In short: Mercury in Virgo is Mercury exalted (deepest at 15°), in its moolatrikona (15°–20°) and in its own sign — the only sign where a planet has all three. It tends to give precise, analytical, skilled and practical intelligence. Which life area it colours depends on the ascendant: the table further down shows each one.

Dignity
Mercury is exalted in Virgo, deepest at 15°. Exaltation is the highest sign dignity in BPHS: Mercury's significations — intellect, speech, trade, writing, skills and youthfulness — come out at their best. It still has to work through the houses it rules for the ascendant, so an exalted functional malefic gives strong results of a demanding house. Within the sign, the closer to 15°, the stronger. Mercury is never more than about 28° from the Sun, so the Sun is in Virgo or a neighbouring sign; together they form Budha-Aditya yoga, and close conjunction means combustion.
The Vedic view
Virgo is Mercury's own dual earth sign and its exaltation. Classical descriptions of Mercury in Virgo associate it with learning, eloquence, skill in writing and the arts, and virtue. Mercury spans Uttara Phalguni's later padas, Hasta and Chitra's first half; its deepest exaltation, 15°, falls in Hasta. In a kendra it forms Bhadra yoga. Because Mercury is never more than about 28° from the Sun, it is always in the Sun's sign or a neighbouring one, and is often combust; that closeness is read alongside its sign.
Character and temperament
The planet brings intellect, speech, trade, writing, skills and youthfulness; the sign makes it careful, analytical and service-minded. Being dual, the sign adapts, juggles more than one role and learns on the move.
Strengths: precision, analysis, skill, discernment and clear expression. Its deeper gift is quick understanding and the ability to explain.
Challenges: perfectionism, worry and over-criticism. Left unchecked, it slides toward overthinking and talking around a decision.
Love and marriage
In relationships it is helpful and thoughtful; may over-analyse. Mercury in any sign needs conversation, wit and a partner who is also a friend; in Virgo that becomes devoted love shown through practical care. Virgo is an earth sign, and in love it shows love through reliability, touch and practical care. Mercury rules conversation and friendship, so its sign shows how the person flirts, argues and makes up. For Pisces rising this is Mercury in the 7th, the house of the spouse, as lord of the 4th and 7th. Romance is in focus for Taurus rising, where Virgo is the 5th. More broadly, Mercury makes love conversational and youthful: friendship, humour and shared interests keep the bond alive.
Career and money
At work it favours analysis, accounting, health sciences, editing and IT. In general Mercury suits commerce, accounts, writing, teaching, software, media and negotiation. Virgo, being dual, adapts, juggles more than one role and learns on the move, which shapes the working style. For Sagittarius rising, Virgo is the 10th house of career, so this placement becomes a main career signature. By lordship and house it is most helpful to Virgo rising and Gemini rising; Leo rising and Scorpio rising get its harder side. Where money is concerned, income comes through skill, trade and more than one source. Wealth themes are strongest for Leo rising (the 2nd house) and Scorpio rising (the 11th).
Health and wellbeing
For wellbeing, tradition favours rest from worry. The planet's areas are nerves, skin, lungs and the restless mind; the sign's are the intestines and digestion. A helpful habit: writing a short daily plan and reading something substantial. This is traditional astrology, not medical advice.
The dispositor
Mercury rules Virgo itself and is its own dispositor, so its results depend on its house, aspects and nakshatra rather than on another planet. It answers to no one else here, which makes it easier to judge.
By nakshatra
The degree decides the nakshatra, and each brings its own lord into Mercury's story:
0°–10°: Mercury in Uttara Phalguni, ruled by the Sun, a friend to Mercury; deity Aryaman, god of contracts, friendship and marriage; for work it points to administration, contracts, marriage services, social work and government.
10°–23°20′: Mercury in Hasta, ruled by the Moon, an enemy to Mercury; deity Savitr, the inspiring the Sun; its gift is skilful hands and its shadow cleverness that turns sly.
23°20′–30°: Mercury in Chitra, ruled by Mars, neutral to Mercury; deity Tvashtr, the divine craftsman (later identified with Vishvakarma); for money it earns through craftsmanship and design.

Lordship changes with the rising sign, so the table below shows where Mercury in Virgo sits and what it governs in each case.

Navamsa and the two zodiacs
If Mercury is between 26°40′ and 30° Virgo, it is vargottama (same sign in the navamsa), a classical sign of steadiness. Readers who know their Western chart may find Mercury in Libra there: the sidereal–tropical gap is roughly 24°.
Mercury transiting Virgo
Time in the sign: from about two to eight weeks in a sign, depending on retrograde periods. Counted from the natal Moon (Phaladeepika ch. 26), the classically favourable Moon signs for this transit are Leo, Gemini, Aries, Aquarius, Sagittarius and Scorpio; vedha and ashtakavarga then refine the picture.
The Western view
In Western astrology Mercury both rules and is exalted in Virgo. Modern astrologers describe it as analytical, precise and practical.
