In short: Mars (Mangala) turns retrograde about every 26 months, for roughly two to two and a half months, around the time it is opposite the Sun and closest to Earth. Astrologers associate the period with frustrated drive: energy that turns inward, plans that stall or need rerouting, old conflicts that resurface, and tempers that run shorter. The traditional advice is to redirect rather than force — finish and repair, train the body, think before fighting — and to postpone aggressive new ventures, lawsuits and confrontations where there is a choice. In Jyotish a retrograde Mars is strong in motion, and its effect is read through the house it crosses from your Moon and your dasha. The next Mars retrograde runs from 10 January to 1 April 2027.

The cycle

Mars's synodic period is about 780 days, so its retrogrades come roughly every two years and two months. Each lasts between about 58 and 81 days — longer than any other personal planet — and the shadow before and after adds months more. At the middle of the retrograde Mars is opposite the Sun: closest to Earth, rising at sunset, and at its brightest red.

Mangala, the son of the Earth

Mars's Sanskrit names Bhauma and Kuja mean "born of the Earth". In the Brahma Vaivarta Purana he is the son of Bhumi, the Earth goddess, and Vishnu in his boar form; a tradition preserved at the Mangalnath temple in Ujjain and told in the Avanti Khanda of the Skanda Purana says he was born from drops of Shiva's sweat that fell to the ground. Either way he is a warrior and a commander — red, fiery, brave and quick. In Jyotish Mars signifies courage, energy, siblings (especially younger), land and property, engineering, sport, the military and police, and, as traditional associations, blood, heat, cuts and surgery. BPHS (ch. 3) gives Mars Aries and Scorpio as its own signs, exaltation in Capricorn and debilitation in Cancer.

Mood and mind: anger with nowhere to go

The tradition's best-known association for Mars retrograde is irritability. Astrologers describe it as drive that cannot find its usual outlet: impatience with delays, a short fuse in traffic or at home, anger at old injustices, or — in quieter people — anger turned inward as fatigue, flatness or self-criticism. These are interpretations within astrology, not claims about how the body or brain works.

Traditional and practical counsel for this mood:

  • Name it early. Notice irritation before it becomes a quarrel.
  • Move the body. Physical exercise is the classic outlet for Mars, retrograde or not — within your limits, with care.
  • Wait before replying to the email or message that makes you angry.
  • Pick the battle. Retrograde Mars is associated with fighting old battles again; ask whether this one is worth it.

If anger or low mood is affecting your life or your relationships, that deserves real support from people you trust or a professional — not a wait for Mars to turn direct.

Love, marriage and family

Mars brings desire and friction to relationships, and in its retrograde both are said to turn back:

  • old resentments and power struggles resurface; small disputes escalate faster;
  • desire can feel muted, frustrated or turned inward, then return strongly as Mars turns direct;
  • disagreements with siblings or about property and land (Mars's significations) are common themes.

The advice is patience and plain, calm words. For couples, it can be a good time to work through a recurring argument with fresh eyes — and a poor time to deliver ultimatums. In Vedic matching, Mangal dosha is assessed from the birth charts and is not created or removed by a transit.

Money, property and work

  • Ventures. Traditionally not favoured for starting aggressive new ventures, risky bets, or competitive launches that depend on momentum. Finishing, repairing and strategising are favoured.
  • Disputes. Lawsuits and confrontations started now are said to drag or return; settle or prepare rather than escalate, and take legal advice as you normally would.
  • Property and vehicles. Mars governs land and machinery; many astrologers suggest waiting for Mars to turn direct to buy land, machinery or vehicles if there is a free choice.
  • Work. Frustration with authority or slow progress is a classic theme. Use it to rethink strategy, fix processes and train skills.

Wellbeing

Mars is traditionally associated with heat, cuts, accidents and haste, so astrologers counsel care with driving, sport, tools and fire during its retrograde. This is folklore, not medical advice: it amounts to common sense — warm up, don't rush, rest when tired. Elective surgery timing is a question for your doctor, not the sky.

What to do and what to avoid

Favoured Traditionally postponed if there is a choice
Finishing, repairing and rebuilding Starting quarrels, lawsuits or ultimatums
Physical training, steady exercise Risky stunts and hasty driving
Revisiting stalled projects with a new plan Launches that depend on a strong push
Settling old disputes Buying land, vehicles or machinery on impulse
Strategy, preparation, practice Confronting authority in anger

In your chart

Vedic. Count the house Mars occupies from your natal Moon. Phaladeepika (ch. 26) counts Mars's transit favourable only in the 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon; elsewhere it brings effort and friction to the house it crosses. Its 4th, 7th and 8th aspects (drishti) carry its influence to three more houses. A retrograde Mars is felt more in Mars's dasha, for Aries and Scorpio Moon signs or ascendants, and where it re-crosses a natal planet.

Western. Look at the house Mars retrogrades through and any natal planet it opposes or stations on. Mars stationing on your Sun, Moon, Venus or an angle is a classic signature of a demanding few weeks.

House by house

Wherever Mars retrogrades in your chart — counted from your Moon sign in Vedic practice, or by house in a Western chart — the tradition reads that area of life as the one under review:

House (from the Moon, or in your chart) What tends to come up for review
1st temper, energy and the body — go steady, exercise rather than explode
2nd money, family and speech — sharp words at home; avoid impulsive spending
3rd courage, siblings and effort — good for finishing hard work; avoid needless fights
4th home, property and inner peace — renovations and family tension need patience
5th romance, children and speculation — passion runs hot and cold; no risky bets
6th rivals, debts and work routines — a classic place for Mars; fight old battles wisely
7th marriage and partnerships — friction and power struggles; cool down before replying
8th shared money, risk and in-laws — avoid danger and haste; review loans
9th father, teachers and beliefs — arguments over principle; travel plans stall
10th career drive and authority — frustration at work; strategise rather than confront
11th gains, friends and ambitions — targets are revised; group disputes possible
12th expenses, sleep and hidden anger — rest, release tension, watch spending

FAQ

When is the next Mars retrograde? 10 January – 1 April 2027 (UTC), in tropical Virgo and Leo, and sidereal Leo and Cancer.

Does Mars retrograde make people angry? Astrologers have long associated it with irritability and frustration; that is a traditional interpretation, not a scientific finding. Noticing it, moving your body and waiting before replying are good habits any time.

Is Mars retrograde bad for marriage? It is associated with friction and old arguments, so astrologers counsel patience. It does not cause marriages to fail.

Is it bad to be born with Mars retrograde? No. Vedic astrology counts it strong in motion; Western astrologers often read it as energy that is deliberate and inwardly driven.
