Chalisa · Surya
Shri Surya Chalisa: lyrics with meaning
Forty short verses to Surya, the Sun, the god we can all see. Below is the full text in Hindi, the same in English letters, and a plain meaning for every verse.
Listen: Surya Chalisa
A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.
Fast recitation, full text (3 min)
The complete text recited quickly, as many people chant it every day; nothing is left out.
Who Surya is, and what the chalisa is
Surya is the Sun, honoured since the Rigveda as the eye of the world and the giver of light and life. He is called pratyaksha devata, the god who can be seen directly. The Puranas picture him on a golden chariot drawn by seven horses, driven by Aruna, the dawn; he is the son of Aditi and Kashyapa (hence Aditya), and the father of Shani and of Yama, the lord of dharma. In Jyotish he is the first of the nine grahas, the planet of the soul, of the father and of authority.
A chalisa is a hymn of about forty verses (chalis means forty) in simple Hindi. The Surya Chalisa, which calls itself the Bhanu Chalisa in its last doha, opens with a doha, has forty chaupais and closes with a doha. It is built from old Sanskrit material retold in Hindi: it praises the Sun by his many names, recalls the twelve names said with the twelve salutations of Surya Namaskar, places a name of the Sun on each part of the body like a protective kavach (armour), and ends with the Sun's name for each month of the year. No poet is named; it is a traditional devotional text, printed in chalisa booklets and sung across North India.
The hopes it voices, of health, wealth and freedom from fear, are words of devotion, not promises. Many families recite it on Sundays or at sunrise, and keeping a regular day can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Questions
Who wrote the Surya Chalisa?
No poet is named in the text, and none is known. It is a traditional hymn that retells older Sanskrit praise of the Sun (his twelve names and the Surya Kavach) in simple Hindi.
Why is it also called the Bhanu Chalisa?
Bhanu, “the shining one”, is one of the Sun's names, and the closing doha calls the hymn “Bhanu Chalisa”.
What are the twelve names in the chalisa?
Chaupais 9 and 10 name them: Mitra, Marichi, Bhanu, Aruna, Bhaskara, Savita, Surya, Arka, Khaga, Kalikara, Pusha, Ravi and Aditya, ending with “Hiranyagarbhaya namah”. The twelve names said with the Surya Namaskar are Mitra, Ravi, Surya, Bhanu, Khaga, Pusha, Hiranyagarbha, Marichi, Aditya, Savita, Arka and Bhaskara; the chalisa keeps most of them and adds Aruna and Kalikara.
How is Surya connected with Jyotish?
In Jyotish the Sun is the first of the nine grahas, linked with the self, the father, vitality and authority. The chalisa itself is a hymn of devotion, not a remedy or a guarantee of any result. To see where the Sun sits in your own chart, open your free Kundli.
Text and sources
The text was compared line by line across four published versions: Bhakti Bharat (bhaktibharat.com), Aaj Tak (aajtak.in), Drik Panchang (drikpanchang.com, Hindi page) and an independent transcription on the Boond blog (boondadrop.blogspot.com). All four give the same opening doha, forty chaupais and closing doha, and none names a poet.
Variants: सहस्रांशु (ch. 1, 5 and 28; Aaj Tak and Drik Panchang; Bhakti Bharat and the blog spell it सहस्त्रांशु); ch. 40 रविहैं / रवि हैं (spacing only); punctuation and commas inside lines differ between editions. A few lines are hard to read in every edition (ch. 16 जमलहते सोतेहि छन, ch. 24 उरसर्म सुउदरचन, ch. 25 कटिमंह, ch. 39 हिमरेता, probably for हिरण्यरेता); we keep the text as all four print it, and the meanings give the most likely sense. The transliteration and both meanings are our own.
