In short: Dharma-karmadhipati yoga forms when the lords of the 9th (dharma) and 10th (karma) houses are related by conjunction, aspect or exchange. It is the most celebrated raja yoga: right purpose joined with right action.

The rule

Dharma-karmadhipati yoga forms when the 9th lord and the 10th lord are related — conjoined, in mutual aspect, or in exchange of signs (BPHS ch. 39). Where one planet rules both the 9th and 10th, as Saturn does for Taurus rising, it is a yogakaraka and the yoga is present in that planet itself.

For each ascendant

The 9th and 10th lords for each ascendant:

Rising sign 9th lord 10th lord
Aries Jupiter Saturn
Taurus Saturn Saturn (same planet)
Gemini Saturn Jupiter
Cancer Jupiter Mars
Leo Mars Venus
Virgo Venus Mercury
Libra Mercury Moon
Scorpio Moon Sun
Sagittarius Sun Mercury
Capricorn Mercury Venus
Aquarius Venus Mars
Pisces Mars Jupiter

What it means

The 9th house is fortune, dharma and the teacher; the 10th is career and action. Their lords together are traditionally linked with a career aligned with purpose, good fortune in work, recognition and ethical success.

Strong and weak forms

The strongest form is a conjunction or exchange of the 9th and 10th lords in an angle or trine, both dignified. Mutual aspect is a lighter form. When one of the two lords also rules a difficult house — the 9th lord ruling the 12th, for instance — the yoga still forms but carries that house's themes too.

What strengthens it

It is strongest when both lords are dignified, in an angle or trine, unafflicted and strong in the navamsa (D9) and dashamsha (D10).

What weakens or cancels it

It is weakened when either lord also rules a dusthana and is placed there, or when combust, debilitated or afflicted.

An example

With Leo rising, the 9th lord Mars and the 10th lord Venus conjoined in the 10th (Taurus) form the yoga, with Mars also the yogakaraka.

Background

The name joins dharma (right order, purpose) and karma (action, work) with adhipati (lord). It expresses a deep idea in Indian thought: work is best when it serves one's dharma. Classical texts rank it among the finest raja yogas.

When it gives results

A lordship yoga gives its results in the dashas of the planets that form it in the individual chart — the house lords named in the rule. Their Vimshottari mahadashas range from 6 years (the Sun) to 20 (Venus); a yoga whose planets' dashas fall in childhood or very late in life is felt less than one whose dashas run in the active years. Transits of Jupiter and Saturn over the planets or houses involved often mark the moments when it becomes visible.

Checking it in a chart

To judge this yoga in a real chart, Sunyra checks, in order: that the formation rule is met exactly (by sign, using whole-sign houses); the dignity of the planets that form it by sign and in the navamsa; combustion, retrogression and planetary war; aspects from natural benefics and malefics; the houses the planets rule for the ascendant; Shadbala strength; and the running and coming dashas. A yoga that passes these checks is described with confidence; one that does not is described as weak or partial.

How to read it honestly

Like every yoga, this one describes a potential. Whether and when it shows depends on the strength of the planets involved, the houses they rule, aspects from benefics and malefics, the divisional charts, and the dashas of the planets that form it. Classical texts list hundreds of yogas, and most charts contain several; no single yoga decides a life.

These yogas are often read alongside this one:

  • Raja Yoga in Astrology — A raja yoga ('royal combination') forms when the lord of an angle (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and the lord of a trine (1st, 5th, 9th) are related by conjunction, aspect or exchange.
  • Dhana Yoga — Dhana yogas are combinations for wealth.
  • Lakshmi Yoga — Lakshmi yoga, named after the goddess of wealth and fortune, is traditionally formed when the 9th lord is strong in an angle in its own or exaltation sign and the lagna lord is strong.
  • Kahala Yoga — Kahala yoga is traditionally linked with courage, leadership and command.
  • Parivartana Yoga — Parivartana — exchange — yoga forms when two planets sit in each other's signs: for example Mars in Taurus and Venus in Aries.

FAQ

Which ascendant has one planet ruling both the 9th and 10th? Only Taurus rising, where Saturn rules both and is the yogakaraka.

Is dharma-karmadhipati yoga rare? Some relationship between the 9th and 10th lords is fairly common; a strong, close one is less so.
