The houses Mars rules for Capricorn rising

Aries and Scorpio fall on the 4th and 11th for this ascendant, so Mars is difficult (rules 11th) by Parashari rules. Read the lordship and the placement together:

• As 4th lord in the 9th: The 4th lord in the 9th is fortunate for home and education: a supportive father and mother, higher learning, and property gained through good fortune.

• As 11th lord in the 9th: The 11th lord in the 9th brings gains through fortune, teachers, father and long journeys.

Some astrologers flag Mars as the badhakesh here, since it rules the 11th of a movable ascendant.

In practice: Mars rules the 4th and 11th for Capricorn rising, giving gains and property, though the 11th lordship adds a mixed note.

Mars and the lagna lord

Mars is neutral of the lagna lord Saturn, and from the 9th it occupies a trine, which makes its help natural. Neutrality leaves the result to dignity and aspects.

Aspects from the 9th house

Mars's glance falls on:

• the 3rd house by its 7th aspect: it pushes courage, skills and siblings into action; that house is Pisces, ruled by Jupiter, so compassion is what it touches.

• the 4th house by its 8th aspect: it energises home, mother and property; that house is Aries, ruled by Mars, so speed is what it touches.

• the 12th house by its 4th aspect: it adds drive, and at times friction, to expenses, foreign lands and retreat; that house is Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter, so optimism is what it touches.

Which nakshatra: Virgo in parts

The degree matters too: Virgo is divided between these nakshatras, whose lords bring their Capricorn-rising houses into play:

• 0°–10° Virgo: Uttara Phalguni, ruled by the Sun, lord of the 8th here, which brings transformation and hidden matters into it; in love it seeks a committed, contractual partnership and keeps its word.

• 10°–23°20′ Virgo: Hasta, under the Moon, which for Capricorn rising rules the 7th, so marriage and partnership enter the reading; in love it shows love through skilful practical help.

• 23°20′–30° Virgo: Chitra, its own nakshatra, making the result purer; for work it points to architecture, design, jewellery, surgery, engineering and fashion.

Love and marriage

In the 9th Mars draws the person to a partner who shares their convictions or sense of adventure; debates on belief should stay respectful. By temperament Mars falls quickly and fights hard for the people it loves; cooling-off time keeps quarrels from escalating. The 7th lord for Capricorn rising is the Moon, and Mars is a natural friend of it, so the two cooperate on relationship matters. For marriage, also read the Moon, lord of the 7th (Cancer) for Capricorn rising, and Venus wherever it sits.

Career and money

Mars in the 9th favours law, sport, adventure, religious or cause-driven work; the person fights for what they believe. Beyond this house, Mars broadly suits engineering, defence, police, surgery, sport, property, manufacturing and entrepreneurial ventures. Earthy Virgo favours steady, practical work. Being lord of the 4th (an angle) placed in the 9th (a trine), Mars links action with merit. Classical raja yoga needs an angle lord and a trine lord to join, aspect each other or exchange signs, so any planet with Mars here is worth checking. Ruling the 11th and sitting in the 9th, it forms a dhana (wealth) link: income tends to follow the person's own merit and good fortune. As for wealth, earning is energetic and impulsive; property and hard assets suit it better than loose cash.

Family and home

On the family side, siblings, property and lively, sometimes heated, household energy feature. Its aspect on the 4th (Aries) reaches home and mother. As 4th lord, though, it carries home and mother into fortune, faith and teachers.

When it gives results: the Mars dasha

The Mars period (7 years in Vimshottari) brings the 4th, 9th and 11th into focus. Expect it to feel testing, with growth through difficulty. Results are said to mature after about age 28.
