How this calculator works

Rank the planets by the degrees they have travelled through their signs: the highest is the Atmakaraka, the second the Amatyakaraka. Astrologers read it for career, counsel and the means of livelihood, alongside the 10th house and its lord, which remain the main indicators of profession.

The answer uses the 8-karaka scheme by default, as our free Kundli does; switch to 7 under the answer.

Calculated in your browser from the same chart as our free Kundli: sidereal zodiac, Lahiri ayanamsa, whole-sign houses, mean node. The numbers match our free Kundli exactly.

Background

In the Jaimini system, the planet that has travelled furthest through its sign is the Atmakaraka (the self), and the one with the second-highest degree is the Amatyakaraka (AmK), the "minister" who serves it. Astrologers read the AmK for career, counsel and the means of livelihood: the kind of work through which a person tends to fulfil their purpose. Questions

What is the Amatyakaraka?

In Jaimini astrology it is the planet with the second-highest degree in its sign at birth: the minister who serves the Atmakaraka, read for career and the work through which a person fulfils their purpose.

Is the Amatyakaraka more important than the 10th house?

No. It is read with the 10th house, the 10th lord and the Dashamsa (D10). It adds a second view; it does not replace them.

Why is my Amatyakaraka different on another site?

Usually because of the 7 versus 8 karaka scheme, a different ayanamsa, or a birth time that moves the Moon. We use Lahiri and show both schemes.
