In short: Mars in Virgo places the planet of energy in Mercury's earthy sign, Mercury being Mars's enemy. It tends to give precise, careful, technically skilled energy and a critical eye, with irritability when things are wrong. Which life area it colours depends on the ascendant: the table further down shows each one.

Dignity
Mars is in an enemy's sign, ruled by Mercury. By BPHS natural relationships Mars counts Mercury as an enemy, while Mercury counts Mars as neutral — a one-sided relationship. In practice it negotiates with Mercury, whose placement shows where its energy is finally spent.
The Vedic view
Virgo is ruled by Mercury, Mars's enemy in BPHS. Classical descriptions of Mars in Virgo associate it with skill, service and analytical ability, sometimes with a fault-finding temper. Mars spans the later padas of Uttara Phalguni, Hasta and the first half of Chitra (its own nakshatra); in Chitra it is a skilled craftsman.
Character and temperament
The planet brings energy, courage, land, siblings and the drive to act; the sign makes it careful, analytical and service-minded. Being dual, the sign adapts, juggles more than one role and learns on the move.
Strengths: precision, technical skill, diligence and practical courage. At its best this is the nerve to begin what others only talk about.
Challenges: irritability, perfectionism and criticism. Its familiar trap is temper and haste.
Love and marriage
In relationships it is helpful but critical; patience helps. Mars in any sign brings passion and protectiveness, and needs a partner who can take directness; in Virgo that becomes devoted love shown through practical care. Virgo is an earth sign, and in love it shows love through reliability, touch and practical care. Mars's sign is part of the Mangal dosha discussion: the dosha depends on its house, and is always cross-checked from the Moon and Venus and against the partner's chart. The placement speaks most directly about marriage for Pisces rising, where Virgo is the 7th house and Mars rules the 2nd and 9th. Romance is in focus for Taurus rising, where Virgo is the 5th. Its general tone in love: Mars adds passion, protectiveness and impatience: attraction is quick and strong, and anger must not become the language of the relationship.
Career and money
At work it favours surgery, engineering, mechanics, analysis and health sciences. In general Mars suits engineering, defence, surgery, sport, property, police and any work with fire or tools. Virgo, being dual, adapts, juggles more than one role and learns on the move, which shapes the working style. Career is front and centre for Sagittarius rising, where Virgo is the 10th house and Mars sits there with directional strength (dig bala) as lord of the 5th and 12th. By lordship and house it is most helpful to Cancer rising and Sagittarius rising; Capricorn rising and Aquarius rising get its harder side. Financially, money is earned through effort, risk and property, and spent just as quickly. Wealth themes are strongest for Leo rising (the 2nd house) and Scorpio rising (the 11th).
Health and wellbeing
For wellbeing, tradition favours routines that release tension. Traditionally Mars governs blood, muscles, inflammation, injuries and fevers and Virgo governs the intestines and digestion. A helpful habit: hard physical exercise and counting to ten before replying in anger. This is traditional astrology, not medical advice.
The dispositor
Mercury rules Virgo, so Mercury is Mars's dispositor. In Parashari practice the results pass through Mercury: its house shows where they land, its dignity how fully. If Mercury is at the same time in a sign Mars rules (Aries and Scorpio), the two are in parivartana, an exchange of signs, a strong mutual link.
By nakshatra
The degree decides the nakshatra, and each brings its own lord into Mars's story:
0°–10°: Mars in Uttara Phalguni, ruled by the Sun, a friend to Mars; deity Aryaman, god of contracts, friendship and marriage; for work it points to administration, contracts, marriage services, social work and government.
10°–23°20′: Mars in Hasta, ruled by the Moon, a friend to Mars; deity Savitr, the inspiring the Sun; its gift is skilful hands and its shadow cleverness that turns sly.
23°20′–30°: Mars in Chitra, Mars's own nakshatra, so the placement is concentrated; deity Tvashtr, the divine craftsman (later identified with Vishvakarma); for money it earns through craftsmanship and design.

Navamsa and the two zodiacs
If Mars is between 26°40′ and 30° Virgo, it is vargottama (same sign in the navamsa), a classical sign of steadiness. A Western (tropical) chart will often show this Mars in Libra, since the two zodiacs are about 24° apart.
Mars transiting Virgo
Time in the sign: usually six to seven weeks in a sign, and much longer when it turns retrograde. From the Moon, the transit is classed as good for those with the Moon in Cancer, Aries and Scorpio (Phaladeepika ch. 26), subject to vedha and ashtakavarga.
The Western view
In Western astrology Mars in Virgo is peregrine. Modern astrologers describe it as methodical and hard-working.
