In short: Budhaditya (Budha-Aditya) yoga forms when the Sun and Mercury occupy the same sign. It is traditionally linked with intelligence, skill and good judgement — and it is very common, because Mercury never strays far from the Sun.
The rule
Budhaditya yoga forms when the Sun and Mercury are in the same sign.
What it means
Classical descriptions link the combination with intelligence, learning, skill in work and a good reputation. In modern terms it joins the self (Sun) with the mind (Mercury): articulate leadership, analytical ability and confidence in one's ideas.
Distance from the Sun
The closer Mercury is to the Sun, the more combust it is. Many astrologers treat a Mercury more than about 14° from the Sun as free of combustion, and some argue that Mercury, being so often near the Sun, is less harmed by combustion than other planets. A Mercury within a degree of the Sun is sometimes treated as specially strong in Western tradition (cazimi), an idea not found in classical Vedic texts.
By house
In the 1st the combination gives an articulate, confident personality; in the 10th, an intellectual or administrative career and directional strength for the Sun; in the 5th or 9th, intelligence in study and teaching; in the 2nd, eloquent speech and skill with money. In the 6th, 8th or 12th it can turn toward analysis, research or behind-the-scenes work. The houses the Sun and Mercury rule for the ascendant matter as much as the house they occupy.
What strengthens it
It is strongest in Virgo (Mercury exalted and at home), Gemini (Mercury at home), Leo (Sun at home) or Aries (Sun exalted), in an angle or trine, with Mercury not too close to the Sun, and aspected by Jupiter.
What weakens or cancels it
It is weakened when Mercury is deeply combust, when Mercury is debilitated in Pisces or the Sun in Libra, when afflicted by malefics, or when it falls in a difficult house for the ascendant.
An example
With Gemini rising, the Sun and Mercury together in Virgo in the 4th house: Mercury exalted and lagna lord, the Sun as 3rd lord — a Budhaditya yoga strong for education and communication, provided Mercury is not too close to the Sun.
Background
The name joins Budha (Mercury) and Aditya (the Sun). It became one of the most familiar yogas in modern popular astrology; classical texts mention the Sun–Mercury combination in their discussions of two-planet conjunctions. Its frequency is the main reason careful astrologers insist on strength conditions before calling it significant.
When it gives results
A yoga gives its results mainly in the dashas of the planets that form it. Here that means the mahadashas and antardashas of Sun, Mercury (Vimshottari mahadasha lengths: Sun 6 years; Mercury 17 years). Within those periods, transits of Jupiter and Saturn over the planets or houses involved often mark the moments when the yoga becomes visible.
Checking it in a chart
To judge this yoga in a real chart, Sunyra checks, in order: that the formation rule is met exactly (by sign, using whole-sign houses); the dignity of Sun, Mercury by sign and in the navamsa; combustion, retrogression and planetary war; aspects from natural benefics and malefics; the houses the planets rule for the ascendant; Shadbala strength; and the running and coming dashas. A yoga that passes these checks is described with confidence; one that does not is described as weak or partial.
How to read it honestly
Like every yoga, this one describes a potential. Whether and when it shows depends on the strength of the planets involved, the houses they rule, aspects from benefics and malefics, the divisional charts, and the dashas of the planets that form it. Classical texts list hundreds of yogas, and most charts contain several; no single yoga decides a life.

FAQ
Why is Budhaditya yoga so common? Because Mercury always stays within about 28° of the Sun, they share a sign very often.
Does combustion cancel Budhaditya yoga? Deep combustion weakens it in most authors' view; many consider Mercury less harmed by combustion than other planets.
Is Budhaditya yoga good for career? In the 10th or 1st house, and with dignity, it is traditionally favourable for intellectual and administrative careers.
