A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.

Who Annapurna is, and what the chalisa is

Annapurna (anna, food; purna, full) is Parvati as the Mother who feeds the world. She is the queen of Kashi (Varanasi), where her temple stands beside Kashi Vishwanath, and she is pictured holding a ladle and a bowl of food. A well-loved story tells that Shiva once called the world, food included, an illusion; Parvati withdrew her nourishing power until nothing could grow, and then appeared as Annapurna in Kashi, where Shiva himself came to her with a begging bowl and she fed him. That is why many kitchens keep her picture, and why her blessing is asked before a meal.

A chalisa is a hymn of about forty verses (chalis means forty) in simple old Hindi. The Annapurna Chalisa opens with a doha, has forty chaupais (couplets) and closes with a doha. After praising her as the queen of Kashi, it tells the story of Parvati: Sati giving up her body, her rebirth as the daughter of the Himalaya, Narada testing her resolve, her austerities and Brahma's boon that Shiva would be hers again. It then sees her as Kali and Chandi, as Girija on Kailash and as Lakshmi, and closes with the blessings tradition links with the hymn. No poet is named; it is an old devotional text printed in chalisa collections for generations.

Many families honour Annapurna at Annapurna Jayanti, the full Moon of Margashirsha, and keeping a regular time can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Questions

Who wrote the Annapurna Chalisa?

No poet is named. The opening doha speaks only of “the poet” bowing to Vishweshwar, the Lord of Kashi, which suggests it was composed in or for Kashi. It is an old devotional text, printed without an author in chalisa collections.

Is Annapurna the same as Parvati?

Yes. Annapurna is Parvati in her form as the giver of food. The chalisa itself tells Parvati's story and also sees her as Kali, Chandi and Lakshmi: one Mother in many forms.

Why does a chalisa to Annapurna tell the story of Sati and Parvati?

Because Annapurna is Parvati. Her steady devotion to Shiva, through Sati's death and Parvati's long austerities, is the heart of who she is; the chalisa praises the Mother who feeds the world by telling how she won Shiva.

Where is Annapurna's best-known temple?

In Varanasi (Kashi), a few steps from the Kashi Vishwanath temple. The chalisa calls her Kashi puradhishwari, queen of the city of Kashi.

Text and sources

The text was compared line by line across two independent traditions. Online: Bhakti Bharat (bhaktibharat.com), with Divine Aarti, The Bhajan and InstaAstro, which carry the same text word for word, misprints included, and so count as one witness. In print: the Randhir Prakashan (Haridwar) chalisa collections Aarti Chalisa Sangrah (2000) and 51 Chalisa Sangrah (2004), scanned on archive.org. Both have the same doha, forty chaupais and closing doha. Where they differ we follow the clearer, metrically sound reading.

Variants: ch. 20 saancho (print; online saancha); ch. 27 sanshayo (online; print sanshay); ch. 30 anavadya … anant poorne (online prints the misprint anavagh; print has sadpoorne … apoorne); ch. 31 saagari (online; print sagari); ch. 32 bhaale (online; print baale); ch. 33 hvai Girija (print; online hai); ch. 34 Lakshmi (print Lachhmi); ch. 36 paihahin (print; online paainhahi); ch. 38 paramaishwarya and pati (print pani); closing doha naavainge (print naavahinge). Ch. 6 suteet is in every edition; it is probably a worn form of suteey, “good wives”, and we translate it so. The opening doha's padapadam (lotus feet) is kept as printed. Small spelling differences are not listed. The transliteration and both meanings are our own.
