Shri Lakshmi Chalisa: lyrics with meaning
Forty short verses to Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, grace and well-being. Below is the full text in Hindi, the same in English letters, and a plain meaning for each verse.
Listen: Lakshmi Chalisa
A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.
Fast recitation, full text (3 min)
The complete text recited quickly, as many people chant it every day; nothing is left out.
What the Lakshmi Chalisa is
Lakshmi is the goddess of prosperity, grace and well-being. She is the consort of Vishnu, and the Puranas tell that she rose from the ocean of milk when the gods and asuras churned it, as one of its fourteen treasures, and chose Vishnu as her lord. Wherever Vishnu takes birth, she comes with him: as Sita beside Rama, as Rukmini beside Krishna. She is pictured seated on a lotus, with gold coins flowing from her hand and elephants pouring water over her.
A chalisa is a hymn of about forty verses (chalis means forty) in simple Hindi, made to be sung at home by anyone. The Lakshmi Chalisa opens with a doha and a soratha, then has thirty-nine chaupais (couplets) and ends with two dohas. It praises Lakshmi, retells her birth from the ocean and her service to Vishnu in each of his births, and asks her for knowledge, freedom from trouble and a home where nothing is lacking.
Who wrote it is not known for certain. The last doha carries the name Ramdas, the devotee who offers the prayer, and nothing more about him has come down to us. It is an old devotional text, sung in homes across North India for generations.
Many families recite it on Friday evenings and at Diwali, and keeping a regular day can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.
Shri Lakshmi Chalisa, with meaning
Each verse is given in Hindi, in English letters, and with a short meaning. The opening doha and soratha set the intention, the thirty-nine chaupais are the chalisa proper, and the two dohas close it.

Questions
Who wrote the Lakshmi Chalisa?
The author is not known for certain. The closing doha names Ramdas, the devotee offering the prayer; nothing more about him is recorded. It is an old devotional text, freely sung for generations.
Why do some versions differ slightly?
The chalisa was passed on by singing and in small booklets, so a few words, the order of the last verses and the closing dohas vary between editions. All of them are fine to recite; this page follows the most commonly sung version.
Can I recite it without a puja or without knowing Hindi?
Yes. A lamp and a quiet mind are enough, and you can read it in English letters or along with the audio. Reading the meaning once helps the words come alive.
Will reciting it bring me money?
Tradition says Lakshmi's grace brings prosperity and contentment, and many families find the practice steadying. It is devotion, not a guarantee: tradition itself says Lakshmi stays where there is honest effort, so keep doing your part.
Text and sources
The Hindi text is a traditional, public-domain devotional hymn. Every line was compared across three independent published versions (Bhakti Bharat, Bharat Discovery and Shubh Panchang, with the Prabhat Khabar printing as a fourth check). We follow the most commonly sung version: an opening doha and soratha, thirty-nine chaupais and two closing dohas.
Variants you may meet: some editions add a second opening doha (“सिंधु सुता विष्णुप्रिये…”) and a fortieth chaupai before the end (“रामदास अब कहाई पुकारी…”); some place “केहि प्रकार मैं करौं बड़ाई” before “बिन दर्शन व्याकुल अधिकारी” instead of last; some omit the Ramdas doha. Small word differences include “दो मोही / दे मोही”, “जय सुख / सब सुख”, “तन में / मन में”, “भवानी / महारानी” (chaupai 32), “अछत / अक्षत” and “शत्रु को / शत्रुन का”. Obvious misprints found online (such as “कष्ट नोई” for “कष्ट न होई”) are corrected. The transliterations and meanings are our own.
