, independence and energy for collective causes. Its deeper gift is the nerve to begin what others only talk about.

Challenges: contrariness, detachment and erratic effort. The shadow to watch is temper and haste.

Love and marriage

In relationships it is independent and friendly. Mars in any sign brings passion and protectiveness, and needs a partner who can take directness; in Aquarius that becomes friendship-based love that needs freedom. Being an air sign, Aquarius needs conversation, friendship and room to breathe. Mars's sign is part of the Mangal dosha discussion: the dosha depends on its house, and is always cross-checked from the Moon and Venus and against the partner's chart. The placement speaks most directly about marriage for Leo rising, where Aquarius is the 7th house and Mars rules the 4th and 9th. For Libra rising it falls in the 5th, the house of romance. As a rule, Mars falls quickly and fights hard for the people it loves; cooling-off time keeps quarrels from escalating.

Career and money

At work it favours technology, engineering, activism and science. Mars suits engineering, defence, surgery, sport, property, police and any work with fire or tools. The fixed sign gives a working style that sticks with a project and builds slowly to last. Career is front and centre for Taurus rising, where Aquarius is the 10th house and Mars sits there with directional strength (dig bala) as lord of the 7th and 12th. Across the twelve ascendants it scores highest for Leo rising and Aries rising and is most demanding for Aquarius rising and Capricorn rising. Financially, money is earned through effort, risk and property, and spent just as quickly. The 2nd and 11th houses, the wealth pair, are Aquarius for Capricorn rising and Aries rising respectively.

Health and wellbeing

For wellbeing, tradition favours varied activity. The planet's areas are blood, muscles, inflammation, injuries and fevers; the sign's are the calves, ankles and circulation. A helpful habit: hard physical exercise and counting to ten before replying in anger. This is traditional astrology, not medical advice.

The dispositor

Saturn rules Aquarius, so Saturn is Mars's dispositor. Wherever Saturn sits by house and sign is where Mars's energy in Aquarius is finally spent; a strong Saturn supports it, a weak one asks more of it. If Saturn is at the same time in a sign Mars rules (Aries and Scorpio), the two are in parivartana, an exchange of signs, a strong mutual link.

By nakshatra

The degree decides the nakshatra, and each brings its own lord into Mars's story:

  • 0°–6°40′: Mars in Dhanishta, Mars's own nakshatra, so the placement is concentrated; deity the eight Vasus, gods of the elements; in love it is generous and rhythmic but can stay busy rather than intimate.

  • 6°40′–20°: Mars in Shatabhisha, ruled by Rahu; deity Varuna, lord of the waters and of cosmic order; for work it points to healing, medicine, research, technology, astronomy and water.

  • 20°–30°: Mars in Purva Bhadrapada, ruled by Jupiter, a friend to Mars; deity Aja Ekapada, the one-footed goat; its gift is spiritual fire and its shadow cynicism and extremes.

By rising sign

Whole-sign houses make the ascendant decisive: here is Mars in Aquarius for each rising sign, with a link to the detailed page.

Between 13°20′ and 16°40′ Aquarius, Mars is vargottama — in Aquarius in both the birth chart and the navamsa (D9) — which classical texts treat as a mark of consistency and strength. A Western (tropical) chart will often show this Mars in Pisces, since the two zodiacs are about 24° apart.

Mars transiting Aquarius

Time in the sign: usually six to seven weeks in a sign, and much longer when it turns retrograde. Transits are judged from the natal Moon: following Phaladeepika ch. 26, this transit is traditionally favourable for Moon signs Sagittarius, Virgo and Aries, before vedha and ashtakavarga refine it.

The Western view

In Western astrology Mars in Aquarius is peregrine. Modern astrologers describe it as rebellious and reform-minded.
