In short: Purva Bhadrapada is the twenty-fifth nakshatra, spanning 20° of sidereal Aquarius to 3°20′ of Pisces. Its deity is Aja Ekapada, the mysterious "one-footed goat" or "unborn one-footed one", and its ruling planet is Jupiter. Its name means "the former auspicious feet", and its symbol is the front legs of a funeral cot — or a man with two faces. Purva Bhadrapada is the energy of fierce idealism: burning conviction, intensity, the willingness to sacrifice comfort for a cause, and the transformation that comes from facing the end of something. People with the Moon or ascendant here tend to be passionate, principled, eloquent and capable of great change.

The story: the one-footed one
Aja Ekapada is one of the most enigmatic figures in the Veda. The Rigveda names him only a few times, usually beside Ahir Budhnya, "the serpent of the depths" (for example 6.50.14 and 10.65.13), who is the deity of the next nakshatra. His name can be read as "the one-footed goat" or as "the unborn (a-ja) one-footed one". Interpreters have seen in him a pillar holding up the sky, a flash of lightning standing on one point, or the Sun as a single foot of light. In later tradition he is counted among the eleven Rudras, the fierce forms of Shiva.
Whatever he was originally, his image is of something single-pointed, standing alone, connecting earth and heaven — and of fire. Purva Bhadrapada has long been associated with the fire that purifies by burning, and with the funeral cot: the place where one life ends and the soul moves on. The pair of nakshatras, Purva and Uttara Bhadrapada, are two halves of that passage — the burning and the depths beyond.
The two-faced man, its other symbol, speaks to its duality: Purva Bhadrapada can be gentle and fierce, worldly and otherworldly, by turns.
In the sky
Purva Bhadrapada's stars are Markab and Scheat (α and β Pegasi), the western side of the Great Square of Pegasus. In Arabic astronomy they formed the twenty-sixth lunar mansion, al-Fargh al-Muqaddam, "the fore spout" of the water-bucket. The month of Bhadrapada, in which Ganesh Chaturthi falls, is named after the two Bhadrapadas, near which its full Moon falls.
The nature of Purva Bhadrapada
Muhurta texts class Purva Bhadrapada as ugra, fierce — suited to bold or forceful actions and avoided for gentle beginnings. Its temperament is manushya, human. Jupiter rules it, giving idealism, faith and expansive vision, and it spans Saturn's Aquarius and Jupiter's own Pisces — humanitarian reform in the first three padas, spiritual surrender in the last.
Purva Bhadrapada's core qualities are passion, idealism, eloquence, intensity, generosity and a capacity for radical change. It can be a reformer, an ascetic or a visionary. It often lives through a major transformation that clarifies its purpose.
Strengths
- Idealism. Purva Bhadrapada lives for a cause larger than itself.
- Eloquence. Jupiter gives it persuasive, inspired speech.
- Courage. It does not flinch from hard truths or sacrifice.
- Generosity. It gives of itself fully.
Challenges
- Extremism. Conviction can become fanaticism or harshness.
- Inner conflict. The two faces may pull in opposite directions.
- Intensity. It may burn out, or burn others.
Purva Bhadrapada's growth often lies in tempering its fire with compassion — the gift of the next nakshatra.
The Moon in Purva Bhadrapada
With the Moon here, the emotional nature is intense, idealistic and sometimes restless. These people often feel strongly about justice and meaning, and they may swing between sociability and withdrawal. In the Aquarius padas they are more detached and reform-minded; in the Pisces pada, more devotional and compassionate.
The ascendant and other planets in Purva Bhadrapada
A Purva Bhadrapada ascendant tends to give an intense gaze and a striking, sometimes unusual presence. Jupiter in its own nakshatra here is idealistic and philosophical, and in the Pisces pada it is also in its own sign. Saturn in the Aquarius padas is principled and reforming. Venus in the Pisces pada is in its exaltation sign. The Sun transits Purva Bhadrapada from roughly early to mid-March.

Reading Purva Bhadrapada in a chart
When a planet or the Moon sits in Purva Bhadrapada, look first at Jupiter, the nakshatra lord: its dignity shows whether the nakshatra's fire is guided by wisdom. Then look at the sign lord — Saturn for the Aquarius padas, Jupiter for the Pisces pada — which shows whether the idealism is reforming or devotional. Finally, the house: Purva Bhadrapada in the 9th often describes an intense faith or philosophy; in the 10th, a career of reform or advocacy; in the 8th or 12th, spiritual transformation; in the 1st, a striking, intense personality. A planet here often gives some of its results in Jupiter's sub-periods.
In relationships and matching
Purva Bhadrapada is a manushya gana nakshatra, with the lion as its yoni and Adi (Vata) as its nadi. Its yoni pairs most naturally with Dhanishta, the other lion nakshatra; the elephant nakshatras (Bharani and Revati) are the lion's traditional enemy.
In everyday terms, Purva Bhadrapada partners are passionate, loyal and idealistic, and they need a partner who shares their values and can meet their intensity. They flourish when a relationship is also a shared purpose.
Career and work
Purva Bhadrapada favours reform and inspiration: social and political activism, religion and philosophy, law, writing and oratory, research, occult study, and work with fire, energy and transformation. It is often drawn to causes.
Health as wellbeing
Purva Bhadrapada spans Aquarius (calves, ankles, circulation) and Pisces (the feet), and its fiery deity links it with heat and intensity. As wellbeing, it benefits from cooling practices, rest from causes and gentleness with itself. These are traditional associations, not medical advice.
The dasha connection
A person born with the Moon in Purva Bhadrapada begins life in the Jupiter mahadasha, sixteen years long. The balance remaining at birth depends on how far the Moon has travelled through the nakshatra. Saturn's nineteen-year dasha follows, then Mercury's seventeen (BPHS ch. 46).
Muhurta: choosing a time
As an ugra nakshatra within the panchaka period, Purva Bhadrapada is traditionally reserved for bold or decisive actions and avoided for marriage and other gentle beginnings. Tithi, weekday and other factors are weighed together.
Traditional practice
For Purva Bhadrapada the tradition looks to Shiva in his fierce Rudra forms, with whom Aja Ekapada is identified, and to fire rituals (homa). For Jupiter, the nakshatra lord, it recommends honouring teachers, study and Thursday charity. These are traditional practices, not promises.
Living with Purva Bhadrapada
Purva Bhadrapada people often feel they were born for something. The task is to discover what — and to pursue it without burning down everything else on the way. When its fire is aimed well, this nakshatra produces the reformers, teachers and visionaries who change how others live.
A note for Western readers
Western astrology does not use the nakshatras. Markab and Scheat lie in late tropical Pisces (around 23° and 29°); Western fixed-star lore gave Pegasus's stars a mixed character of ambition and danger.
