In short: Chamara yoga — named for the royal fly-whisk — is traditionally linked with honour, learning and eloquence. Its main form is the lagna lord exalted in an angle and aspected by Jupiter.

The rule

Chamara yoga forms when the lagna lord is exalted in a kendra and aspected by Jupiter (Phaladeepika ch. 6). An alternative form is two benefics in the 1st, 7th, 9th or 10th house.

What it means

The fly-whisk was a royal emblem; classical texts describe a learned, eloquent, honoured and long-lived person.

Which lagna lords can form it

For the main form, the lagna lord must be exalted in an angle from the ascendant. That is possible only for certain rising signs: the lagna lord's exaltation sign must fall in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house. For example, Mars (lord of Aries rising) is exalted in Capricorn, the 10th from Aries; Venus (lord of Libra rising) is exalted in Pisces, which is the 6th from Libra — so Libra rising cannot form the main version with Venus. The Moon (lord of Cancer rising) is exalted in Taurus, the 11th from Cancer, so Cancer rising cannot either. Working through each ascendant this way shows that the strict form is uncommon.

The alternative form

Phaladeepika also gives Chamara when two natural benefics occupy the 1st, 7th, 9th or 10th house. This version is commoner and is read as a lighter blessing: eloquence, learning and respect, with the specific benefics colouring it — Jupiter learning and dharma, Venus refinement and art, Mercury speech and skill, a bright Moon popularity.

Reading it honestly

Both forms describe a dignified, well-supported chart ruler or well-placed benefics in key houses. Their promise of honour and long life is realised through the lagna lord's dasha and the benefics' periods, and is tempered by the rest of the chart. A strong lagna lord is valuable in any chart, whether or not it meets the exact rule.

Jupiter's aspect

Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th signs from itself. For Aries rising with Mars exalted in Capricorn in the 10th, Jupiter aspects Capricorn from Virgo (its 5th aspect), from Cancer (its 7th) or from Taurus (its 9th); some authors also accept Jupiter conjunct the lagna lord. Working through the possibilities shows why the strict yoga is uncommon.

What weakens or cancels it

Affliction or combustion weakens it.

Background

The chamara, a whisk made of yak tail, was carried beside kings and deities as a sign of honour, and it still appears in temple worship. The yoga's main form is demanding — the lagna lord must be exalted in an angle and aspected by Jupiter — so it is uncommon; the alternative form with two benefics in key houses is commoner and usually read as a lighter version.

When it gives results

A yoga gives its results mainly in the dashas of the planets that form it. Here that means the mahadashas and antardashas of Jupiter (Vimshottari mahadasha lengths: Jupiter 16 years). Within those periods, transits of Jupiter and Saturn over the planets or houses involved often mark the moments when the yoga becomes visible.

Checking it in a chart

To judge this yoga in a real chart, Sunyra checks, in order: that the formation rule is met exactly (by sign, using whole-sign houses); the dignity of Jupiter by sign and in the navamsa; combustion, retrogression and planetary war; aspects from natural benefics and malefics; the houses the planets rule for the ascendant; Shadbala strength; and the running and coming dashas. A yoga that passes these checks is described with confidence; one that does not is described as weak or partial.

How to read it honestly

Like every yoga, this one describes a potential. Whether and when it shows depends on the strength of the planets involved, the houses they rule, aspects from benefics and malefics, the divisional charts, and the dashas of the planets that form it. Classical texts list hundreds of yogas, and most charts contain several; no single yoga decides a life.

These yogas are often read alongside this one:

  • Amala Yoga — Amala ('spotless') yoga forms when a natural benefic — Jupiter, Venus, Mercury or a bright Moon — occupies the 10th house from the ascendant or from the Moon.
  • Parvata Yoga — Parvata ('mountain') yoga is traditionally linked with prosperity, generosity and fame.
  • Vasumati Yoga — Vasumati yoga — 'possessing wealth' — forms when natural benefics occupy the upachaya (growth) houses, the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th, counted from the ascendant or the Moon.
  • Saraswati Yoga — Saraswati yoga, named after the goddess of learning and the arts, forms when the three benefics — Jupiter, Venus and Mercury — occupy angles, trines or the 2nd house, with Jupiter well dignified.
  • Shubha and Papa Kartari Yoga — Kartari means 'scissors'.

FAQ

Which lagna lords can be exalted in an angle? Any lagna lord whose exaltation sign falls in an angle from that ascendant; for example, Mars for Aries rising exalted in Capricorn in the 10th.
