In short: Saraswati yoga, named after the goddess of learning and the arts, forms when the three benefics — Jupiter, Venus and Mercury — occupy angles, trines or the 2nd house, with Jupiter well dignified. It is traditionally linked with learning, eloquence and artistic gifts.
The rule
Saraswati yoga forms when Jupiter, Venus and Mercury are each in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th), a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) or the 2nd house, and Jupiter is in its own sign, exaltation or a friend's sign (Phaladeepika ch. 6).
What it means
Classical texts describe the person as learned, eloquent, skilled in poetry and the arts, and wealthy and respected. The three benefics together in the strongest houses describe a mind well supported for study and expression.
How demanding is the rule?
Each of the three benefics must be in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th), a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) or the 2nd house — seven of the twelve houses. Mercury and Venus stay close to the Sun, so they are often in neighbouring houses; when Jupiter also falls in one of these seven houses and is in its own sign (Sagittarius, Pisces), exaltation (Cancer) or a friend's sign (Leo, Aries, Scorpio), the yoga forms. It is therefore not rare, but the full strength — all three dignified and Mercury not combust — is uncommon.
The goddess and the planets
Saraswati is the goddess of learning, speech, music and the arts, pictured with a vina and a book. The yoga assigns her three aspects to three planets: Jupiter for wisdom and scripture, Mercury for intellect and speech, Venus for music and art. Which of the three is strongest often shows which of her gifts is most developed.
In the dashas
The yoga is most visible in the dashas of Jupiter, Mercury and Venus, especially when they fall during education. A strong Saraswati yoga in a Mercury or Jupiter period during the student years is a classic picture of academic success; in a Venus period, of artistic development.
What strengthens it
All three dignified and unafflicted, with Mercury not combust, give the strongest form.
What weakens or cancels it
Combustion of Mercury or Venus, debility or affliction weakens it.
Background
Saraswati is the goddess of knowledge, music and speech. Her yoga combines Jupiter (wisdom), Mercury (intellect and speech) and Venus (art), placed where they are most effective.
When it gives results
A yoga gives its results mainly in the dashas of the planets that form it. Here that means the mahadashas and antardashas of Jupiter, Venus, Mercury (Vimshottari mahadasha lengths: Jupiter 16 years; Venus 20 years; Mercury 17 years). Within those periods, transits of Jupiter and Saturn over the planets or houses involved often mark the moments when the yoga becomes visible.
Checking it in a chart
To judge this yoga in a real chart, Sunyra checks, in order: that the formation rule is met exactly (by sign, using whole-sign houses); the dignity of Jupiter, Venus, Mercury by sign and in the navamsa; combustion, retrogression and planetary war; aspects from natural benefics and malefics; the houses the planets rule for the ascendant; Shadbala strength; and the running and coming dashas. A yoga that passes these checks is described with confidence; one that does not is described as weak or partial.
How to read it honestly
Like every yoga, this one describes a potential. Whether and when it shows depends on the strength of the planets involved, the houses they rule, aspects from benefics and malefics, the divisional charts, and the dashas of the planets that form it. Classical texts list hundreds of yogas, and most charts contain several; no single yoga decides a life.
