Bhagavad Gita Chapter 18 (Moksha Sannyasa Yoga) in Hindi and English with meaning

A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.

What chapter 18 is about

Chapter 18 is the Gita’s last chapter and, with 78 verses, its longest. It opens with Arjuna asking about two words he has heard all along: sannyasa (renunciation) and tyaga (letting go) (18.1). Krishna’s answer (18.2) is that sannyasa means giving up actions done out of desire, while tyaga means giving up the fruit of all actions. Since no one with a body can stop acting altogether, the true renunciate is the one who lets go of the fruit, not of the work (18.11). Duties such as worship, giving and self-discipline should still be done, only without attachment (18.6).

Krishna then uses the three gunas, the qualities of nature (sattva: clear and calm, rajas: restless and wanting, tamas: dull and confused), to describe knowledge, action, the doer, understanding, resolve and happiness. The best-known of these is happiness: sattvic joy feels like poison at first and becomes nectar, while pleasure of the senses is nectar at first and poison in the end (18.37–18.38). He teaches that one’s own duty, even done imperfectly, is better than another’s done well (18.47), and that ordinary work, done well, can itself be worship (18.46).

Then comes the end of the teaching. Krishna tells Arjuna to reflect on everything and “do as you choose” (18.63), and then, out of love, gives his most secret word: “Let go of all dharmas and take refuge in me alone; I will free you from all sins; do not grieve” (18.66). Many traditions call this the charama shloka, the final verse of the teaching; commentators read “let go of all dharmas” in different ways, from giving up the sense of being the doer to complete surrender (sharanagati) to God. Arjuna replies that his confusion is gone and he will do as Krishna says (18.73). Sanjaya, who has been narrating to the blind King Dhritarashtra, ends the Gita with 18.78: wherever Krishna, the lord of yoga, and Arjuna, the archer, stand together, there are fortune, victory, wellbeing and sound conduct. Traditionally it is read as a blessing: where wisdom and steady effort meet, good follows.

If you are new, here is the whole Gita in a few lines. In chapter 1 Arjuna, facing his own family in battle, loses heart. In chapters 2 to 6 Krishna teaches that the self never dies, that we should do our duty without clinging to results, and how to steady the mind in meditation. Chapters 7 to 12 speak of God: his presence in everything, the vision of his cosmic form (chapter 11) and the path of loving devotion (chapter 12). Chapters 13 to 17 explain the body and the one who knows it, and the three gunas that shape all of life. Chapter 18 draws these threads together, knowledge, action and devotion, into one simple call: do your work without clinging, and rest in the divine. Reading this chapter with the meanings takes about 40 to 50 minutes.

Verses 18.1–18.12: renunciation and letting go

Meaning: Om tat sat. Thus ends the eighteenth chapter, called “the yoga of freedom through renunciation”, in the Bhagavad Gita, an Upanishad, the knowledge of Brahman and a scripture of yoga, in the dialogue between Shri Krishna and Arjuna.

Questions

What is the difference between sannyasa and tyaga in Gita chapter 18?

In 18.2 Krishna says sannyasa is giving up actions done out of desire, while tyaga is giving up the fruit of every action. He then makes clear that duties should not be dropped (18.5–18.7) and, since no one with a body can stop acting (18.11), the real renunciate is the one who keeps doing their work and lets go of the fruit.

What does Bhagavad Gita 18.66 (sarva-dharman parityajya) mean?

Krishna says: let go of all dharmas and take refuge in me alone; I will free you from all sins; do not grieve. It is often called the final word of the Gita. Commentators read “let go of all dharmas” differently: some as dropping the sense of being the doer and every means one leans on, others as complete surrender (sharanagati) to God. All agree it is a promise of care: the one who truly takes refuge need not be afraid.

What is the last verse of the Bhagavad Gita?

The last verse is 18.78, spoken by Sanjaya: wherever Krishna, the lord of yoga, and Arjuna, the archer, are together, there are fortune, victory, wellbeing and firm right conduct. Many people recite it at the end of a Gita reading as a blessing, taking Krishna as wisdom and Arjuna as sincere effort.

What are sattvic, rajasic and tamasic happiness in Gita 18.37–18.39?

Sattvic happiness feels hard at first, like poison, but becomes like nectar, and comes from a clear mind. Rajasic happiness comes from the senses: sweet at first and bitter in the end. Tamasic happiness comes from sleep, laziness and carelessness and dulls the mind from start to finish.

We checked all 78 verses and the colophon one by one against the chapter on Sanskrit Wikisource (“Bhagavadgita/Mokshasannyasayogah”) and the Srimad Bhagavad Gita text of IIT Kanpur’s Gita Supersite (heritage.iitk.ac.in), whose text the open “gita/gita” dataset also reproduces (we used only its Sanskrit), comparing them by program after normalising punctuation and spelling conventions. Where they differ we follow the Gita Press reading. Differences: in 18.25 we read “anavekshya” (without regard for) with Wikisource and Gita Press, where IIT Kanpur and the dataset have “anapekshya”; in 18.51 we read “vishuddhaya” with IIT Kanpur and Gita Press, where Wikisource has a slip; in 18.66 we print “aham tva” as in Gita Press and IIT Kanpur, while Wikisource and many reciters say “aham tvam”, which has the same meaning; we spell “shrinu” as “शृणु” (18.4, 18.29, 18.36, 18.64, 18.71) with Wikisource, and tidy a few typing slips in the IIT Kanpur text (18.6, 18.40, 18.68, 18.69). The transliteration and meanings are our own.
