In short: Mercury (Budha) appears to move backwards three or four times a year, for about three weeks each time. Western astrology associates these periods with crossed wires, delays, travel and technology hiccups, and contracts that need a second look; the better version of the advice is to use them for re-work — reviewing, revising, reconnecting and finishing. Vedic astrology counts a retrograde Mercury as strong in motion and reads it through the house it crosses from your Moon; in muhurta, a direct Mercury is still preferred for signing important agreements when there is a free choice. The useful advice in both traditions is ordinary good practice: read carefully, confirm details, back up, allow extra time.

The rhythm

Mercury's synodic period — from one retrograde to the next — is about 116 days, so it is retrograde for roughly a fifth of every year. Each retrograde lasts about three weeks, with a "shadow" of about two weeks on either side, when Mercury crosses the degrees it will retrace. Because successive retrogrades fall about a third of the zodiac apart, Mercury tends to spend a year or two retrograding through signs of one element before moving on to the next.

The current and coming dates, in both zodiacs, are in Mercury retrograde 2026–2027; what is retrograde today is on the sky right now.

What Mercury signifies

In Jyotish, Mercury is the prince of the planetary court: speech, intelligence, learning, writing, accounting, trade, contracts, messengers, siblings and friends, the nervous system as a traditional association, and the skin. BPHS (ch. 3) gives it Gemini and Virgo as its own signs, with Virgo also its exaltation; it is debilitated in Pisces. In Western astrology Mercury is the messenger — how you think, speak, learn, travel locally and exchange.

Mind and communication

The tradition associates Mercury retrograde with a mind that turns back over old material. Typical themes:

  • second thoughts and rethinking a decision already made;
  • misunderstandings — the message that arrives without its tone, the email that goes to the wrong person;
  • old conversations, old contacts and unfinished correspondence resurfacing;
  • slower, more inward thinking, good for editing, research and reflection.

The traditional counsel is to slow down before replying, say important things twice and kindly, and check what someone meant before reacting to what they said.

Love and relationships

For relationships, Mercury retrograde is about talk. Old conversations come back; a partner's words are easily misread; someone from the past sends a message. It is a good time to clear up a long-standing misunderstanding and a poor time to have a serious conversation by text. If both Mercury and Venus are retrograde together — as from 24 October to 13 November 2026 — astrologers read the theme of revisiting the past in love more strongly; see the double retrograde.

Contracts, money and work

  • Contracts. Many astrologers prefer not to sign major agreements during Mercury retrograde if there is a free choice, and to re-read anything that must be signed. Vedic muhurta weighs Mercury's condition for contracts, education and commerce.
  • Money. Double-check payments, invoices, account numbers and dates. Good for audits, reconciling accounts and chasing what you are owed.
  • Work. Favoured: editing, testing, fixing, follow-ups, finishing drafts, returning to old leads. Less favoured: launching a product, a website or a new system with no time to test it.

None of this is legal or financial advice — sign what you need to sign, with the care you would take any day.

Travel and technology

Mercury governs short journeys and the tools of communication, so the popular association with missed connections, lost luggage and misbehaving devices is strong. The practical response: confirm bookings and timings, leave margins, carry copies of documents, back up phones and computers, and update software deliberately rather than in a hurry. Mercury retrograde does not cause accidents or breakdowns; it is a reminder to do what we should always do.

What to do and what to avoid

Favoured Traditionally postponed if there is a choice
Reviewing, editing, finishing Signing major contracts in haste
Reconnecting with old contacts Launching with no time to test
Backing up, repairing, servicing Big purchases of electronics or vehicles on impulse
Clearing up old misunderstandings Serious conversations by text
Research, revision, study for exams already begun Starting a new course without checking the details

By sign and house

Vedic. Count the house Mercury occupies from your natal Moon. Phaladeepika (ch. 26) counts Mercury's transit favourable in the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th and 11th from the Moon; elsewhere it is mixed. A retrograde slows and repeats those results. It is more noticeable in Mercury's dasha, for people with Gemini or Virgo rising, and when Mercury re-crosses a natal planet.

Western. Look at the house of your chart in which the retrograde falls — that is the area of life up for review — and at any natal planet or angle Mercury stations on.

House by house

Wherever Mercury retrogrades in your chart — counted from your Moon sign in Vedic practice, or by house in a Western chart — the tradition reads that area of life as the one under review:

House (from the Moon, or in your chart) What tends to come up for review
1st how you speak and decide — think twice, speak once
2nd money talk, family conversations and speech — re-check figures and tone
3rd messages, siblings, short trips and paperwork — confirm details, back up files
4th home matters, property papers and vehicles — re-read documents, service the car
5th study, exams, creative writing and romance — revise rather than start; old messages from old loves
6th work routines, colleagues and health paperwork — audits and follow-ups go well
7th partnerships and contracts — renegotiate terms; clarify what was agreed
8th joint finances, taxes, insurance and research — read the small print
9th travel, higher study, teachers and publishing — double-check bookings and applications
10th career communication and the boss — re-send, re-present, re-pitch
11th friends, networks and income streams — reconnect; review what each brings
12th travel abroad, expenses and the inner life — journal, rest, check foreign paperwork

FAQ

How many Mercury retrogrades are there a year? Usually three, sometimes four, each about three weeks.

Is Mercury retrograde bad in Vedic astrology? Not by itself. Retrograde Mercury has high motional strength (BPHS ch. 27). Its results depend on the house it occupies and rules in your chart.

Can I start a job or move house during Mercury retrograde? Yes. Many astrologers prefer a direct Mercury for new beginnings if there is a free choice, but a well-chosen job or home does not become bad because of a three-week window.

What is the Mercury retrograde shadow? The weeks before and after the retrograde when Mercury crosses the same stretch of zodiac. Some astrologers treat it as a gentle lead-in and wind-down.
