In short: Mercury in Scorpio places the planet of intellect in Mars's watery sign. It tends to give a probing, secretive, research-minded and strategic intelligence, with sharp speech. Which life area it colours depends on the ascendant: the table further down shows each one.

Dignity
Mercury is in a neutral sign, ruled by Mars. By BPHS natural relationships Mercury counts Mars as neutral, while Mars counts Mercury as an enemy — a one-sided relationship. The host is neither fully welcoming nor hostile, and Mars's own strength becomes central, since it is the dispositor. Mercury is never more than about 28° from the Sun, so the Sun is in Scorpio or a neighbouring sign; together they form Budha-Aditya yoga, and close conjunction means combustion.
The Vedic view
Scorpio is ruled by Mars, neutral to Mercury in BPHS. Classical descriptions of Mercury in Scorpio mix intelligence and investigative ability with harshness or secrecy. Mercury spans Vishakha's last pada, Anuradha and Jyeshtha (its own nakshatra); in Jyeshtha it is shrewd and strategic. Because Mercury is never more than about 28° from the Sun, it is always in the Sun's sign or a neighbouring one, and is often combust; that closeness is read alongside its sign.
Character and temperament
Put Mercury — intellect, speech, trade, writing, skills and youthfulness — into a sign that is intense, private and transforming, and the result leans water. Scorpio's fixed quality means the placement sticks with a project and builds slowly to last.
Strengths: research, investigation, psychological insight and strategy. Its deeper gift is quick understanding and the ability to explain.
Challenges: suspicion, secrecy and a cutting tongue. Left unchecked, it slides toward overthinking and talking around a decision.
Love and marriage
In relationships it is deep conversations; trust matters. Generally Mercury needs conversation, wit and a partner who is also a friend. Here the style is deep, all-or-nothing love. Being a water sign, Scorpio needs emotional depth, reassurance and loyalty. Mercury rules conversation and friendship, so its sign shows how the person flirts, argues and makes up. Scorpio becomes the 7th house, marriage itself, for Taurus rising: there Mercury also rules the 2nd and 5th and is benefic (trine lord). Romance is in focus for Cancer rising, where Scorpio is the 5th. More broadly, Mercury makes love conversational and youthful: friendship, humour and shared interests keep the bond alive.
Career and money
At work it favours research, investigation, psychology and medicine. In general Mercury suits commerce, accounts, writing, teaching, software, media and negotiation. The fixed sign gives a working style that sticks with a project and builds slowly to last. Career is front and centre for Aquarius rising, where Scorpio is the 10th house and Mercury sits there as lord of the 5th and 8th. By lordship and house it is most helpful to Taurus rising and Virgo rising; Cancer rising and Leo rising get its harder side. Where money is concerned, income comes through skill, trade and more than one source. It falls in the money houses for Libra rising (2nd) and Capricorn rising (11th).
Health and wellbeing
For wellbeing, tradition favours release from intense thinking. Traditionally Mercury governs nerves, skin, lungs and the restless mind and Scorpio governs the reproductive and eliminative organs. A helpful habit: writing a short daily plan and reading something substantial. This is traditional astrology, not medical advice.
The dispositor
Mars rules Scorpio, so Mars is Mercury's dispositor. In Parashari practice the results pass through Mars: its house shows where they land, its dignity how fully. If Mars is at the same time in a sign Mercury rules (Gemini and Virgo), the two are in parivartana, an exchange of signs, a strong mutual link.
By nakshatra
Within Scorpio, Mercury falls in one of these nakshatras, whose lord becomes a second dispositor and shares in its periods:
0°–3°20′: Mercury in Vishakha, ruled by Jupiter, neutral to Mercury; deity Indra and Agni together (Indragni); in love it pursues love with single-minded intensity and can be jealous.
3°20′–16°40′: Mercury in Anuradha, ruled by Saturn, neutral to Mercury; deity Mitra, god of friendship and agreements; for work it points to organisations, diplomacy, foreign work, research and friendship-based work.
16°40′–30°: Mercury in Jyeshtha, Mercury's own nakshatra, so the placement is concentrated; deity Indra, king of the gods; its gift is protective seniority and its shadow arrogance and secrecy.

Navamsa and the two zodiacs
If Mercury is between 13°20′ and 16°40′ Scorpio, it is vargottama (same sign in the navamsa), a classical sign of steadiness. A Western (tropical) chart will often show this Mercury in Sagittarius, since the two zodiacs are about 24° apart.
Mercury transiting Scorpio
Time in the sign: from about two to eight weeks in a sign, depending on retrograde periods. Counted from the natal Moon (Phaladeepika ch. 26), the classically favourable Moon signs for this transit are Libra, Leo, Gemini, Aries, Aquarius and Capricorn; vedha and ashtakavarga then refine the picture.
The Western view
In Western astrology Mercury in Scorpio is peregrine. Modern astrologers describe it as penetrating and investigative.
