Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 17
Bhagavad Gita Chapter 17 (Shraddhatraya Vibhaga Yoga) in Hindi and English with meaning
Arjuna asks about people who worship with faith but without following scripture. Krishna answers that faith itself takes three forms, sattvic, rajasic and tamasic, and shows the same three shades in the food we like, the way we worship, the discipline we practise and the way we give. He ends with the meaning of the sacred words “Om tat sat”.

What chapter 17 is about
Chapter 16 ended with Krishna saying that scripture should guide what we do. Arjuna asks a natural question (17.1): what about people who do not follow the rules of scripture but still worship sincerely, with faith? Krishna’s answer is that faith is not one thing. Everyone has faith of some kind, and it takes the colour of their inner nature (17.2). Verse 17.3 puts it simply: a person is made of faith; as one’s faith is, so one is.
Krishna then uses the three gunas (qualities of nature) from chapter 14 as a lens on daily life. Food that is fresh and nourishing is sattvic; food that is too spicy, sour or hot is rajasic; stale and spoiled food is tamasic (17.8–17.10). The same three kinds are traced in worship, in discipline and in giving. Verses 17.14–17.16 are often quoted on their own as the discipline of body, speech and mind; 17.15 describes good speech as true, kind, helpful and not upsetting to others. A gift is sattvic when it is given simply because giving is right, at the right time and place, to someone who will not repay it (17.20).
The last part explains the three words “Om tat sat”, a name of the Absolute (17.23). “Om” begins sacred acts, “tat” (That) is said when acting without seeking a reward, and “sat” means what is real and good (17.24–17.27). This is why every chapter of the Gita closes with “Om tat sat”. The chapter ends by saying that what is done without faith has no lasting worth (17.28). Reading it with the meanings takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
Verses 17.1–17.6: three kinds of faith
Arjuna’s question, faith shaped by one’s nature, and the harsh austerity that harms the body.

Meaning: “Om tat sat”: these three words are held to be the threefold name of Brahman, the Absolute. By it, in the beginning, the brahmins, the Vedas and sacrifices were set in place.
Verse 17.24

Meaning: Steadiness in sacrifice, discipline and giving is also called “Sat”, and so is any action done for their sake. (Many commentators read “for their sake” as “for the sake of the Divine”.)
Verse 17.28
अश्रद्धया हुतं दत्तं तपस्तप्तं कृतं च यत्।
असदित्युच्यते पार्थ न च तत्प्रेत्य नो इह॥

Meaning: Whatever is offered in the fire, given, practised as discipline or done without faith, Arjuna, is called “asat”; it is of no use, neither after death nor here.
Chapter colophon
ॐ तत्सदिति श्रीमद्भगवद्गीतासूपनिषत्सु ब्रह्मविद्यायां योगशास्त्रे

Meaning: Om tat sat. Thus ends the seventeenth chapter, called “the yoga of the three kinds of faith”, in the Bhagavad Gita, an Upanishad, the knowledge of Brahman and a scripture of yoga, in the dialogue between Shri Krishna and Arjuna.
Questions
What does Gita 17.3 mean by “a person is made of faith”?
Krishna says everyone has faith of some kind, shaped by their inner nature, and that what we deeply trust and value shapes who we become: “as one’s faith is, so one is”. The question is not whether we have faith but what kind it is.
What is sattvic food according to Gita 17.8?
Food that increases life, clarity, strength, health, happiness and cheerfulness, and that is juicy, wholesome with natural oils, sustaining and pleasing. The Gita describes food by its qualities and effects, not by a fixed list of dishes; overly spicy, sour or hot food is called rajasic (17.9), and stale or spoiled food tamasic (17.10).
What are the three kinds of tapas (discipline) in Gita 17.14–16?
Discipline of the body: honouring the gods, teachers and the wise, cleanliness, straightforwardness, self-restraint and not harming. Discipline of speech: words that are true, kind, helpful and do not upset others, along with regular study of scripture. Discipline of the mind: a calm, cheerful mind, gentleness, silence, self-control and pure intention.
What does “Om tat sat” mean?
Gita 17.23 calls it the threefold name of Brahman, the Absolute. “Om” is said at the start of sacred acts, “tat” (That) points to acting without seeking a reward, and “sat” means what is real and good. It is why every chapter of the Gita ends with the words “Om tat sat”.
Text and sources
The Sanskrit text is public domain. We checked all 28 verses and the colophon one by one against the chapter on Sanskrit Wikisource (“Bhagavadgita/Shraddhatrayavibhagayogah”) and the Srimad Bhagavad Gita text of IIT Kanpur’s Gita Supersite (heritage.iitk.ac.in), whose text the open “gita/gita” dataset also reproduces (we used only its Sanskrit), comparing them by program after normalising punctuation and spelling conventions. Where they differ we follow the Gita Press reading. Differences: in 17.23 we keep the opening “Om” of “Om tat sat”, which Wikisource and IIT Kanpur have and the dataset drops; in 17.25 the dataset cuts off the last word “moksha-kankshibhih”, which the other two have in full; in 17.2 and 17.7 we keep the standard spelling “shrinu”, and in 17.17 “tat trividham”, where IIT Kanpur and the dataset have small misspellings. We also write “manah-prasadah” (17.16) as one word, as IIT Kanpur and Gita Press do. The transliteration and meanings are our own.
