Chalisa · Saraswati
Shri Saraswati Chalisa: lyrics with meaning
A hymn to Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, speech, music and the arts. Below is the full text in Hindi, the same in English letters, and a plain meaning for every verse.
Listen: Saraswati Chalisa
A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.
Who Saraswati is, and what the chalisa is
Saraswati is the goddess of knowledge, speech, music and the arts. In the Rigveda she is first a great river and then the goddess of inspired speech (Vak); in later tradition she is the consort of Brahma, the creator, and one of the three great goddesses beside Lakshmi and Parvati. She is pictured dressed in white, seated on a white lotus or riding a swan, holding the veena, a book and a string of beads. Students, musicians, writers and teachers have looked to her for generations, and many children begin their first letters in her name.
A chalisa is a hymn of about forty verses (chalis means forty) in simple old Hindi. The Saraswati Chalisa opens with two dohas, has thirty-nine chaupais (couplets) and closes with two dohas. It praises her form, recalls how her grace made poets of Valmiki and Kalidasa and carried Tulsidas and Surdas, and then sees her as the one great Mother who defeated Madhu and Kaitabha, Raktabija and Shumbha and Nishumbha, before ending with a personal prayer for strength, understanding and learning.
The poet names himself three times: Ramsagar, in the second doha, the last chaupai and the last doha. Nothing more is known about him or his date. The chalisa is an old devotional text, sung in homes and schools across North India, and it belongs to everyone. Many families recite it at Vasant Panchami, Saraswati's festival, and keeping a regular time can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Questions
Who wrote the Saraswati Chalisa?
The poet signs as Ramsagar, in the second doha, the last chaupai and the last doha. Nothing else is known about him; the chalisa has come down through small printed booklets and singing.
Why does a hymn to Saraswati tell the stories of Durga?
In the Devi tradition all the goddesses are forms of one Mother. The Devi Mahatmya, the source of these stories, honours her in three forms, Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati, and the chalisa follows that view: the goddess of learning is also the one who defeats Madhu and Kaitabha, Raktabija and Shumbha.
Why is Saraswati shown with a swan and a veena?
The swan (hamsa) is said to separate milk from water, an image of the discernment that knowledge brings; the veena stands for music and the harmony of the arts. The book in her hand is learning, and the string of beads is steady practice.
Is Saraswati connected with any planet in Jyotish?
In Jyotish, Saraswati is traditionally associated with Mercury (Budh), the planet of speech, learning and the intellect, and sometimes with Jupiter. The chalisa itself is a hymn of devotion, not a remedy or a guarantee of any result.
Text and sources
The text was compared line by line across four published versions in two families: Bharat Discovery (bharatdiscovery.org) and Bhakti Bharat (bhaktibharat.com), whose Hindi text InstaAstro (instaastro.com) repeats; and Hindupedia (hindupedia.com) and the Hindu Blog (hindu-blog.com), with the English-letter text on InstaAstro, which follow a slightly different reading. A printed copy appears in the Randhir Prakashan 51 Chalisa Sangrah (Haridwar), but its scan was too poor to read line by line. Where the families differ we follow the reading most sources share, and the one that makes better sense and metre; no poet other than Ramsagar is named, and no source claims authorship.
Variants (our reading first): doha 2 Ramsagar ke paap ko (Bharat Discovery, Bhakti Bharat, Hindu Blog: dushtajanon ke paap ko); ch. 4–5 jabahi … tabahi maatu le nij avtaara, paap heen karti mahi taara (others: tab hi … tab hi maatu ka nij avtaari, paap heen karti mahtaari); ch. 7 Raamaayan (others: Ramcharit); ch. 12 chit sundar maata (others drop sundar); ch. 13 bahu bhaanti ghaneri (others: bhaanti bahu teri); ch. 15 Vishnu te (others: se); ch. 17 keenh … bhai (Hindu Blog and InstaAstro: bhai … kari); ch. 19 chhan mahun sanhaareu tehi (others: kshan mahu sanhaare un); ch. 22 chhin mein badhe (others: kshan mein baandhe); ch. 24 tum keenha … sab kahun (others: tu keenha … sabko); ch. 26 Vishnu Rudra Aj sakahin na maari (Bharat Discovery and Bhakti Bharat print the garbled Vishnu Rudra jas kahin maari); ch. 30 jo … chaahai … naahai (others: ko … chaahe … naahe); ch. 31 bhange (others: bhanje); ch. 34 ehi maai (others: ehi bhaai); ch. 38 shat (also sat, the same word); ch. 39 Ramsagar baandhi hetu Bhavaani, keejai kripa daas nij jaani (Bharat Discovery, Bhakti Bharat and Hindupedia; InstaAstro: karahu kripa bhavamukti Bhavaani, mo kahan daas sada nij jaani; Hindu Blog drops the poet's name); closing doha 1 sooraj … dooban te (also soorya … dooban se); closing doha 2 Ramsagar adham ko, aashray too hi de daatu (Hindupedia and InstaAstro: adham Ramsagarahin tum, aashray deu punaatu). The sense of ch. 39 (“bound by love to Ramsagar”) is our cautious reading of an obscure line. The transliteration and both meanings are our own.
