How this calculator works

The Lagna (ascendant) changes sign about every two hours and moves a degree in about four minutes, so it needs an accurate birth time and place. It is your 1st house: every other house is counted from it.

We use the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri), so your Vedic Lagna is usually one sign earlier than a Western rising sign.

Calculated in your browser from the same chart as our free Kundli: sidereal zodiac, Lahiri ayanamsa, whole-sign houses, mean node. The numbers match our free Kundli exactly.

Background

The 1st house is the starting point of the chart: the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. Vedic astrology calls it the lagna or tanu bhava, the house of the body; Western astrology calls it the ascendant or rising sign. The First House (Lagna) in Astrology: Self, Body and Beginnings →

Questions

Is the Lagna the same as the rising sign?

Yes: Lagna, ascendant and rising sign are the same point. The Vedic Lagna uses the sidereal zodiac, so it is often one sign behind the Western one.

Why does my Lagna need the birth time?

The rising sign changes about every two hours. Without the time we cannot know it; the calculator will ask you for it.

What is the Lagna lord?

The planet that rules the Lagna’s sign. Where it sits shows where your own energy tends to go; the Lagna lord calculator reads it in detail.
