In short: Jupiter (Guru, Brihaspati) is retrograde for about four months every year, around the time it is opposite the Sun. Astrologers associate the period with growth that turns inward: re-examining beliefs, plans for expansion, teachers and mentors, and promises made in optimism. It favours study, reflection, charity and consolidation more than rapid expansion. In Jyotish a retrograde Jupiter keeps its benefic nature and is strong in motion; it is read by the house it occupies from your Moon, and its return to a sign it has just left can repeat that house's blessings. The next Jupiter retrograde runs from 13 December 2026 to 13 April 2027.

The cycle

Jupiter's synodic period is about 399 days, so it turns retrograde a little over a month later each year, for roughly 120 days. Because it spends about a year in each sign, a retrograde often carries it back into the sign it has just left.

Brihaspati, the teacher

In the Rigveda (4.50) Brihaspati is the lord of sacred speech and the priest of the gods; in later tradition he is the deva-guru, the teacher of the devas. Jyotish makes Jupiter the greatest natural benefic: wisdom, dharma, teachers, children, wealth, faith, good counsel, the husband in a woman's chart in the classical texts, and the grace that lets good things grow. BPHS (ch. 3) gives Jupiter Sagittarius and Pisces as its own signs, exaltation in Cancer and debilitation in Capricorn.

Mind and meaning

The tradition associates Jupiter retrograde with reflection about meaning — what you believe, whom you learn from, where your life is heading. Optimism looks for depth rather than more. It is a favoured time for study, scripture, philosophy, finishing a degree or a book, and for honest reassessment of a guru, a mentor or a cause. Astrologers sometimes note that over-confident plans meet their reality check now.

Love and marriage

Jupiter matters greatly in Vedic marriage timing: its transit over the 7th house, or aspecting the 7th house or its lord, from the Moon or ascendant, is classically one of the signals astrologers watch (see marriage timing). Its retrograde can repeat that window — a Jupiter that retreats into the previous sign re-activates the house it has just left. For choosing the wedding date itself, Vedic muhurta avoids Jupiter's combustion (when it is too close to the Sun to be seen) far more firmly than its retrograde; many astrologers nevertheless prefer a direct Jupiter if there is a choice. In Western astrology, Jupiter retrograde is read as a time to deepen existing commitments rather than make lavish new ones.

Money, career and growth

  • Investments and expansion: review long-term plans, overstretched commitments and forecasts built on optimism; consolidate before expanding.
  • Career: favoured for training, mentoring, further qualifications and repairing relationships with seniors; big leaps are often better timed after Jupiter turns direct.
  • Generosity: charity, teaching and giving back are the classical Jupiter remedies, and especially apt now.

As always, this is the tradition's lens, not financial advice.

What to do and what to avoid

Favoured Traditionally postponed if there is a choice
Study, teaching, writing, scripture Over-promising, over-extending
Reviewing investments and long-term plans Expanding a business on borrowed optimism
Charity and service Lavish beginnings for show
Returning to a teacher, course or practice Abandoning a path without reflection

In your chart

Vedic. Phaladeepika (ch. 26) counts Jupiter's transit favourable in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th from the natal Moon. Jupiter's 5th, 7th and 9th aspects bless three more houses. A retrograde that carries it back into the previous sign repeats that sign's house results for a few months. The effect is clearest in Jupiter's dasha and for Sagittarius and Pisces Moon signs or ascendants.

Western. Look at the house Jupiter retrogrades through — the area where growth turns to reflection — and any natal planet it stations on.

House by house

Wherever Jupiter retrogrades in your chart — counted from your Moon sign in Vedic practice, or by house in a Western chart — the tradition reads that area of life as the one under review:

House (from the Moon, or in your chart) What tends to come up for review
1st faith in yourself, health habits and direction — reflection over expansion
2nd savings, family and values — review investments and promises
3rd effort, courage and communication — rethink projects before announcing them
4th home, education and contentment — property and family plans mature slowly
5th children, study, romance and investment — revisit plans; wisdom over speculation
6th work, loans and wellbeing — review debts and routines
7th marriage and partnerships — commitments are reconsidered; Vedic astrologers check Jupiter before fixing marriage dates
8th shared resources, research and inheritance — inner study, careful with joint money
9th teachers, dharma, luck and long journeys — re-examine beliefs; pilgrimages and study revisited
10th career and reputation — growth is consolidated rather than pushed
11th gains, elder siblings and networks — past opportunities return
12th expenses, spirituality and foreign lands — retreat, charity and rest are favoured

FAQ

Is Jupiter retrograde bad? No. Jupiter stays a benefic. The tradition reads its retrograde as growth that deepens rather than spreads.

Can I marry during Jupiter retrograde? Many weddings happen during Jupiter retrograde. Vedic muhurta is far stricter about Jupiter's combustion. Ask an astrologer to read the whole muhurta.

How long is Jupiter retrograde? About four months, every year.
