In short: Kahala yoga is traditionally linked with courage, leadership and command. It forms when the lords of the 4th and 9th houses are in angles from each other and the lagna lord is strong.
The rule
Kahala yoga forms when the 4th lord and the 9th lord are in mutual kendras (angles from each other) and the lagna lord is strong (Phaladeepika ch. 6).
For each ascendant
The 4th and 9th lords for each ascendant:
| Rising sign | 4th lord | 9th lord |

| Aries | Moon | Jupiter |
| Taurus | Sun | Saturn |
| Gemini | Mercury | Saturn |
| Cancer | Venus | Jupiter |
| Leo | Mars | Mars |
| Virgo | Jupiter | Venus |
| Libra | Saturn | Mercury |
| Scorpio | Saturn | Moon |
| Sagittarius | Jupiter | Sun |
| Capricorn | Mars | Mercury |
| Aquarius | Venus | Venus |
| Pisces | Mercury | Mars |
What it means
Classical texts describe a bold, commanding person who leads others. The 4th (foundation) and 9th (fortune) supporting each other give a stable base for initiative.
Reading it in a chart
Find the lords of the 4th and 9th houses from the table above and check whether they are in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th from each other (or together). Then assess the lagna lord's strength. The yoga describes a stable base (4th) and fortune (9th) supporting each other, with a strong self to use them.
What weakens or cancels it
Weak or afflicted lords, or a weak lagna lord, reduce it.
Background
Kahala belongs to the group of Phaladeepika yogas defined by house lords rather than by particular planets, like the raja and dhana yogas. Its logic links the 4th house — the foundation of home, mind and education — with the 9th house of fortune, and makes the lagna lord's strength the condition for the person to use it. Classical descriptions emphasise boldness and leadership of others, sometimes of a small group or community rather than of a nation.
When it gives results
A lordship yoga gives its results in the dashas of the planets that form it in the individual chart — the house lords named in the rule. Their Vimshottari mahadashas range from 6 years (the Sun) to 20 (Venus); a yoga whose planets' dashas fall in childhood or very late in life is felt less than one whose dashas run in the active years. Transits of Jupiter and Saturn over the planets or houses involved often mark the moments when it becomes visible.
Checking it in a chart
To judge this yoga in a real chart, Sunyra checks, in order: that the formation rule is met exactly (by sign, using whole-sign houses); the dignity of the planets that form it by sign and in the navamsa; combustion, retrogression and planetary war; aspects from natural benefics and malefics; the houses the planets rule for the ascendant; Shadbala strength; and the running and coming dashas. A yoga that passes these checks is described with confidence; one that does not is described as weak or partial.
How to read it honestly
Like every yoga, this one describes a potential. Whether and when it shows depends on the strength of the planets involved, the houses they rule, aspects from benefics and malefics, the divisional charts, and the dashas of the planets that form it. Classical texts list hundreds of yogas, and most charts contain several; no single yoga decides a life.
