In short: Libra is the cardinal air sign, ruled by Venus. Saturn is exalted here and the Sun is debilitated. It is the energy of balance and relationship: fairness, diplomacy, beauty, partnership and the art of weighing one thing against another. Libra people tend to be gracious, sociable and fair-minded, and to feel most themselves in good company.

The scales in myth and sky

Libra is the only sign of the zodiac that is not a living creature. It was not always a pair of scales. Greek astronomers, following Aratus, called its stars Chelai, "the Claws" — the outstretched pincers of the Scorpion next to it — and the names of its two brightest stars still say so: Zubenelgenubi and Zubeneschamali, Arabic for "the southern claw" and "the northern claw". By the first century BCE, Roman writers were calling the figure Libra, the balance, and it came to be pictured as the scales of justice held by the neighbouring Virgo, the maiden Dike or Astraea. The Babylonians had already linked these stars with a balance, and the symbolism was apt: in antiquity the Sun passed through this part of the sky at the autumn equinox, when day and night are equal.

In Sanskrit the sign is Tula, the balance. Varahamihira pictures it as a man holding a pair of scales in a marketplace — the merchant and the judge in one figure — and records the Greek-derived name Juka, from Zygon, the yoke or balance beam.

The two claw stars form the nakshatra Vishakha, "the forked" or "the two-branched", whose deities are Indra and Agni together. The nakshatra Swati, "the independent one" or "sword", is traditionally identified with the bright star Arcturus, well north of the zodiac in Boötes, and its deity is Vayu, the wind.

Two zodiacs, one sign

In the tropical zodiac the Sun enters Libra at the September equinox, about 23 September, and stays until about 22 October. In the sidereal zodiac the Sun enters Tula around 17 October and stays until about 16 November. Tula Sankramana is celebrated in Karnataka at Talakaveri, the source of the river Kaveri. Many Western Libras are Vedic Virgo, and many Vedic Libras are Western Scorpio.

What Libra means

In Vedic astrology

BPHS ch. 4 and Brihat Jataka ch. 1 describe Libra as an airy, movable, masculine sign, rising head first, strong by day, with its direction in the west. It is the lower abdomen of the cosmic person and the natural 7th house: marriage, partnership, contracts, trade, and other people in general.

Venus rules Libra and has its moolatrikona in the first 15°. Saturn is exalted here, deepest at 20°: the planet of justice and duty is at its best where fair measure and agreement matter. The Sun is debilitated here, deepest at 10°: the self that wants to stand alone is weakest in the sign of the other. It is a "human" sign, a sign of trade and the marketplace, and a sign of travel.

In Western astrology

Ptolemy assigns Libra to Venus as domicile and to Saturn as exaltation. Mars is in detriment here (opposite its own sign Aries), and the Sun is in fall. In the Hellenistic scheme the air signs are ruled by Saturn by day and Mercury by night, with Jupiter participating.

Modern Western astrology reads Libra as the archetype of relationship and aesthetics: the diplomat, the partner, the mediator, the artist of balance.

Strengths

Libra gives grace, tact, fairness, charm and a real gift for seeing the other person's point of view. It brings people together, smooths conflict, and has an eye for beauty and proportion in everything from design to conversation. It values justice, and it can be surprisingly firm when something is unfair.

Challenges

The shadow of balance is indecision. Libra may weigh options so long that the moment passes, avoid conflict at the cost of honesty, or shape itself to please others. It may depend too much on partnership for its sense of self — the lesson of the Sun's debility here. Its growth often comes through learning that a clear "no" can be an act of fairness too.

In relationships

This is Libra's home ground. It loves through partnership, companionship, courtesy and shared beauty, and it wants a relationship between equals. It is romantic and considerate, and it works hard to keep the peace. Its opposite sign, Aries (the 7th from Libra), describes the partnership lesson: directness, courage and knowing what one wants.

In career and work

Libra suits work involving people and judgement: law and mediation, diplomacy, human resources, design, fashion and the arts, beauty, hospitality, counselling, trade and commerce (the merchant of the classical image), and partnerships of all kinds. It works best collaboratively, in pleasant surroundings.

Health as wellbeing

Libra is the lower abdomen of the Vedic cosmic person and the kidneys and lower back in Western astrology. As wellbeing, it benefits from balance in everything — rest and activity, company and solitude — and from beauty and harmony in its surroundings. These are traditional associations, not medical advice.

How Libra changes

  • As Sun sign: the Sun is debilitated here, so the core identity is formed in relationship; diplomacy is a gift, self-assertion a lesson.
  • As Moon sign: the emotional nature is sociable and harmony-seeking; the person feels safe in good company and peaceful surroundings.
  • As ascendant: the person tends to be graceful and personable. Venus is lagna lord (also ruling the 8th). Saturn, ruling the 4th and 5th and exalted in the sign itself, is the yogakaraka — the most beneficial planet for Libra rising.
  • By nakshatra. Chitra's second half (0°–6°40′) gives craftsmanship and style; Swati (6°40′–20°) gives independence, flexibility and business sense; Vishakha's first three padas (20°–30°) give ambition and single-minded purpose.
  • By planets in it. Saturn here is exalted, just and patient; the Sun here learns cooperation; Venus here is refined and fair; Mars here pushes for balance in a hurry.

Libra in every chart

Everyone has Libra somewhere in the chart. The house it occupies is where you seek balance, partnership and beauty. Libra on the 10th points to a career in partnership, law or design; on the 2nd, money earned through others; on the 1st, a gracious, diplomatic presence.

Following the ruler

Venus, ruler of Libra, is the planet to follow. Wherever Venus sits by sign and house shows where Libra's search for harmony finally lands: Venus in the 7th makes partnership central, in the 10th brings it into public life, in the 4th into a beautiful home. A strong Venus makes every Libra placement more graceful; a strained Venus asks them to stop pleasing and start choosing.

Sign aspects (Jaimini)

In the Jaimini system (rashi drishti, Jaimini Sutras ch. 1), movable signs aspect the fixed signs except the fixed sign next to them. So Libra aspects Aquarius, Taurus and Leo, but not Scorpio. Jaimini astrologers use these sign aspects in chara dasha and in judging how houses influence each other.

Vedic and Western views compared

The traditions agree on Libra's nature, Venus's rulership, Saturn's exaltation and the Sun's fall. They differ on the zodiac: tropical Libra begins exactly at the September equinox, while sidereal Libra begins at the star Spica, about 24° further on. They differ slightly on the body association too.

FAQ

What are the dates for Libra? Tropical: about 23 September – 22 October. Sidereal: about 17 October – 16 November.

Who rules Libra? Venus, in both traditions.

Why is Saturn exalted in Libra? Astrologers read it as justice and duty at their best where fairness and agreement matter. The texts give the dignity without explaining it.

Why is the Sun debilitated in Libra? The self that wants to stand alone is weakest in the sign of partnership. Debility can be cancelled, and the placement often gives diplomacy.

Why is Libra the only non-living sign? Its stars were once the claws of the Scorpion; the scales came later, perhaps because the Sun passed here at the equinox, when day and night balance.
