In short: Lakshmi yoga, named after the goddess of wealth and fortune, is traditionally formed when the 9th lord is strong in an angle in its own or exaltation sign and the lagna lord is strong. It is linked with prosperity, nobility and good fortune.

The rule

In BPHS, Lakshmi yoga forms when the 9th lord is in a kendra in its own sign, moolatrikona or exaltation, and the lagna lord is strong (BPHS ch. 36, v. 27 in the common numbering). The verse is compact: it can also be read as giving the kendra and the dignity as alternatives rather than requiring both, and translators differ.

For each ascendant

The 9th lord and the lagna lord for each ascendant:

Rising sign Lagna lord 9th lord 9th lord's own/exaltation signs
Aries Mars Jupiter Cancer, Sagittarius, Pisces
Taurus Venus Saturn Libra, Capricorn, Aquarius
Gemini Mercury Saturn Libra, Capricorn, Aquarius
Cancer Moon Jupiter Cancer, Sagittarius, Pisces
Leo Sun Mars Aries, Scorpio, Capricorn
Virgo Mercury Venus Taurus, Libra, Pisces
Libra Venus Mercury Gemini, Virgo
Scorpio Mars Moon Taurus, Cancer
Sagittarius Jupiter Sun Aries, Leo
Capricorn Saturn Mercury Gemini, Virgo
Aquarius Saturn Venus Taurus, Libra, Pisces
Pisces Jupiter Mars Aries, Scorpio, Capricorn

What it means

The 9th house is fortune and grace; a strong 9th lord in an angle brings that fortune into the visible, structural parts of life. Classical texts describe wealth, learning, a good family and renown.

Reading it

Check the 9th lord's sign: is it in its own sign, moolatrikona or exaltation, and in an angle from the ascendant? Then check the lagna lord's strength. The table above lists, for each ascendant, the 9th lord and the signs that satisfy the dignity condition.

What strengthens it

Stronger when the 9th lord and lagna lord are both unafflicted and strong in the navamsa.

What weakens or cancels it

Weakened by affliction, combustion or the 9th lord's association with dusthana lords.

Background

Lakshmi is the goddess of prosperity, beauty and good fortune, consort of Vishnu. The yoga's logic follows the Parashari principle that the 9th house is the most fortunate of the trines, and an angle the most visible place for a planet.

When it gives results

A lordship yoga gives its results in the dashas of the planets that form it in the individual chart — the house lords named in the rule. Their Vimshottari mahadashas range from 6 years (the Sun) to 20 (Venus); a yoga whose planets' dashas fall in childhood or very late in life is felt less than one whose dashas run in the active years. Transits of Jupiter and Saturn over the planets or houses involved often mark the moments when it becomes visible.

Checking it in a chart

To judge this yoga in a real chart, Sunyra checks, in order: that the formation rule is met exactly (by sign, using whole-sign houses); the dignity of the planets that form it by sign and in the navamsa; combustion, retrogression and planetary war; aspects from natural benefics and malefics; the houses the planets rule for the ascendant; Shadbala strength; and the running and coming dashas. A yoga that passes these checks is described with confidence; one that does not is described as weak or partial.

How to read it honestly

Like every yoga, this one describes a potential. Whether and when it shows depends on the strength of the planets involved, the houses they rule, aspects from benefics and malefics, the divisional charts, and the dashas of the planets that form it. Classical texts list hundreds of yogas, and most charts contain several; no single yoga decides a life.

These yogas are often read alongside this one:

  • Raja Yoga in Astrology — A raja yoga ('royal combination') forms when the lord of an angle (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and the lord of a trine (1st, 5th, 9th) are related by conjunction, aspect or exchange.
  • Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga — Dharma-karmadhipati yoga forms when the lords of the 9th (dharma) and 10th (karma) houses are related by conjunction, aspect or exchange.
  • Dhana Yoga — Dhana yogas are combinations for wealth.
  • Kahala Yoga — Kahala yoga is traditionally linked with courage, leadership and command.
  • Parivartana Yoga — Parivartana — exchange — yoga forms when two planets sit in each other's signs: for example Mars in Taurus and Venus in Aries.

FAQ

Is Lakshmi yoga about Venus? In some versions; in the BPHS version it is about the 9th lord and the lagna lord.

Is Lakshmi yoga common? The strict BPHS form — 9th lord in own or exaltation sign in an angle — is uncommon.
