Bhagavad Gita Chapter 14 (Gunatraya Vibhaga Yoga) in Hindi and English with meaning

Krishna explains the three gunas, the qualities of nature: sattva (clarity), rajas (restless activity) and tamas (dullness). He shows how each one binds us, how to recognise which is strong at a given moment, and where each leads. Then Arjuna asks how to know someone who has gone beyond all three, and Krishna describes that calm, even person.

What chapter 14 is about

Chapter 13 said that spirit gets bound through attachment to the gunas, the qualities of nature. Chapter 14 explains those gunas. Krishna first gives a picture of creation: great nature is the womb, and he is the father who gives the seed of every living being (14.3–14.4). Nature has three qualities, sattva, rajas and tamas, and all three tie the self to the body (14.5).

Even sattva, the pure and clear quality, binds, through attachment to happiness and knowledge (14.6); rajas binds through craving and busy action, and tamas through carelessness, laziness and sleep (14.7–14.8). The three are always pushing against each other (14.10), and Krishna gives simple signs for which one is strong: clear understanding for sattva, greed and restlessness for rajas, dullness and confusion for tamas (14.11–14.13).

In 14.21 Arjuna asks what a person beyond the gunas is like. The answer (14.22–14.25) is a portrait of steadiness: such a person sees the gunas come and go without resenting or chasing them, and stays the same in pleasure and pain, praise and blame, with friend and foe. The way there, Krishna says, is unwavering devotion (14.26). Reading the chapter with the meanings takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

Meaning: For I am the ground of Brahman, the immortal and unchanging, of eternal dharma, and of perfect, unbroken joy. (Shankara takes “I” here as the inner self, which is itself Brahman; Vaishnava commentators take it as the personal Lord being the support even of Brahman.)

Meaning: Om tat sat. Thus ends the fourteenth chapter, called “the yoga of telling apart the three gunas”, in the Bhagavad Gita, an Upanishad, the knowledge of Brahman and a scripture of yoga, in the dialogue between Shri Krishna and Arjuna.

Questions

What are sattva, rajas and tamas?

They are the three gunas, the basic qualities of nature present in everything, including our own minds. Sattva is clarity, calm and understanding; rajas is desire, drive and restlessness; tamas is dullness, inertia and confusion. All three are always present, and one or another becomes stronger at different times (14.10).

If sattva is good, why does Krishna say it also binds?

Sattva is the best of the three and leads upward (14.18), but in 14.6 Krishna says it binds through attachment to happiness and to knowledge: one can cling even to feeling peaceful or to being learned. The goal of the chapter is to go beyond all three gunas, not only to have more sattva.

What does “gunatita” (beyond the gunas) mean in 14.22–14.25?

It describes a person who still lives in a body and sees the gunas at work, but is no longer pushed around by them: neither resenting nor craving any state of mind, and staying even in pleasure and pain, praise and blame, honour and insult, with friend and foe. In 14.26 Krishna gives unwavering devotion as the way to reach this.

Text and sources

The Sanskrit text is public domain. We checked all 27 verses and the colophon one by one against the chapter on Sanskrit Wikisource (“Bhagavadgita/Gunatrayavibhagayogah”), the Srimad Bhagavad Gita text of IIT Kanpur’s Gita Supersite (heritage.iitk.ac.in), whose text the open “gita/gita” dataset also reproduces (we used only its Sanskrit), and the Bhagavad Gita text on sanskritdocuments.org, comparing them by program after normalising punctuation and spelling conventions. Where they differ we follow the Gita Press reading. The sources agree closely on this chapter: in 14.23 sanskritdocuments.org reads “ity evam”, where the others and Gita Press have “ity eva”, which we keep; and in 14.26 the IIT Kanpur text has a small character-encoding slip in “bhakti”. The transliteration and meanings are our own.
